"After the acclaimed first recording of "Vento" by the trio Jose Lencastre, Hernani Faustino and Vasco Furtado, now comes a new chapter with Forces in Motion. Performed absent of an audience in an empty church and broadcasted live for a radio program by Osso Colectivo, the music carries a strong sense for searching and risk. Faustino this time takes up the electric bass, Lencastre's alto saxophone is breathtaking and melodic, and Furtado's drums are always a surprise with organic and fundamental details. The sound reveals a new dimension. Intriguing music, focused, quiet, strong and with beautiful colours."-Phonogram Unit
"The trio is Lencastre on alto saxophone, Hernâni Faustino on electric bass (to date, I have known Faustino as an double bassist with acoustic groups like the RED Trio), and drummer Vasco Furtado. The first album, Vento, was reviewed by Stuart Broomer here and he points out the 'expressionist potential' of the group. This spirit continues to thrive on Forces in Motion, and perhaps is even intensified through Faustino's approach to the electric bass, in which the round tones of the double bass are replaced with dry, staccato notes, articulated in the mix and making the ground feel more ephemeral.
The album opens quietly, with a splash of cymbals and then through an extended welling of sound. The six minutes of 'Dust' rises and falls without ever kicking up too much of a cloud, though it never settles either. It leads to the 13 minute 'Point of departure,' which is a showcase of jittery bass work and complimentary drumming. Lencastre probes the craggy contours and in turn weaves an expressive melody. The tempo picks up as the track progresses, Faustino plays a counter melody, while Furtado responds with cracking stick-work. Lencastre is quick, he bobs and weaves throughout the buzzing rhythm work. The pieces reaches a breaking point and the three retreat. The third track, 'Cascade' picks up with the exploratory sound of Faustino's bass, augmented by electronics. The drums and sax soon come in, Lencastre plays a searching melody and Furtado leans into the tom-toms. The three explore a deliberate theme that eventually builds to an intense apex. Lencastre, even when getting into the altissimo register, doesn't force his instrument, rather his sound is propelled by the centrifugal forces of the rhythm. This both holds true too on the next long piece "Lava Flow" that begins exploratory and builds to a peak with red hot melodic rivulets streaming down its sides.
The work of the trio on Forces in Motion is highly enjoyable. Accessible and energetic, at times exploratory and others awash in pulse and melody."-Paul Acquaro, The Free Jazz Collective

Two decades later of multiple interactions with Portuguese and international musicians, he's now considered one of the most intense and solid bassists in the Portuguese scene. The association he maintains with drummer Gabriel Ferrandini (RED trio, Nobuyasu Furuya Trio & Quintet, Rodrigo Amado Wire Quartet) has been pointed as a dynamic and powerful rhythm section. His visceral playing is well showed by the contortions of his face during a performance: he goes to the limits of pleasure and pain. Music is his life: besides being a musician, he was one of the members of the label Clean Feed, considered one of the five more important on the planet in what regards jazz, and the Trem Azul Jazz Store, located in Lisbon. He also composed for theatre, produced radio programs, and wrote about music in a couple of magazines. A good part of his activity in photography is also music oriented: Faustino is one of the most accomplished stage photographers around. This says all about his passion and commitment. Hernani Faustino's numerous meetings and collaborations with other improvisors is astonishing: John Butcher, Lotte Anker, Nate Wooley, Carlos "Zíngaro", Agustí Fernández, Sei Miguel, Rafael Toral, Jason Stein, Nuno Rebelo, Rodrigo Pinheiro, Gabriel Ferrandini, Pedro Sousa, Rodrigo Amado, Albert Cirera, Manuel Mota, Luís Lopes, Jon Irabagon, Taylor Ho Bynum, Gerard Lebik, Piotr Damasiewicz, Harris Eisenstadt, Neil Davidson, Heddy Boubaker, Gerard Lebik, Elliott Levin, Katsura Yamauchi, Mats Gustafsson, Chris Corsano, Nikolaus Gerszewski, Rob Mazurek, Reinhold Friedl, Ernesto Rodrigues, José Oliveira, Helena Espvall, Nuno Torres, Ricardo Jacinto, Blaise Siwula, Virginia Genta, Elliott Levin, Daniel Carter, Federico Ughi, Floros Floridis, Matt Bauder, Dennis González, Vítor Rua, and many more, covering a wide range from free bop to extreme experimentation, going through electroacoustic improv, reductionism and noise." ^ Hide Bio for Hernani Faustino • Show Bio for Vasco Furtado Vasco Furtado: "Born in Lisbon in 1981.
