The band name Omawi is a conglomerate of this Dutch trio's name, appropriate for the nearly telepathic interaction of pianist Marta Waleris, drummer Onno Govaert and double bassist Wilbert de Joode, captured in their first live performance after the pandemic lockdown at Zaal100, in Amsterdam, their enthusiasm and pent-up expression clearly evident in five extraordinary improvisations.

Recorded live at Zaal100, in Amsterdam, The Netherland, on October 12th, 2021, by Ron Ruiten.
"Recorded live in the period in-between lock-downs. waive captures this special moment of the first concert experience since the covid-19 outbreak for all who were present in the room that night. Recorded when we had to slow down, abandon, sign out, solo, let go, waive.. but when we also could just look, welcome and surrender to the everblooming."-Relative Pitch
"The Dutch band "Omawi" (short for Onno, Marta and Wilbert) consists of Marta Warelis on piano, Onno Govaert on drums, and Wilbert de Joode on double bass. This is their third album, after Inscapes (2018) and Live At Roze Tanker (2020), and it is an absolute winner. I already very much liked their previous albums, but this one goes even a step further.
Warelis is an exceptional pianist, a little bit in the same vein as Eve Risser, someone who can appreciate the percussive and lyrical aspects of her instrument in equal measure, full of ideas and a good sense of sonic coherence and unrelenting dynamics. Her natural drive and energy are even made stronger and more powerful by Onno Gevaert's fireworks on the drums, and De Joode's equally exceptional skills and experience on bass. The trio moves as one, and is a real pleasure to hear from the very first note to the last.
The album is a live performance, recorded in Zaal 100 in Amsterdam on October 12, 2021, in between the Covid-19 lockdowns and it presents a wonderful kind of escape, in which all the frustrations, social isolation and uncertainty get thrown overboard in a one hour long eruption of shards of sound, repetitive, percussive, urgent, with a strong sense of pulse without explicit rhythm, intense, vibrant, energetic, relentless, full of passion, power, fire, muscle, even in the quiet, more intense moments, but definitely when the volume picks up, in short, music that becomes a physical manifestation of internal energy and a real will to live again and to share it.
Don't miss this one."-Stef Gijssels, The Free Jazz Collective

Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Marta Warelis "Pianist Marta Warelis (1986) is a vibrant performer with a strong preference for improvisation and experimentation in all genres. She continually aims for instant composing on the basis of new sounds and influences. Her work draws inspiration from music across the globe including cumbia, Angolan dance music, as well as jazz, western classical music and the various schools of free improvisation. Born and raised in Poland where she graduated with honours from WSJiMR in Wroclaw, Marta moved to Groningen in 2010 to attend the Prins Claus Conservatory. In 2014 she found her place in Amsterdam, very quickly becoming an active member of the local improvisers' scene. Marta has appeared frequently in the Bimhuis, where in 2017 she was given a Carte Blanche in recognition of her remarkable talents. She performs with a variety of creative musicians including Michael Moore, Ab Baars, Mike Reed, Andy Moor, Joost Buis, dancers Lily Kiara and Michael Shumacher, as well with such groups as Hupata!, Omawi, Future Neighbor, Polyband, Edge Ensemble, Strings5, Xavier Pamplona, Warelis/Rosaly/Lumley/Dikeman and Bazooka." ^ Hide Bio for Marta Warelis • Show Bio for Onno Govaert Onno Govaert is a drumer from Amsterdamn performing free jazz, swing and rock. A self-taught musician, he has been playing the double-bass since 1982. He began working in groups that improvised within a jazz framework. Other musicians were soon drawn to his idiosyncratic style, and in the mid 80s he played in groups led by Vera Vingerhoeds, Armando Cairo and Ig Henneman where he further developed his improvisation skills. He came into contact with such musicians as J.C.Tans, Rinus Groeneveld, Michiel Braam, Han Bennink, Han Buhrs (Schismatics) and Ab Baars. De Joode is currently one of the most active bass players on the European improvised music circuit. His individual style and musicality transforms the double bass into an equal partner in the most varied ensembles. A personal tone colour, exploration of the outer registers, quirky improvisations and the use of gut strings contribute to an instantly recognizable and intriguing sound. The seventeen improvised pieces on his first solo cd Olo (distributed by ToonDist) show how rich and complex his sound on the double bass is." ^ Hide Bio for Wilbert de Joode
