"Victoria, British Columbia-based composer Christopher Butterfield follows his acclaimed collaboration with Quatuor Bozzini, 2017's Trip, with Souvenir. The disc showcases hisdexterous and utterly unconventional handling of ensemble colour as well as his irrefutable personality. Each of its four constituent, expertly performed by veteran new music ensemble Aventa, unfolds vibrant aural scenery built from knotty contrapuntal figures and an ever-changing instrumental palette. Their animated gestures ricochet off of one another in a boisterous yet playful debate where tensions seldom resolve. Although this wild, abstract banter acts as the album's through-line, Butterfield's acute sense of restraint and balance carves out breath and generates variety throughout. Encompassing everything from a homage to Walter Benjamin to a wayward vibraphone concerto, Souvenir is full of surprising turns and oblique references.
Once praised as "highly original" by the late "Blue" Gene Tyranny, Butterfield's professional trajectory has remained staunchly unconventional. In addition to partnerships with several noted interpreters, his career has variously included a recording of Kurt Schwitters' legendary sound-poem Ursonate, collaboration with John Oswald, a residency with the Victoria Symphony, and installations with Sandra Meigs He has adjudicated for theInternational Gaudeamus Composition Competition and taught at the Ostrava Days Institute, in addition to holding an associate professorship at University of Victoria since 1996. Butterfield studiedcomposition with Czech-Canadian iconoclast Rudolf Komorous at the University of Victoria, BC, and Turkish-American composer Bülent Arel at Stony Brook University, NY. • Show Bio for Christopher Butterfield "Christopher Butterfield. Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, 1952. Composer. Born in Vancouver in 1952, Christopher Butterfield moved to Halifax N.S. when he was six weeks old. As a chorister in King's College Choir in the UK, he absorbed the English choral tradition. On his return to Canada in the mid-60's he was immediately exposed to pop radio and the musical and artistic avant-garde. He's been trying to bring all these elements together ever since. After studying composition with Rudolf Komorous at the University of Victoria, and Bülent Arel at SUNY Stony Brook, he moved to Toronto where he became involved in the performance art/sound poetry scene there. Between 1977 and 1982 he mounted installations at Mercer Union, YYZ, and, under the pseudonym Isobel Foot, at the A.K.A. Gallery. He also played lead guitar in the rock band Klo for seven years. In 1992 he moved back to the west coast to teach composition at the University of Victoria. Career highlights include performing Kurt Schwitters' Ursonata on tour with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company in the US and Europe in 1996/97; the production of his opera Zurich 1916, at the Banff Summer Festival in 1998; composer in residence of the Victoria Symphony 1999-2002; the premiere of his score for Bill Coleman's dance epic Convoy PQ17 in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2001 (remounted in Victoria in 2013); the first performance of his complete settings of Jacques Prévert's Contes pour enfants pas sages in Toronto by Continuum Contemporary Music and Choir 21 (2012). Recent activities include co-ordinating and curating the Cage 100 Festival in Victoria (2012), celebrating American composer John Cage's centenary; and judging the International Gaudeamus Composition competition in Utrecht, Netherlands (2012), where Bosquet, his piece for 22 flutes and 1 'cello, was performed. His most recent work, parc, a concerto for vibraphonist Rick Sacks and the Aventa Ensemble, toured to New York, Ottawa and Regina this past March. Over the years Christopher Butterfield has been the recipient of many commissions from the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Ontario and BC Arts Councils. During his stay at Stony Brook, Rick began freelancing in Manhattan performing with ensembles including The New Orchestra, Newband, The New Jersey Percussion Ensemble and The Composer's Ensemble under such directors as Arthur Weisberg and Charles Wuorinen. After teaching for two years at Bennington College (Vermont 1979/80), Rick began traveling to Toronto to perform in the art-rock band KLO. The band's success led to Permanent Resident status in 1982. Once settled in Toronto, Rick founded the PhenomeNONsemble which he used as a platform for his unique performance works mixing contemporary music practices with theatre techniques. His work in children's theatre has resulted in continuous performances throughout Europe and the US. As the principal flutist of Aventa Ensemble, Sound of Dragon, and Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra, Mark has performed extensively across five continents. Recent engagements include Innovations en Concert (Montreal), Ding Yi Chinese Chamber Music Festival (Singapore), Museo Leonora Carrington (San Luis Potosí, Mexico), Powell Street Festival (Vancouver), Melos-Ethos International Festival of Contemporary Music (Bratislava), GroundSwell (Winnipeg), Núcleo Música Nova International Symposium of New Music (Curitiba, Brazil), and the ISCM World New Music Days in Vancouver. As a freelance musician, she has performed with a variety of regional ensembles, including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Symphony Orchestra and Pacific Opera Victoria. Emily holds an AVCM from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto), a B.Mus. in Performance and Theory from Wilfrid Laurier University and a M.Mus. in Performance from the University of British Columbia, studying with Dr. Amy Hamilton, Lorna McGhee and Camille Churchfield. Prior to entering university, Emily studied with her friend and mentor, Dr. Mary Byrne. AK is also a founding member of both the AdMare Wind Quintet and Cascadia Reed Quintet, and has enjoyed many musical adventures, from Couperin to cutting-edge, with both groups. During the Pandemic, she has been busy making a wide variety of recordings and is looking forward to a number of new releases in the months to come. Further studies took her to Toronto, Banff, and then to Boston Massachusetts where she attended the New England Conservatory of Music. There she was able to pursue her interest in the Baroque bassoon, and was granted a Graduate Diploma Historical Performance with distinction in performance. Armed only with a handful of bassoons and a desire to play them, Katrina moved to London, England where she was lucky enough to spend eighteen years playing them (as well as several others that presented themselves along the way). Specializing in historical performance, she played and recorded with many of the period instrument ensembles in Britain and Europe, including The English Concert, The King's Consort, The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The Academy of Ancient Music, The Hanover Band, The Gabrieli Consort and Players, L'Orchestre de la Champs Elysees, The Orchestra of "The Sixteen", and The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. After several years of return visits to Canada to play with Early Music Vancouver ensembles and The Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Katrina and her husband (British horn player Andrew Clark) relocated to the West Coast in late 2010, and established themselves near Ladysmith where they have a speciality brass making workshop producing horns and trumpets." ^ Hide Bio for Katrina Russell • Show Bio for Darnell Linwood "Originally from Saskatoon, Darnell Linwood was Principal Horn with the Regina Symphony Orchestra and since moving to Victoria in 2003, she has been active as both a chamber and orchestral musician playing with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Calgary Philharmonic, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Victoria Symphony. A strong advocate for new music, Darnell is a co-founder of Aventa Ensemble, where she has been featured on local concerts, tours and recordings. Performance highlights include the world premiere of Giorgio Magnanensi's Ethuiá V for horn and electronics, as well as recordings of Gilles Tremblay's Le signe du lion (Centredisc) and Pierre Boulez' Dérive II (CBC). Darnell has also been featured in such repertoire as György Ligeti's Trio for Horn, Violin and Piano, Poul Ruders' Horn Trio, Hans Abrahamsen's Six Pieces and Simon Steen-Andersen's In Spite of, and maybe even therefore. " ^ Hide Bio for Darnell Linwood • Show Bio for Marcus Goddard "During his nearly twenty-year tenure as Associate Principal Trumpet with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Marcus Goddard has been a featured soloist on performances of Ligeti's Mysteries of the Macabre and Manfredini's Concerto for Two Trumpets. Goddard was the Acting Principal Trumpet of the VSO between 2004 and 2005. During this time, Goddard was the principal trumpet on the Grammy and Juno Award-winning recording of the Barber, Walton, and Korngold violin concertos with violinist James Ehnes conducted by Maestro Bramwell Tovey. While serving as Acting Co-Principal Trumpet of the CBC Radio Orchestra, Goddard was a featured soloist on a recording of Alan Hovhaness' Prayer of St. Gregory. Goddard has been a member of the Turning Point Ensemble since its establishment and also frequently performs with other ensembles such as Aventa Ensemble, the Vancouver Opera, Standing Wave, and on film recordings with the Vancouver Film Orchestra. Goddard recently toured southern Germany with his wife, Angela Goddard, and their two daughters in a critically acclaimed program for trumpet, organ, violin and soprano. Scott moved to Victoria after winning a one-year bass trombone position with the Victoria Symphony for the 2005/6 season. The following year he secured the position of Principal Bass Trombone with the Vancouver Island Symphony. Scott is an extremely active chamber musician both as a member of the Pinnacle Brass Quintet and iTromboni. Demonstrating his great versatility, Scott can also been seen playing jazz, pop and rock around Victoria, as well as in most of the musical theatre pits. As an instructor, Scott teaches privately as well as at the University of Victoria where he teaches chamber music, a pep band and private instruction. She studied privately with Nicolai Chumacenko, Sandra Goldberg, Ayla Erduran, and Burkhard Godhoff. She holds a Masters degree in music performance from Bilkent University, in Ankara Turkey, and an associate teaching diploma from the Victoria Conservatory of Music in Victoria BC Canada. Currently she performs with the Galiano Ensemble, Victoria Symphony, Emily Carr String Quartet and the Aventa Ensemble. She has been a featured soloist with numerous orchestras, performing in France, Switzerland, Italy, Turkey, North America, Costa Rica, Oman and Bahrain. She has also collaborated with many recognized musicians of including, Martin Fischer-Dieskau, Jamie Parker, Lorraine Min. In 2009, Muge performed the world premiere of a piece dedicated to her called Archimedes' Codex composed by Michael Oesterle. He is a member of the Victoria Symphony and the Galiano Ensemble. He has participated in the Shaw festival, the Charlottetown Festival and Les Jeune Virtuose Montreal. In 2004, Mieka participated in Tafelmusik's Baroque Summer Institute where her love of period performance practice began.
