Recorded at Thelonious, in Bordeaux, France, on October 21th, 1999, by Antoine Martin.
Recorded live at Thelonious in Bordeaux, France, on October 21, 1999, New Light brings together three uncompromising voices in free jazz: pioneering drummer Sunny Murray, saxophonist and vocalist Arthur Doyle, and trumpeter Rasul Siddik. Released by Lithuania's NoBusiness Records, this previously unissued concert documents an intense meeting of musicians whose collective history reaches from the formative years of free jazz through the radical improvisational developments of the 1970s and beyond. Without a bassist or harmonic instrument, the trio creates a remarkably open musical environment, relying on rhythmic intuition, spontaneous interaction, and an expansive range of instrumental expression.
Murray, whose groundbreaking work with Cecil Taylor and Albert Ayler helped redefine the drummer's role in free jazz, provides a constantly shifting foundation of cymbal textures, rolling percussion, and irregular rhythmic accents. Doyle, known for his ferocious tenor saxophone playing and distinctive vocal improvisations, moves between turbulent reed passages, searching melodic phrases, flute, and raw vocal expression. Siddik, whose associations with Lester Bowie, Henry Threadgill, and the Black Artists Group established him as an important figure in creative jazz, contributes incisive trumpet lines that alternately confront and complement Doyle's forceful improvisations.
The album comprises four extended performances, beginning with a fifteen-minute collective improvisation before moving into Doyle's "African Express." The trio then offers an expansive interpretation of Don Cherry's "Complete Communion," connecting their late-century explorations with one of the defining compositions of 1960s avant-garde jazz. An unidentified final piece completes the program, with the musicians moving between explosive collective passages, fractured melodic exchanges, and moments of relative openness. Throughout, Murray's free-flowing percussion allows Doyle and Siddik to move independently while maintaining a powerful sense of collective direction.
Recorded by Antoine Martin at a concert produced by Philippe Alen for Musique OuVertE, the performance has been remastered by Ar nas Zujus at MAMAstudios, with design by Jeff DiPerna and liner notes by Philippe Alen and Roy Morris. Issued alongside the companion album Incantations, drawn from the same evening, New Light preserves an important encounter between three singular improvisers, capturing the urgency, unpredictability, and expressive freedom at the heart of their music.

• Show Bio for Sunny Murray "James Marcellus Arthur "Sunny" Murray (born September 21, 1936 in Idabel, Oklahoma) is one of the pioneers of the free jazz style of drumming. Murray spent his youth in Philadelphia before moving to New York City where he began playing with Cecil Taylor: "We played for about a year, just practicing, studying - we went to workshops with Varèse, did a lot of creative things, just experimenting, without a job" He was featured on the influential 1962 concerts in Denmark released as Nefertiti the Beautiful One Has Come. Murray was among the first to forgo the drummer's traditional role as timekeeper in favor of purely textural playing. "Murray's aim was to free the soloist completely from the restrictions of time, and to do this he set up a continual hailstorm of percussion ... continuous ringing stickwork on the edge of the cymbals, an irregular staccato barrage on the snare, spasmodic bass drum punctuation and constant, but not metronomic, use of the sock-cymbal" After his period with Taylor's group, Murray's influence continued as a core part of Albert Ayler's trio who recorded Spiritual Unity: "Sunny Murray and Albert Ayler did not merely break through bar lines, they abolished them altogether." He later recorded under his own name for ESP-Disk and then when he moved to Europe for BYG Actuel." ^ Hide Bio for Sunny Murray • Show Bio for Arthur Doyle "Arthur Doyle (June 26, 1944 January 25, 2014) was an American jazz saxophonist, flutist, zanzithophonist and vocalist. Arthur Doyle was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1944. He was inspired to play the saxophone as child, after watching Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington play music on television. He received a degree in Music Education from Tennessee State University. His first professional performance was with trumpeter Walter Miller, a Sun Ra alumnus. He often performed with Gladys Knight & the Pips, among others, in the R&B genre as well as in jazz. Although he performed primarily in Nashville early on in his career, he did go on tours that took him as far as Detroit. Doyle was not initially interested in free jazz, but after a performing for a Black Panthers festival he gradually gravitated toward free jazz, and sometimes appeared in concert with Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra. Arthur Doyle's first recorded appearance was on Noah Howard's album The Black Ark. He would later appear on Milford Grave's album Babi Music, and Alan Silva's Desert Music, as well as performances with The Blue Humans. His first recording session as a leader was on Alabama Feeling, released in 1978. He appeared on a number of recordings in the 1990s and throughout the first decade of the 2000s as a leader, solo artist, or sideman. His last performance was recorded in 2013 and released on DVD." ^ Hide Bio for Arthur Doyle • Show Bio for Rasul Siddik American jazz trumpeter Rasul Siddik (19492023) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and became an important figure in avant-garde jazz through his associations with the Black Artists Group (BAG) and Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). Known for his expressive tone and inventive improvisational approach, he performed and recorded with Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy, Henry Threadgill, David Murray, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, and Archie Shepp. After relocating to Paris in the 1990s, Siddik remained active in European creative music circles, leading his Now! Artet and collaborating with musicians across jazz and African musical traditions. His recordings as a leader include House of Art and Contemplation. ^ Hide Bio for Rasul Siddik
