Barba, Rosa / Chad Taylor: In a Perpetual Now of Instantaneous Visibility (Corbett vs. Dempsey)

Using Rosa Barba's cello and the celluloid of a film projector as an alternative bow to create rich drones, and Chad Taylor's drum kit along with his incredible prowess with a mbira, this NY duo create an incredible set of rhythmically active soundscapes that draws their listener into a wonderfully vivid and richly flowing improvisational world; stunning!

"Rosa Barba's work is a subtle interrogation and co-option of industrial cinema-as-subject via various kinds of what might be understood as "stagings"-of "the local," the nonactor, gesture, genre, information, expertise and authority, the mundane-or removals from a social realism within which they were observed and which qualifies them as components of the work, to be framed, redesigned, represented. The effect of this contests and recasts truth and fiction, myth and reality, metaphor and material, to a disorienting degree that ultimately extends into a conceptual practice that also recasts the viewer's own staging as an act of radical and exhilarating reversal-from being the receiver of an image (a subject of control) to being in and among its engine room(s), looking out."-Ian White, 2011

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Artist and musician Rosa Barba paired up with drummer Chad Taylor for their first duo record, In a Perpetual Now of Instantaneous Visibility. Documenting a September 2019 performance and installation at New York's Park Avenue Armory, part of an invitation by pianist Jason Moran, the CD's two mesmerizing tracks clock in at over 30-minutes each.

Patiently built as collaborative soundscapes, they feature Barba's unorthodox conjoining of cello and film projector in which she uses the celluloid as an alternative bow, and the masterful trap-set and thumb-piano of Taylor. A low drone gently ebbs and flows, Taylor's malleted tom-toms and cymbals cresting along with the shifting dynamics of the intoned strings, sometimes polymetrical patterns emerging in pools of spectacularly soulful drumming, then receding to reveal the hums and moans of Barba's mysterious mantra."-Corbett vs. Dempsey
