Chabala, Barry / Ann Coman: In And Out Of Focus (Roeba)

This album of improvised music was born out of mutual appreciation and admiration for the respective art forms of Ann Coman and experimental sound artist Barry Chabala, who performed original guitar improvisations while Coman intuitively created visual artworks from those performances, then reversing the process where Chabala interpreted Coman's art as visual scores.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"My extensive studies in Eastern philosophy both as a healing artist and fine artist, allow me to view all things through the lens of yin and yang. This collaboration of art and sound was no exception. Together two equal but opposite halves make a whole, where one can not exist without the other. With this ancient principle in mind, the project became an exploration of what happens when art and music collide.

Push/Pull Light/Dark Warm /Cold High/Low Hard /Soft Happy/Sad In /Out

Conceptually In and Out of Focus was born in that moment. The artwork collection and album were generated through a pandemic! The most challenging time we have seen globally in over century and therefore I drew upon the I Ching (Book Of Changes) for further inspiration. "The situation is incomplete, but the chaos of the past is giving way to order - the goal is in sight." This translation of Hexagram 64 rang true throughout the pandemic, this project and life in general. I used my intuitive artistic skills to drop down into a meditative state and let it flow, listening to Barry play...and play...and play. His work is soulful, creative, serendipitous and at times quite serene with bumps of energy sprinkled throughout. So what we have now is a result of that. It truly is the exploration of the depth of one's soul illustrated to beautiful music. How vast and expansive it can be no matter the circumstances. Never asking 'how are you today' but always asking 'who are you today.' This was truly an extraordinary experience."-Ann Coman, Artist

Artist Biographies

"About Ann Coman

My first love was fine arts; I trained and worked professionally in oil painting, watercolors, interior design, jewelry design, stained glass windows, architectural product development, and much more. In the midst of a flourishing design career, I was Divinely guided to serve others in the healing arts. I enrolled in the world renowned Swedish Institute for Massage and Health Sciences in NYC. There I gained my understanding of how science, medicine, and nature work together for optimal wellness. With a sense of great honor, the human body and its auric fields became my new canvas.

Through the lens of Eastern philosophy, studying the natural world for healing became particularly fascinating. Metaphysics, medicine, movement, nutrition, cosmology, spirituality, time and space - all can be understood if you embrace the intricate forces of balance in the phenomena known as Yin and Yang.

Throughout ancient history countless civilizations, religions, and cultures have turned to the earth's elements to interpret the complex relationship between the physiology and pathology of the human body and the natural environment.

When we look deeply into nature's labyrinths, we find that five elements provide the foundation for the entire physical world. Chinese and Taoist medicine recognize them as Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. Ayurveda recognizes them as Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. Similarly, Shamans and Spirit-workers throughout time have mastered the natural elements in order to journey deeper through doorways into mystical healing realms.

I like to dance and play with all of these principles, whether it's through creating original works of art or assisting in the transformation of energy. Experimenting with and integrating into these magnificent languages of the natural world enables pure love for self and others to bloom, facilitating a return to Spirit, restoring a sense of balance and equilibrium through the Whole Self. Barry has presented lectures on graphic scores & improvisation for Bowerbird of Philadelphia, performed numerous compositions from the Wandelweiser collective throughout the United States, and has recorded for labels including Confront, Gravity Wave, Another Timbre, Erstwhile and his own imprint Roeba Records."
