Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Lockdown is the debut duo record by Aaron Leaney featuring legendary Québecois free-jazz pioneer, drummer Guy Thouin.

Leaney's lyrical and multi-textured tenor and alto saxophone playing is featured throughout, as is his playing on the Zimbabwean mbira and west African flulani flute. The record comprises equally of planned and deeply rehearsed compositions by both Leaney and Thouin, each with their own flavour brewed together to form a uniquely organic music.

This is the first documented studio recording of 83 year old Thouin's lifelong exploration in sound and rhythm featuring his folkloric, DIY hybrid setup behind the drums; double kick and frame drums, tablas, Tibetan singing bowls, bells, Japanese gongs and cymbals. The music focuses deeply on the intersectionality of Leaney's Indo-Caribbean heritage, Thouin's multiple exoduses to India to study with tabla guru Karamuthulla and their shared approach as jazz improvisors despite their age gap of four decades."-Aaron Leaney

Artist Biographies

"Aaron Leaney is a saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Trinidadian-Canadian musician "has a garrulous, sing-song delivery that calls to mind a relaxed, less possessed Fred Anderson. He's a natural, like a furry moth at your window" (Larry Cosentino, Signal To Noise #50). After completing his Bachelors of Music in Jazz Studies under saxophonist, Pat LaBarbara at Humber College in Toronto his musical journey led him to the vibrant avant-jazz, experimental and improv communities of Montreal. His 2022 vinyl LP "Lockdown" is a collaboration with elder and founder of Le Nouveau Jazz Libre de Quebec in 1967 the drummer, Guy Thouin. Leaney is a longstanding member in the Ratchet Orchestra and most recently is actively performing with the newly formed collective, Nebula featuring Nicolas Caloia and Kalmunity founder, Jahsun. His past music projects include collaborations with Michel Lambert, 2015 GAMIQ award nominated trio, Bord à Bord and Brandon Valdivia aka Mas Aya (Lido Pimienta). Leaney has performed with David Virelles, Chris Dadge (Lab Coast), Jean Derome, Lori Freeman, Jason Sharp, Ian Jarvis & Isaiah Ceccarelli, to name just a few."
