Versioning is the second part of Joe Morris' multi-part musical work Instantiation; each part is unique, composed with specific notated and operational components. Due to the way the parts are configured it is impossible to perform any of them the same way twice.
"Versioning employs a compositional element of rhythmically configured melodic fragments and phrases. The players may use the written material or simply refer to it as material improvisation. Specific processing of all melodic material is encouraged. The composition is expressed in a meter, but the players may choose a different one and choose the temp for any duration or statement including changing that within a phrase. The realization of the piece relies on the juxtaposition of the player's statements, the permutations of the original and improvised materal, and the understanding that form will result through the exchange of materal and shifts in interaction."-from the liner notes.
Five versions of the same piece are presented, sequenced in the order they were performed, showing the diverse results the composition provides.
"My goal with Instantiation is to create unique and rewarding experiences for listeners by synthesizing the meta-properties of Free music in new and creative ways. I rely on the attention to the material and the individual and collective artistry of the ensemble of players to realize a unique result with each performance."-Joe Morris
