Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"I have dedicated most part of my life to the study of erudite music and jazz. As an artist I always felt like a learner, an eternal apprentice. In order to evolve I must break those rules and get free of the shapes, unbound myself from the commonplaces and the tight structures of jazz idioms. Therefore I keep on studying to reach total freedom." These are the words of Carlos Barretto, who is the leading figure in Portuguese jazz today.

"Suite da Terra" ( BAB, 1998 ) was the esthetic turning point for this musician who is not only the most important representative of portuguese jazz but also a reference of modern european jazz. With him, on this trip, are two other major names in portuguese jazz; guitar player Mario Delgado and drummer / percussionist Jose Salgueiro. Guesting as soloists were Louis Sclavis, previously ("Radio Song"), and now Francois Corneloup.

His passion for low pitched instruments like bass clarinet, baritone saxophone or tuba, and the search for modernity within a markedly european perspective, have atracted towards his music these mostly interesting french musicians.

Corneloup is a saxophone player with a vocabulary charged with urgency, with an exploding sound. His fusion with the trio allowed him greater freedom and improvising intensity than in previous collaborations and contributed for a landmark recording in both the trio and Corneloups discography.

The growing internationalization of Carlos Barretto activity has taken his music to many diverse destinations like Grece, United Kingdom, China, Belgium, Italy, Finland and Cape Vert, among others.

Internationally, Carlos Barretto worked with many artists, namely: Horace Parlan, George Cables, Kirk Lightsey, Alain Jean Marie, Mal Waldron, Brad Mehldau, Lee Konitz, Barry Altschul, George Brown, Cindy Blackman, Joe Chambers, Jordy Rossy, Aldo Romano, Don Moye, Richard Galliano, Tony Scott, Glenn Ferris, Steve Grossman, Karl Berger, John Stubblefield, Steve Potts, Steve Lacy, Gary Bartz, Art Farmer, Jack Walrath, Marlon Jordan, John Betsch and Gerard Presencer."-Clean Feed

"Mário Manuel Barrela da Silva Delgado ( Águeda , October 21, 1962 ) is a Portuguese guitarist from the areas of jazz, fusion, jazz rock and experimental music, with several participations in projects of other musical areas. Mário Delgado is one of the most active guitar players in the Portuguese musical scene, either because of his own personality or because his technique and musical ability, coupled with a very personal and innovative expression and language, make him a very sought-after musician for the most various stylistic areas.

Mário Delgado was born in 1962 in Águeda . In Lisbon, he began his musical studies at the Escola de Jazz do Hot Clube de Portugal , in the classes of Zé Eduardo and David Gausden , where he participated in several combos and groups formed by students. He also later devoted himself to classical guitar, studying with José Peixoto and Piñero Nagy at the Academy of Music Amateurs of Lisbon . During his initial phase he participated in several groups with David Gausden , Carlos Martins , Maria João , Nana Sousa Dias , and played with several foreign musicians who moved to Portugal, which consolidated their bases in jazz, and defined a very musical personality ideosyncratic and at the same time open and eclectic. Over the years, Mário Delgado has participated in seminars and workshops with Bill Frisel , Atila Zoller , John Abercrombie , Barney Kessel , Kenny Burrel , David Liebman , Gary Burton , Jimmy Giuffre , Steve Lacy , Derek Bailey , Hans Benink , Zé Eduardo , Red Mitchel , Paul Motian , Joe Lovano and Hal Galper .

Mário Delgado has collaborated or collaborates regularly with Portuguese musicians from a variety of fields, from jazz to rock, or from popular music, such as Anamar , José Mário Branco , Mafalda Veiga , Lua Extravagante , among others, and is a musician in Jorge Palma's bands. band of Mario Laginha and Maria João , being still musical director of the singer Janita Salomé .

In 1989 Mário Delgado participated in the Second Jazz Festival in the City (Lisbon), and in 1990 at the Bienal de Marseille for young Mediterranean artists, with the Zê-de-Zastre group. In 1990 he composed and presented a multimedia show, commissioned by Almada City Hall, included in the Youth Week of that Municipality, together with the musician José Peixoto and the photographer José Fabião.

During the 90's he regularly works with his Trio, which is based on the classic and contemporary repertoire of mainstream jazz, but also some material from the avant-garde scene, as well as on its own originals, consolidating its language and musical personality.

He participated in the cycle "Improvised Music on the Terrace of the Fronteira Palace" in 1992, at the "I National Encounter of Guitars" in the same year, in the Galveias Palace, in the cycle "Concerto de Guitras II" in 1993, and finally in "Indetermination in Music from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, "included in the City of Lisbon celebrations in the same year, with a trio created in 1992, with guitarist José Peixoto and percussionist José Salgueiro. This trio recorded the CD "Taifa" in March 1993, in which Arab and Mediterranean sonorities spread so closely linked to the Portuguese musical heritage.

In May 1993 he performs live the soundtrack of the ballet "Vozes Caladas", by the choreographer Amélia Bentes and music by José Peixoto, in shows of Companhia de Dança de Almada.

In 1994 he made the arrangements for the album 'Raiano' by Janita Salomé, also forming part of the musicians who recorded it. He made several concerts with the "Orquestra Som do Mundo" and with the saxophonist Carlos Martins.

In 2000 Mário Delgado composed the "Filactera" project, dedicated to his comic book heroes, responding to an order from the Porto Jazz Festival for this year's edition on comic book themes, which are part of his own imagination . [notes 1] For this project brings together the four musicians Alexandre Frazão , drums , Andrzej Olejniczak , tenor saxophone , Carlos Barretto , Contrabass , Claus Nymark Trombone , joined by Mario Delgado himself on guitar . The album is recorded this year for Clean Feed .

With bassist Carlos Barretto he founded "Carlos Barretto Trio", which eventually became the trio project "Carlos Barretto Lokomotiv", which also includes drummer José Salgueiro . Over time, he records with this trio albums such as "Suite of the Earth" (Bab / Dargil / 1998), "Silences" (Musical Focus / 2000), "Lokomotive" / 2002) and "Labyrinths" (Clean Feed / 2010).

In 2004 the TGB project (Tuba, Guitar and Drums) with drummer Alexandre Frazão and Tubista Sérgio Carolino appears , which not only presents an improbable formation, but which does not only result from an experience made up of the sum of the three instruments, but rather an approach innovative and mature approach in which the three instruments contribute to an unprecedented final outcome [footnote 2] , and which can hardly be ascertained a priori . The album brings together compositions and composers as diverse as Jorge Palma ("Only"), Carlos Barretto ("3.4.7"), Thelonious Monk ("Brilliant Corners"), Bud Powell ("Un Poco Loco") and even Led Zeppelin "Black Dog").

In 2010 the TGB group re-edit, this time the album "Evil Things" that has the particularity of having Paulo Ramos as guest. Unlike the previous one, this is a much more rock-oriented album, in a heavy strand, generating what in All.About.Jazz describes itself as a light-metal / jazz aura, fused with a resonance of a jazz- blues-rock, culminating in a tone-diffuse ending .

With bassist Carlos Bica , Delgado performs some concerts on the album "Single" , Bica's first solo album, as his guest. [notes 3]

With Led Zeppelin , Led Zeppelin , and Led Zeppelin , the band plans to release Led Zeppelin as the band's first album. recreate and honor as faithfully as possible, without arrangements or adaptations the music of Led Zeppelin, a group that is also part of Delgado's own imagery. [footnotes 4] .

As current projects, in addition to continuing to participate in bands and recordings of other Portuguese musicians of the most varied musical areas, Delgado keeps active the projects "Filactera", "TGB", "Led ON", "Lokomotiv", performances with their own groups, the participation in the band of Maria João and the musical direction of the band of Janita Salomé.

Between 1990 and 2000, Mário Delgado maintained a pedagogical activity, linked to the Jazz School of the Hot Clube de Portugal and to its Itinerant Courses. After that date, he was a guitar and combos teacher at the Barreiro Jazz School and participated in workshops and other music training sessions. He is currently a teacher at the Jazz Course at the Amateur Music Academy in Lisbon and at the Jazz degree at the University of Évora .

Participated in 1995 at the "6th Annual IASJ Meeting" in Israel where he represented the Hot Club of Portugal Jazz School. In 2005 he was awarded the Carlos Paredes Prize awarded by the Chamber of Vila Franca de Xira to the Tuba Guitar and Drums of the collective TGB (Carolino, Delgado, Frazão)."
