Artist Biographies

"Itaru Oki (沖至) was born in Suma-Ku, Kobe, Hyogo, Japan on 10th September 1941. Oki Itaru was raised in a rich musical environment; his father was a player of the Shakuhachi (Japanese vertical flute) and his mother was a master of the Koto (Japanese horizontal harp) of the Ikuta School. He started to play the trumpet in his high school brass band before playing in a Dixieland style band and then in a bop band. In the late 1960's, the trumpeter began playing free jazz. He changed his place of performance from Kansai (a western area of Japan) to Tokyo in 1965. After improving his skill in many groups, he joined an experimental unit "ESSG" of Togashi Masahiko and Sato Masahiko. Oki made his first tour to Europe with the ESSG in 1969. After being back from Europe, he formed the Oki Itaru Trio, which later grew into a quartet. In June 1974, he moved to Paris, France. After living in Lyon for a while, he moved back to Paris in December 1999. Until the present, Oki has continually performed at concerts and festivals in France and various other countries in Europe."

"Nobuyoshi Ino (born March 26, 1950, Gunma) is a Japanese jazz double-bassist.

Ino began playing professionally in the early 1970s, and worked in that decade with Motohiko Hino, Terumasa Hino, Kosuke Mine, Akira Miyazawa, Masahiko Sato, Isao Suzuki, Hidefumi Toki, and Kazumi Watanabe. Early in the 1980s he played with Masayuki Takayanagi and Aki Takase, then formed a duo with Lester Bowie, performing from 1984 to 1988 (including on the 1985 album Duet). He also worked with Alex Schlippenbach and Sunny Murray in a trio setting and toured with Elvin Jones. He founded an ensemble called Four Sounds in 1989 which featured Kosuke Mine, Fumio Itabashi, and Hiroshi Murakami as sidemen. Later in his career he worked with Masahiko Togashi as well as with Aki Takase once more."

"Choi Sun Bae produces a clear and lyrical sound on the trumpet, cornet, and flugelhorn. He strives to contribute to the overall beauty of the ensemble rather than to dominate it by drawing attention to the strength and force of his individual improvisations, and he considers tone to be more important than phrasing in his solos.

Choi Sun Bae is an accomplished mainstream jazz musician as well as a free improviser. He performs regularly in Japan, where he is well known as Korea's representative master trumpeter. He participated in the Olympic International Jazz Festival in 1988 and played with the Incheon Symphony Orchestra.

In 1998 he recorded a freely improvised album, Freedom / Solo Trumpet Improvisations with the help of Suetomi Dakao. This album is an important record of life and art, which is portrayed throughout his work, and it is solid proof that he is a truly contemporary artist.

Since 2002 he constantly works together with Alfred Harth appearing on several Laubhuette Productions up to now.

In the years 2003 - 2006 he also contributed sound sources to Alfred Harth's Mother-Of-Pearl-CD-Series"
