Zenicola, Felipe / Jose Lencastre / Joao Valinho: MAGMA (FMR)

Determined and ardent playing like the powerful creep of lava flow as the Brazilian & Portuguese trio of Felipe Zenicola (Chinese Cookie Poets, Paal Nilssen-Love) on bass, Jose Lencastre (Lencastre Nau Quartet) on saxophones and João Valinho (Creative Sources) on drums evolve their tumultuously articulate journey through a molten world of smoldering free jazz.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"José Lencastre is a saxophonist, improviser, and composer from Lisbon. He has played various musical genres over the years (Afrobeat, Semba, Choro, Poetry Slam, etc.) From 2005 onwards, he came into contact with the vibrant national improvised music movement and immediately became part of its concert and session circuit. , playing with the vast majority of Lisbon musicians and also with international artists from around the world. He is co-founder of Phonogram Unit publishing house.

Felipe Zenicola is a Brazilian bassist, composer, sound designer and producer, born in 1981 in Rio de Janeiro and today based in Lisbon. His musical production is especially directed to improvised music and its interaction with other compositional practices. Over the last 15 years he has developed a unique language in the electric bass, which stands out in projects such as the trio Chinese Cookie Poets, the quintet New Brazilian Funk, led by Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love and the trio MOVE.

João Valinho, Portuguese musician and visual artist from the suburbs of Sintra. In 2017, after completing his studies in Fine Arts, he began a career in music, seeking to conceive and execute it in his contemporary and experimental practices, working in the blazing panorama of improvised Lisbon music, from freejazz to near-silence music, as well as as in interdisciplinary approaches with dance and theater. Since then, he has had the opportunity to learn and work, in the studio and live, with excellent national and international musicians, with projects and new editions on the horizon. Music combines activity in the production of artistic objects in video, sculpture, installation, photography and drawing. More recently active with the following projects: Rodrigo Brandão Outros Espaço, Rodrigo Amado Refraction Quartet, Fashion Eternal, MOVE, Spectrum Awareness, No Nation Trio, Voltaic Trio and Anthropic Neglect."-BOTA

Artist Biographies

"Felipe Zenicola was born in 1981 in Rio de Janeiro and started playing the electric bass at the age of 15. One year after taking regular classes, he continued practicing and playing as a self-thought musician. Coming essentially from a rock background, in 2000 Felipe started drawing interest for experimental music, free jazz and free forms of improvisation. Few years later, when Rio´s exploratory music scene was growing exponentially around Plano B venue in Lapa, Zenicola was able to play regularly and that was an important moment for developing his approach towards improvisation and new ways of handling the instrument.

In 2010 Zenicola started Chinese Cookie Poets, together with Marcos Campello and Renato Godoy, one of the most acclaimed experimental music bands in Brazil. The CCP experience was key for consolidating his unique playing that explores extended techniques, a heavy, frantic and cathartic way of dealing with the bass strings, low ambient/drones, minimal ostinatos and complex rhythmic patterns: a blend which makes him a very singular voice in the electric bass language today.

Since 2014 Felipe has been collaborating regularly with Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, with whom has released two albums so far: Botafogo (Bocian/QTV) and New Brazilian Funk (PNL). For the past 15 years Zenicola has collaborated in several projects, records and concerts with great minds from different sonic planets and parts of the globe, such as Zbigniew Karkowski, Yoshihide Otomo, Negro Leo, Paal Nilssen-Love , Julie Kjær, Tetuzi Akiyama, J-P Caron, Frode Gjerstad, Arto Lindsay, Marcela Lucatelli, Cadu Tenório, Sanannda Acácia, Lars Greve, Ava Rocha, Jards Macalé, and Bill Orcutt."
