Pospieszalski, Marek Octet: No Other End Of The World Will There Be (Clean Feed)

Continuing his project dedicated to 20th century Polish composers, saxophonist Marek Pospieszalski leads his creative octet through open and collectively improvised arrangements of works from six Polish female composers — Barbara Buczek, Elżbieta Sikora, Grażyna Pstrokońska-Nawratil and Marta Ptaszyńska — in wide-ranging and often startling impressions of the original works.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Marek Pospieszalski continues the project dedicated to the twentieth-century Polish school of composition, this time focusing on the works of women. Starting from the String Quartet No. 1 by Grażyna Bacewicz, to the first compositions by Agata Zubel. Just like on the well-received first album, here too the octet does not use scores, the main emphasis is on collective improvisation. Original compositions are a pretext to create impressions on the basis of great works that tell about the current times, as evidenced by the use of means from the world of sound design, noise and electronic music. This time the forms of the works are concise, but full of sudden twists, multicolored, and sometimes radical like the work of Polish female composers. It is a great opportunity to present eleven outstanding artists, e.g. Barbara Buczek, Elżbieta Sikora, Grażyna Pstrokońska-Nawratil and Marta Ptaszyńska. The title of the new album was taken from "A Song on the End of the World", a composition by Agata Zubel to words by Czesław Miłosz, and it seems to resonate strongly today."-Clean Feed

"The saxophonist and composer Marek Pospieszalski treated the enthusiasts of improvised sounds with an excellent, ultra-modern triptych. After the album "Dürer's Mother" and "Polish Composers of the 20th Century" there is another release: the album "No Other End Of The World Will There Be" dedicated to Polish composers. It is a kind of jazz group of Polish Composers.

In this year's Jazz Forum critics' poll, Marek Pospieszalski was honored with the Music of the Year title, and his album "Polish Composers of the 20th Century" was chosen the Album of the Year. Similar awards were given to the artist as part of the prestigious Grand Prix Melomani (Artist of the Year, Album of the Year). The saxophonist has been active on the music scene for many years, mainly in his own projects (Maldives, Marek Pospieszalski Quartet, Marek Pospieszalski Quartet). In 2022, he made two albums that were well received by the audience and critics: "Dürer's Mother" and "Polish Composers of 20th Century" (this project became the reason for inviting the Sacrum Profanum festival to material with Polish female composers). Both albums were released by the renowned Portuguese label Clean Feed Records, thanks to which the music of the Polish artist gained international fame, making Marek Pospieszalski one of the most interesting Polish artists.

This time Marek Pospieszalski's octet (Marek Pospieszalski - soprano, alto & tenor saxophone, clarinet & tape, Piotr Chęcki - tenor & baritone saxophone, Tomasz Dąbrowski - trumpet, Tomasz Sroczyński - viola, Szymon Mika - electric guitar & acoustic guitar, Grzegorz Tarwid - piano, Max Mucha-double bass, Qba Janicki-drums & soundboard) continues the project dedicated to the 20th-century Polish school of composition, now focusing on the works of women. Original compositions are a pretext to create impressions based on great works about the present (as evidenced by the use of means from the world of sound design, noise and electronic music). The forms of the works are concise, full of sudden twists, multicolored, and sometimes radical, such as the works of composers Barbara Buczek, Elżbieta Sikora, Grażyna Pstrokońska - Nawratil or Marta Ptaszyńska. Starting from the "1st String Quartet" by Grażyna Bacewicz, to compositions by Bernadetta Matuszczak ("Libera Me"), Agata Zubel ("Song about the End of the World"), Hanna Kulenty ("Breathe") or Lucia Dlugoszewski ("Angel of the Inmost Heaven" ). As in previous albums, the octet does not use scores, placing the main emphasis on collective improvisation, and original compositions are a pretext for creating their own, original associations."-Madalena,

"Praised by DownBeat Magazine as one of Europe's most versatile and curious players, Polish-born trumpeter Tomasz Dąbrowski - Scandinavian-based musician and composer makes music that whispers then screams; beautiful, open melodies merging into non-trumpet-like noise.

With nine albums released under his own name and dozens of recordings as a co-leader and sideman, he is considered as one of the most active and gifted trumpeters and composers in Europe. Dividing his time between solo projects and cooperating with some of the finest musicians of the day in Europe, South America and Asia. His strong, instantly-recognizable sound and expressive playing are inspired by Eastern European folk, free jazz and contemporary avant-garde music.

Tomasz has mostly been known for his work with TOM TRIO [debut album nominated 2013 to the Fryderyk Award - Polish Music Industry Award], Japanese quartet AD HOC, FREE4ARTS, OCEAN FANFARE, and string of concerts S-O-L-O: 30th Birthday / 30 Concerts / 30 Cities. The youngest member of Globe Unity who worked with great artists, such as Tomasz Stańko, Evan Parker, Kris Davis, Tyshawn Sorey, Fredrik Lundin, Maria Faust, Riccardo Del Fra, Michiyo Yagi, Hiroshi Minami and Marilyn Mazur. Dąbrowski is a member of a Danish musician-run collective and record label Barefoot Records.

Tomasz Dąbrowski has always been rejecting the conventions of lineup choice: starting with a trio without a harmonic instrument, forming duos with drums and a trio with piano and drums to playing solo trumpet concerts. Working with string orchestra, writing for big band and experimenting with dance and theater. Always looking for new sounds, textures and forms of expression, proving that the unconventional has its peculiar colour and is beautiful in its own way."
