An intimate, immersive duo recording in which Tom Jackson's finely articulated clarinet and Daniel Thompson's responsive, highly attuned guitar create a richly expressive terrain of spontaneous sound, channeling the spirit of free improvisation's pioneers in a deeply communicative exchange of timbre, space, and dynamic nuance.

Recorded at Dark Kitchen Studios, in London, UK, on April 15t, 2023, by Daniel Lovegrove.
Dedicated to Derek Bailey and Tony Coe
Dark Kitchen captures a deep dialogue between two seasoned London-based improvisers — clarinetist Tom Jackson and guitarist Daniel Thompson — as they probe the resonant edges of spontaneous creation. Both musicians are steeped in the UK's vigorous free improvisation and contemporary music scenes: Jackson is equally comfortable within chamber, contemporary, and freely improvised contexts, having performed widely across Europe, Australia and Asia and worked with ensembles such as Apartment House and Lontano, while also completing a PhD investigating the clarinet through free improvisation.
Thompson, a longstanding figure in London's improvised music world, has developed a lyrical yet unpredictable guitar language shaped by deep engagement with peers including Evan Parker, John Edwards, Caroline Kraabel, and many others, and by his work as founder of empty birdcage records documenting exploratory music.
Dedicated to Derek Bailey and Tony Coe, Dark Kitchen channels the spirit of Bailey's revolutionary free improvisation — a music that dissolves formal constraints and foregrounds moment-to-moment interaction — alongside echoes of Coe's expansive, genre-crossing artistry. Bailey's influence in particular — from his early Incus recordings that redefined guitar language to his decades-long insistence on unbounded sound — provides an implicit touchstone for the disc's open architecture of sound and gesture.
Recorded at Dark Kitchen Studios in London in April 2023 and comprising a suite of unhurried yet deeply communicative improvisations, the album unfolds with a balance of concentrated focus and spontaneous energy, where Jackson's textural clarinet vocality meets Thompson's agile, probing guitar responses. The result is a compelling exploration of timbral nuance, silence and incandescence that rewards repeated listening and invites reflection on the lineage of British free improvisation.

Largely self-taught, after moving to London in 2005 Daniel embarked upon a life changing period. He studied with the guitarist John Russell for two years, spent many evenings listening to the trio of John Edwards, Tony Marsh and Evan Parker at The Vortex in East London and absorbed the free improvisation scene in and around London. Collectively this confirmed his musical direction. As well as performing at many venues and festivals across the UK and Europe Daniel has also been organising concerts since 2007. With Benedict Taylor he organised the Shoreditch Church Series in London during the years 2010 to 2013. From 2013 to 2016 Daniel organised the monthly Foley Street improvised music concert series in London's West End. Daniel is the founder and artistic director of 'empty birdcage records', a label dedicated to releasing documents of free improvisation. You will hear and see Daniel performing solo, with other musicians in many ad-hoc improvising situations and in long-term collaborations or "working groups'. Recent collaborations will have heard and seen Daniel performing and or recording with Neil Metcalfe, Steve Noble, Caroline Kraabel, Max Reed, John Edwards, Benedict Taylor, Tom Jackson, Vid Drasler, Evan Parker, Adam Bohman, Sue Lynch, Alex Ward, Kay Grant, Roland Ramanan, Adrian Northover, Marcello Magliocchi, Alan Wilkinson, Colin Webster amongst others. Daniel's music can be heard on recorded documents." ^ Hide Bio for Daniel Thompson
