A superb mix of propulsive free jazz and pensively introspective free improv from the quartet of Frank Gratkowski on alto saxophone, clarinets & flutes, Achim Kaufmann on piano, Wilbert de Joode on bass, and Tony Buck (The Necks) on drums & percussion, recorded in a live concert at Loft, in Koln, Germany in 2018 for six inspired collective improvisations.

Franz Hautzinger formed the orchestra in 1995 as an ensemble for experimental music, developing into an advanced improvising band that incorporates a shifting and diverse set of styles, heard here at Klangspuren Festival in 2019 with Hautzinger on trumpet, Christian Fennesz on guitar & laptop, Otomo Yoshihide on guitar & turntables, Luc Ex on bass, and Tony Buck on drums.

The Necks 16th release layers polyrhythmic material to form seething blocks of sound, in two long pieces, one more stripped back to the live trio, the other featuring multiple strata of swirling Hammonds, noise-guitar and electronics.
