In a live Cologne performance the trio of Butcher (reeds), Wassermann (voice & bird-calls) and Blume (drums/percussion) transform ambient impulse and acoustic detail into a series of "close-call" ensemble gestures, where bird-like vocal fragments, saxophone multiphonics and micro-percussion co-here in porous space, yielding an improvised chamber of attentiveness, ecological flux and sonic shadow play.

Recorded live at LOFT, in Cologne, Germany, on Sepetmber 27th, 2024, by Lukas Lohner.
Recorded live at Cologne's LOFT on 27 September 2024, Leaflight: Close Calls captures three improvisers with sharply defined voices-Butcher on tenor and soprano saxophone, Wassermann on voice and bird-calls, and Blume on drums and percussion-bringing field-sound, extended technique and agile dialog to the front of the mix.
The set draws on natural and "close-call" imagery (as hinted by its title) to frame interactions of breath, impulse and situational shift: Wassermann's bird-calls and vocal glissandi meet Butcher's multiphonic reeds and Blume's percussive micro-gestures in a live acoustic space emphasising temporal fragility and attentive listening.
The recording reflects the trio's continuing investigation of how spontaneous ensemble means can evoke external "sonic ecologies" and internal reactive spaces, not by sheer volume or flash, but by subtle shifts in sustain, timbre and ensemble silhouette.

Resonant Spaces is a collection of site-specific performances collected during a tour of unusual locations in Scotland and the Orkney Islands. His first solo album, Thirteen Friendly Numbers, includes compositions for multitracked saxophones, whilst later solo CDs focus on live performance, composition, amplification and saxophone-controlled feedback. HCMF has twice commissioned him to compose for his own large ensembles. Other commissions include for Elision (Australia), the Rova (USA) & Quasar (Canada) Saxophone Quartets, reconstructed Futurist Intonarumori (USA), "Tarab Cuts" (based on pre-WWII Arabic recordings, and shortlisted for the 2014 British Composer's Award) and "Good Liquor .." for the London Sinfonietta. Among her teachers were Henning Christiansen and Allan Kaprow. She continued her studies in fine arts, music and singing at the University of California, San Diego. She was a fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude in 1993-94 and at Civitella Ranieri in Italy in 2015. Ute Wassermann has developed her own unique vocal techniques. She explores them in different forms such as voice performances, compositions, improvisations and installations. The human voice is extended in many different ways in her work and often plays with all kinds of other sound connotations. This also results in an extensive use of bird whistles, different kinds of resonating objects and prepared loudspeakers. She is one of the founding members of the artists collective Les Femmes Savantes Other members of this Composer-Performer-Ensemble are Sabine Ercklentz, Andrea Neumann and Ana Maria Rodriguez. She also performs with Richard Scott and Emilio Gordoa in parak.eets and with her quartet speak easy (with Phil Minton, Thomas Lehn and Martin Blume)She also often plays as an Improvisationsduo with, for example, Aleksander Kolkowski, Rhodrie Davies, Joke Lanz, Birgit Ulher, Els Vandeweyer, Charlotte Hug, Richard Barrett und John Russel. Ute Wassermann also performs compositions by others. She has interpreted works by Chaya Czernowin, Henning Christiansen, Hans Joachim Hespos, Salvatore Sciarrino, Luciano Berio, Simon Steen-Andersen, Matthias Kaul, Cathy van Eck, und Richard Barrett." ^ Hide Bio for Ute Wassermann • Show Bio for Martin Blume "Martin Blume - drums, percussion, composition Born 1956 in Arnsberg/Westfalen.
