The long-running trio of saxophonist Kidd Jordan, pianist Joel Futterman and drummer Alvin Fielder, established in 1994 and together until Fielder's passing in 2018, are heard in this incredible 1997 studio recording from New Orleans. The 7 collective improvisations on this album start start with an "Opening" and then build in intensity and excitement with a strong spiritual connection between the trio's members. This is exemplary free jazz, the members of this bass-less trio urging each other on in long runs that diverge and converge with enthusiasm, pausing for pensive moments, and then propelled again with astonishing technical skill and creative drive. Futterman also performs on a curved soprano Indian flute, in dialog with Jordan as Fielder punctuates their distinctive languages. The album is a revelation of this trio's skill early in their trajectory. Ass listeners we are fortunate that this recording has been released after being spirited away for so many years. Profound.
