Recorded live at Kaleidophon Festival in Ulrichsberg, Austria, the trio of Urs Leimgruber on soprano saxophone, Jacques Demierre on amplified spinet, and Thomas Lehn on analogue synthesizer engages in a tense, hyper-attentive electroacoustic exchange, where dense textures, volatile interactions, and precise collective listening shape an ever-shifting dialog rooted in European free improv.

Recorded live at the Kaleidophon Festival, in Ulrichsberg, Austria, on April 28th, 2024, by Alfred Reiter.
LDL brings together soprano saxophone, amplified spinet and analog synthesizer in a finely balanced exchange of precision and volatility. Drawing from deep roots in European free improvisation and contemporary music, their music unfolds as a dense, hyper-attentive dialogue where structure and spontaneity are in constant negotiation."-Relative Pitch
"The free-improvising LDL trio - Swiss soprano sax player Urs Leimgruber, pianist and keyboard player Jacques Demierre (who also collaborates with Leimgruber in a duo), and German EMS analogue synth and sound processing player Thomas Lehn - emerged from the trio LDP - Leimgruber, Demierre, and the late American double bass master Barre Philips, which worked between 2001 and 2021, and hosted Lehn in Willisau (jazzwerkstatt, 2019). LDL recorded its debut live album, in the endless wind, in 2023 (Wide Ear, 2024), continuing LDP's aesthetics, which recorded most of its albums in live settings.the eerie glow of jellyfish was recorded live at the Kaleidophon Festival in Ulrichsberg, Austria, in April 2024 (where LDP + Lehn performed in 2019), and features a five-movement suite. Demierre plays the amplified spinet (which he played in the duo album with Leimgruber, It Forgets About The Snow, Creative Sources, 2021), so two keyboards - the acoustic, harpsichord-like spinet and the vintage analogue synthesizer, both augmented by Lehn's live sound processing, embrace Leimgruber's soprano sax at the center of the sound image.
the eerie glow of jellyfish is an uncompromising, tension-filled, and volatile improvisation, relying on deep listening and thoughtful, precise exploration of the performance's acoustic space. LDL is deeply immersed in a stubborn, collective process of continuously filling and emptying the sound space, allowing the unorthodox instrumentation and LDL's idiosyncratic sonic palettes to manifest themselves in the most personal and freest manner possible. This captivating process suggests LDL as a live organism that acts within an unpredictable, highly resonant, and often noisy, yet hyper-attentive dialogue where elusive structure and spontaneous, individual musical events are in constant negotiation. LDL always challenges and disrupts the individual sonic palettes and never resorts to familiar sonic options or narratives.
the eerie glow of jellyfish offers an insightful listening experience that transforms the soprano sax, spinet, and the analog synth into new, surprising sonic dimensions. LDL's profound sensibility of listening liberates its instruments, far beyond our preconceptions. It is a sonic journey that visits close and faraway exotic, otherworldly, and the freest sonic territories, but with deep roots in European free improvisation and contemporary music."-Eyal Hareuveni, The Free Jazz Collective

Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Urs Leimgruber "Born Lucerne, 1952; saxophones, composer. Urs Leimgruber has been active for many years in the areas of contemporary improvisation, composition, jazz and new music. One of his earliest associations was as a member of the electric jazz/free music group 'Om' with Christy Doran, Fredy Studer and Bobby Burri, and he later formed the 'Reflexionen' quartet with Don Friedman and Bobby Burri in New York. More recently, his own projects have included 'Ensemble Bleu', 'Xylem', e_a.sonata 02 with the ARTE saxophone quartet, as well as a long association with Fritz Hauser: as a duo with the ongoing Music for saxophone and percussion; in the Leimgruber/Roidinger/Hauser trio; a trio with Joëlle Léandre; and a trio with Marilyn Crispell. He later formed the 'quartet noir' with Marilyn Crispell, Joëlle Léandre and Fritz Hauser, a trio with Jacques Demierre and Barre Phillips and the group SIX with Jacques Demierre, Isabelle Duthoit, Charlotte Hug, Dorothea Schürch and Thomas Lehn. Urs Leimgruber has also performed extensively as a solo artist and has been involved in mixed media presentations, providing music for dance, radio plays and film. Urs Leimgruber has undertaken concert tours in Western and Eastern Europe, USA, Canada, South America and Japan, and appeared at concerts and on recordings with such musicians as Steve Lacy, Fred Frith, Evan Parker, Joe McPhee, Lauren Newton, Michel Doneda, Keith Rowe, Günter Christmann, Sunny Murray and Günter Müller among many others." ^ Hide Bio for Urs Leimgruber • Show Bio for Jacques Demierre "The pianist and composer Jacques Demierre was born in 1954 in Geneva. His musical itinerary is varied: improvisation, jazz contemporary music. As a composer, he is mainly self-taught. He writes for concert use, for the stage and for modern dance. He has received commissions for both jazz and contemporary music. The recording by singer Magali Schwartz of three pieces inspired by her voice is testimony to a rare artistic experience. Je deviendrai Médée, Désir d'azur: musique de danse and Bleu are the results of an intense collaboration which began in 1985-86 and, via vocal and instrumental improvisation, gradually led to a kind of common vocal territory, a veritable research laboratory which produced compositions as well as new ideas for vocal experimentation." ^ Hide Bio for Jacques Demierre • Show Bio for Thomas Lehn "Thomas Lehn was Born in Fröndenberg (Germany) in 1958. Since the early 1980s Thomas Lehn has been working as a author and performer of contemporary music. After studying recording engineering - piano with Prof. Wilfried Kassebaum - at the Music Academy of Detmold in Germany, studies at the Music Academy of Cologne with Peter Degenhardt and Prof. Klaus Oldemeyer (classical piano) and with Frank Wunsch and Francis Coppieters (jazz piano) completed his academical education. In the 80ies he took part on courses of Studio for pianistic interpretation held by Prof. Jürgen Uhde. As an interpreting pianist he has been playing concerts since 1982 - performing both contemporary new music including numerous first performances and traditional composed music of the classical and romantical period. In 1989 he initiated the chamber ensemble Trio Dario and four years later the Mengano Quartett, performing compositions of the contemporary avant-garde, in particular numerous first performances of comissioned works. Developed parallel to his work as a pianist, since the early 1990s his major and widely reknown work has been performing and producing live-electronic music. Rooted in the experience of a wide spectrum of musical fields based on his background as an interpreting and improvising pianist in classical-, contemporary and jazz-music and having been involved in numerous other projects like music theatre, dance, multi-media, studio pre-/post-production etc., he has been developing an individual 'language' of electronic music. The electronic equipment he uses consists of analogue synthesizers of the late 1960s, and since 1994 in particular the EMS Synthi A. Besides the substantial sound qualities of its analogue synthesis, the facilities of this modular instrument - for example to modify electronic sounds very directly as well as to combine and to control several parameters of the sound synthesis at the same time - allows him to spontaneously act in close contact with the various structural degrees of the musical process. In 2000 his solo album Feldstärken had been released on German label Random Acoustics. Up today, his discography enclosures about 80 CD publications. Numerous appearances at major international festivals of contemporary musics and concerts tours in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hungaria, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA give evidence of his international profile and recognition. He has been involved in projects promoted and/or supported by the Goethe-Institutes in Belgrade, Boston, Bratislava, Budapest, Chicago, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Lille, Lissabon, London, Manchester, Marseille, Milano, Montreal, Palermo, Rome, San Francisco, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Toronto, Warsaw, Wellington and York. His musical activities enclosure long term and newer ensemble collaborations as well as involvements in numerous specific single projects. Long term collaborations are ensembles like KONK PACK, TOOT, THERMAL, FUTCH, MIMEO, SPEAK EASY, 6IX, VARIO-34, as well as the duo works with Marcus Schmickler, Tiziana Bertoncini, Gerry Hemingway, Paul Lovens, Frédéric Blondy Urs Leimgruber and John Butcher. More recently formed ensembles are the duos with Benoît Moreau and with the video artist Kjell Bjørgeengen, trio formations with John Butcher involving pianists John Tilbury and Matthew Shipp. Further he is pianist and founding member of the ensemble]h[iatus, an ensemble for interpretation and improvisation of contemporary music, whichs members are all experienced interpreters and improvisers. The ensemble compiles concert programs integrating/alternating notated and real-time-created contemporary music. It has been first-performing commissioned works by Vinko Globokar, Peter Jakober, Jennifer Walshe, Anthony Pateras besides performing compositions of the contemporary repertoire. Besides performing his own electronic music, in the recent years Thomas Lehn became more active as a synthesizer interpreter of electronic compositions. The realisation of Boguslav Schaeffer's Electronic Symphony - live performed in 2010 and 2011 - has been documented on the CD PRES Scores on polish label Bolt/Monotype. In 2012 he world premierred OCCAM VI for synthesizer solo by Éliane Radigue at Berghain Berlin during festival Faithful! and - together with KlangForum Wien - dort for synthesizer and 15 piece ensemble by Austrian composer Peter Jakober at musikprotokoll Graz and at Konzerthaus Vienna." ^ Hide Bio for Thomas Lehn
