A Norwegian quintet led by Håvard Wiik, bringing together Eivind Lønning, Espen Reinertsen, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, and Hans Hulbækmo in a dynamic set that balances composed structures with free improv, blending post-bop lyricism, intricate ensemble interplay, and spacious, timbre-focused passages into a fluid and contemporary jazz expression.

"Cimota seeks a unique sound as an ensemble, where the focus is equally based on collective musicianship as on solo-driven performances. The music draws inspiration from the entire history of jazz, European and American free improvisation and new composed music from all corners of the world. All this is framed by compositions with occasionally complex forms, intricate themes, grooves and swing, but also not afraid to explore the quiet, with long sound-based parts. It all flows easily and frictionless from start to finish. This is jazz for our time, challenging and accessible, melodic and abstract, music that refuses to be ignored and demands that the listener give it their full attention."-Sonic Transmissions
"I know I wasn't alone in lamenting the dissolution of the remarkable Scandinavian quintet Atomic a few years ago. The Swedish-Norwegian combo was not only one of the finest jazz bands of the 21st century, but it also helped to facilitate international interest in a new breed of players from the region-double bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, trumpeter Magnus Broo, reedist Fredrik Ljungkvist, and pianist Håvard Wiik. As the group evolved, the writing of Ljungvkist and Wiik grew more adventurous and introspective, particularly as the latter's interest in contemporary classical music expanded. The quintet's farewell tour ended in 2022, lengthened a bit due to pandemic restrictions, which included some ridiculous Covid-related action. Its final Berlin shows at KM28 turned into a superspread event, where nearly everyone in the band and audience, myself included, contracted the virus, leading to the pithy term for the engagement, Atomicron, as the omicron variant was just beginning to wreak havoc in Europe. Since then its members, including drummer Hans Hulbækmo, who replaced Nilssen-Love in 2014, have been relatively active in other projects, but pianist Wiik seemed less busy, so I'm happy to discuss his welcome return.
In February a new Wiik-led project called Cimota-read it backwards and you see there's some continuity in mind-released its superb debut album [ˈkɪmɔtɑː] (Sonic Transmissions). The quintet reunited Wiik with Haker Flaten and Hulbækmo, with the Swedish horn players replaced by two superb Norwegians: trumpeter Eivind Lønning and saxophonist Espen Reinsertsen, who've worked together closely for many years as the stellar, shape-shifting improvising duo Streifenjunko. Given the band moniker we shouldn't be surprised that the quintet definitely retains a lot of Atomic's qualities, a post-bop soundworld spiked by plenty of contemplative space, refined interaction-particularly from the horn players, who've long possessed an almost telepathic improvisational bond-and ruminative melodies. The album opens with "Spirit of '76 (Scherzo)," as the bassist and drummer sculpt a wonderfully knotty groove to clear space for Wiik's introductory improvisation, with gritty left-handed figures that hint at early Cecil Taylor kissed by a bit of Bach. The horns add some spare contrapuntal lines behind the pianist, and the full theme blossoms two-and-a-half minutes in, opening up a plangent passage in which no one takes a solo. Instead there's wonderfully chattery, tension-building interplay within a single chord, the rhythm section almost going silent for the pianist and horn players to form an irregular but tightly woven fabric of splattery, fractured improvisation. That sort of formal experimentation is a prevalent concern for Wiik, who designs his pieces with carefully orchestrated improvisation in mind. His ensemble writing is no less gripping and intricate than the most feverish solos.
I'm particularly fond of the aptly titled "Blues for the End of the World," a delightfully wobbly mid-tempo swinger that teeters to and from, on the edge of the abyss in the opening passage, before flipping into a series of alternating contemplative, attractively jagged sections. Finally, after more than three minutes the tune opens up with a brash, plunger mute solo from Lønning, a vocalic expression that encourages a kind of reactive scrabbling from his bandmates. "August 23rd, 2023 (Acoustic Version)" is an achingly spare ballad of stunning composure, a poised lament dripping with melancholy. Again, no solos, but plenty of subtle timbral and melodic warping. In the end the pin-drop dynamics and meticulously pitched attack are their own reward. The quintet has played a number of shows in Norway, but here's hoping that Cimota takes it on the road, or at least brings it to Wiik's adopted home in Berlin, before too long. It should definitely satisfy listeners missing Atomic, while the presence of Reinertsen and Lønning opens up new vistas.

Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Eivind Lonning "Eivind Lønning, born 1983, living in Oslo, is one of the most prominent and active young musicians on the Norwegian creative music scene, playing in bands like Streifenjunko, Christian Wallumrød Ensemble, Motif, Koboku Senju, and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Eivind grew up playing classical trumpet, his education contains a jazz bachelor from the Trondheim Conservatory and a master degree in improvised music from the Academy of Music in Oslo. He is experienced in both jazz and classical music, and has developed a very personal sound with unusual melodic qualities. In the duo Streifenjunko with sax player Espen Reinertsen, Eivind Lønning has worked with modern improvisation and extended playing techniques for the trumpet. They have worked closely together for many years to present a truly unique repertoire, a mix between composed structures and improvisations, and have collaborated with Keith Rowe, Tetuzi Akiyama, Toshimaru Nakamura, Jim Denley, Christian Wallumrød, Sidsel Endresen and video artist Kjell Bjørgeengen. During the last few years, Streifenjunko have played more than 100 concerts all over the world, including Japan, USA, South-Africa, Australia and most of Europe. Festival performances includes Fri Resonans and Kongsberg Jazzfestival in Norway, On the Edge of Wrong Festival in South Africa, Moers Festival in Germany, Sonic Acts in Amsterdam, Cable Festival in Nantes, and the NOWnow Festival in Sydney. Streifenjunko released their debut cd "No Longer Burning" in 2009 on the record label Sofa. In 2010 the duo recieved the prestigious Young Lindeman Award. In 2012 they released their second album, "Sval Torv", on Sofa. In 2011 Eivind also started playing solo performances, he has done tours in Scandinavia and performed at the opening concert of the Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival in 2011. In 2008 Eivind replaced Arve Henriksen in the Christian Wallumrød Ensemble, and in 2009 he featured on the ECM release "Fabula Suite Lugano" which received remarkable critical acclaims, and was nominated for "The Nordic Council Music Prize 2010". As part of Trondheim Jazz Orchestra he has performed with Joshua Redman, Dave Holland and Chick Corea, and performed comissions by Eirik Hegdal, Per Zanussi, Kim Myhr, Ståle Storløkken, Motorpsycho and Erlend Skomsvoll." ^ Hide Bio for Eivind Lonning • Show Bio for Espen Reinertsen "Espen Reinertsen (born 1979) based in Oslo, is educated at NTNU's Jazzconservatory in Trondhem and Norwegian Music Academy in Oslo. He plays with trumpetplayer Eivind Lønning in the duo Streifenjunko, and is also currently a member of Christian Wallumrød Ensemble, and Koboku Senju together with Eivind Lønning and tubaist Martin Taxt, with the japanese improvisers Tetuzi Akiyama and Toshimaru Nakamura. Reinertsen has at several occasions collaborated with musicians as Sidsel Endresen, Michel Doneda, Keith Rowe and videoartist Kjell Bjørgengen." ^ Hide Bio for Espen Reinertsen • Show Bio for Havard Wiik "Håvard Skarpnes Wiik (born March 10, 1975) in Kristiansund, Norway is a Norwegian jazz pianist and composer, known from a number of recordings with bands like Atomic, and performances with musicians like Petter Wettre, Ola Kvernberg and Stian Carstensen. Wiik caused sensation at 17 years old in a concert at the Moldejazz, with bassist Steinar Raknes, as the "Wiikrak Duo". He attended the jazz program at Trondheim musikkonservatorium from 1994 to 96, where he and fellow students established the jazz band Element. After moving to Oslo he has been a key player in many band projects, such as Atomic, "Free Fall", "Atomic Schooldays", a duo with Håkon Kornstad, a new project with Axel Dörner and Fredrik Ljungkvist. He has been an obvious choice as collaborator with giants in jazz, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano representing the old school, and Ken Vandermark being a soul mate from the here and now., for example the band Motif. He also led the Håvard Wiik Trio with Mats Eilertsen (bass) and Per Oddvar Johansen (drums), to release Postures (Jazzland, 2003). Wiik was recogniced as "Artist in residence" at the Moldejazz (2004). At the Kongsberg Jazz Festival (2006), he was awarded the Vital prize, giving him the opportunity to perform as solo artist, and release the album Palinode (2007). He also started his own H.W. Trio, releasing Postures (2003), performing his own compositions. He transformed the trio to The Arcades Project (2007). In this version of the trio we find Håkon Mjåset Johansen on drums and Ole Morten Vågan on bass. They have also been involved within bands such as Urban Connection, Come Shine, Bugge Wesseltoft's New Conception of Jazz." ^ Hide Bio for Havard Wiik • Show Bio for Ingebrigt Haker Flaten "Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (b. 1971, Oppdal) - studied Jazz at the Music Consevatory in Trondheim, Norway (1992-1995) under the tutelage of bassplayer Odd Magne Gridseth. When one listens to the great bassists in modern jazz history, a striking thing (though it may not be immediately arrived at) is that greatness is reached through open-mindedness and diversity. William Parker, Malachi Favors Maghostut, Peter Kowald, Wilbur Ware, Bertram Turetsky, Buell Neidlinger - all of these bass players have embraced a lifestyle of playing all sorts of music and the breadth of each musicians' technique is a testament to those experiences. Norwegian bassist and composer Ingebrigt Håker Flaten is also a musician whose experience is both geographical and aesthetic. While the fertile Scandinavian new jazz scene offered a vast amount of opportunities to work in different bands with musicians whose concepts are as individual as the grains in a reed, Flaten has found home and on-the-bandstand education in places as far flung as Chicago and his current residence Austin, Texas. A muscular player whose tone and attack run the gamut from Paul Chambers to Buschi Niebergall, his sense of both openness and control serves ensembles as diverse as The Thing, Free Fall, Atomic, Scorch Trio and the Kornstad/Håker Flaten Duo. In addition to his own Chicago Sextet and Austin-centric Young Mothers, Flaten has also recorded and performed with Frode Gjerstad, Dave Rempis, Bobby Bradford, the AALY Trio, Ken Vandermark, Stephen Gauci, Tony Malaby, Daniel Levin, Dennis Gonzalez and numerous others. Flaten studied at the Conservatory in Trondheim (1992-1995), turning professional shortly afterward, yet his hunger to play in new situations with new musicians - schooled or amateur, frequently recorded or just starting out - puts him in a rare class, that of a truly broad-minded artist. That mettle has served him well, living and developing the music under his own steam and drawing from influences as diverse as Derek Bailey, George Russell, Chris McGregor, filmmakers Ingmar Bergman, contemporary pop melody and gritty punk music as well as everyday sights and sounds. There is a calmness and self-assuredness that imbues all great artists, in that the diversity of their work comes with very little ego. Flaten's artistry is often in collective, leaderless ensembles and in fact, following a decade of professional musicianship it wasn't until 2004 that his leader-debut was released - Quintet (Jazzland, followed in 2008 by The Year of the Boar, and a Sextet recording is upcoming). This latter fact is partly due to the necessity of a copacetic situation - in an interview in 2010 with the Austinist he noted that "I use people where I'm located. It's inspiring to have your own band to write for, but you have to make sure that people feel free and not limited by the music; the compositions should lead the way to a player's open mind, and that is a challenge." Certainly not every bandleader/composer thinks this way. In 2011, he formed another ensemble, The Young Mothers, which includes drummers Stefan Gonzalez (Dallas) and Frank Rosaly (Chicago), trumpeter/poet/rapper Jawaad Taylor (New York), saxophonist Jason Jackson (Houston), and Jonathan Horne (Austin) on guitar. It's a group of varying levels and influences and as it grows organically, will be another excellent lens through which to view Flaten's aesthetic, philosophy, and musicianship. The next few years see him in a position where established ensembles can steep and spread their influence, while experimenting with and nurturing a wide range of new relationships." ^ Hide Bio for Ingebrigt Haker Flaten • Show Bio for Hans Hulbaekmo Hans Hulbækmo is a highly versatile and acclaimed Norwegian drummer whose driving, creative, and often mischievous playing has made him a distinctive voice within the Scandinavian free jazz and improvisation scenes. Known for blending formidable technical skill with Dadaist impulses and spontaneous compositional thinking, Hulbækmo brings an exploratory spirit to rhythm that is both rigorous and playfully unpredictable. Raised in a musical environment that fostered curiosity and experimentation, Hulbækmo developed a musical maturity early on, combining an open, intuitive sensibility with a deep commitment to sonic exploration. His drumming is frequently described as sensual, hypnotic, and technically assured, marked by unorthodox grooves and a highly responsive interplay with fellow musicians. Whether using sticks, mallets, or brushes, he shapes rhythm as a fluid, interactive force rather than a fixed foundation. Hulbækmo has contributed significantly to a wide range of influential ensembles. In 2014, he joined the renowned Scandinavian freebop quintet Atomic, succeeding Paal Nilssen-Love and injecting fresh energy into the group's evolving sound. With Moskus, he provides a playful yet texturally rich rhythmic framework that supports the trio's eclectic approach to jazz. His collaborations extend further through projects such as Skadedyr, Flukten, and the Hanna Paulsberg Concept, each highlighting different facets of his musical personality. A particularly notable partnership is his duo work with bassist and electronic musician Egil Kalman, where Hulbækmo explores distinctive rhythmic landscapes that merge traditional percussion with modular synthesis. These performances often draw on folk-influenced motifs and minimalist structures, emphasizing texture and space as much as pulse. In 2023, Hulbækmo released his solo debut Tilfeldig Næpe, a recording that encapsulates his expansive approach to percussion. Employing an "expanded drum kit," he incorporates a wide array of percussive objects, mouth harps, and everyday materials, creating a richly varied palette of sounds that reflect his fascination with timbre and unconventional instrumentation. Across his work, Hans Hulbækmo continues to redefine the role of the drummer in contemporary improvisation, balancing structure and spontaneity with a sense of humor and invention that keeps his music continually engaging and unpredictable. ^ Hide Bio for Hans Hulbaekmo
