Duplant, Bruno / Pierre Gerard: Soleil Clandestin (Edition Wandelweiser Records)

Five "Soleil Clandestin" soundscapes using abstract voice, guitar, electronics, field recordings & percussion from sound artists Bruno Duplant and Pierre Gerard, on the surface peaceful, minimal and using space and silence, but buried inside are disquieting additions through vocal abstractions placed in unusual position to the sound; curious and captivating.

Artist Biographies

"Bruno Duplant is a composer, improviser and multi-instrumentist (double bass, percussion, electronics, phonography...) living in the north of France. He has collaborated with lot of instrumentalists around the globe and has also made solo works for such labels as B-Boim, Engraved Glass, Peira, Ilse, Impulsive Habitat, Con-v, Unfathomless, Et le feu comme matière formatable technologiquement, Audiotong, Insubordinations and his own label curated with Pedro Chambel, Rhizome.s...

For him, composing, playing, improvising music is like imagining, creating and sometimes decomposing new spaces/realities, new entities. But it is also a reflection on 'memory', not the historic one, but a memory of all things, spaces & moments.

His new works, mostly based on phonographies & graphic scores, perfectly reflect that."

"pierre gerard born in 1966 (BE)

i work minimalism with acoustic instruments and electro-acoustic guitar since 2006 ..the object always present was at the center of my first research ..added a new interest in abstract voice since 2017 ..

the improvisation in situ is the source of my music work (outdoor or architectural) ..over time i could describe this research more intuitive than minimalist ..in my electroacoustic compositions i try not to lose sight of intuition, silence, and a certain form of minimalism ..

work on the object is strongly influenced by the presence of wood (assemblage/assembling, sculpture, installation _'the force fields of wood') but also glass, leather, felt and other natural materials (if possible found or recycled) ..

in objects we would sometimes see sound compositions in 3 dimensions ..besides the intuition present here too, i keep a special attention for the encounter between human gesture and the form (organic, natural, accidental ..& intuitive, minimalist) ..

each of these disciplines can occupy the architectural space, place par excellence of the gesture and the shape _'the gesture in the shape' ..

storage stolen images in the form of paint traces the human migrations mental and physical ..who can inspire my path or express my disagreement .."

Duplant, Bruno
Paysages Sans Age III
(Sublime Retreat)
Two encompassing and tranquil works of sound from French composer Bruno Duplant, the album title translating to Ageless Landscapes as Duplant envisions two terrains through slow motion tones, piano and synthetics, evocatively described in an accompanying poem that conjures expansive fog, blurred trees, hawks slowly spiraling, a history in a hillside.

everydayisagoodday
(Confront)
Starting from John Cage's Zen quote--"Every day is a good day"--the trio of Rachael Wadham on piano, Philippe Lenglet on acoustic guitar and cithar (a type of harp), and contrabass, recorded these improvisations approaching their instruments not for melodies but as tools for experimentation, from which this trio finds a wealth of inventive sound.

Duplant, Bruno / Seth Nehil
The Memory Of Things
(Sublime Retreat)
An immersive and often explosive set of dark compositions from Seth Nehil & Bruno Duplant, blending field recordings, electronics, percussion and percussive objects into a controlled chaos of inexplicably murky and uncategorizable sounds, at times like a surreal firework display, or inserted into a complex machine on the verge of collapse, all imbued with a consistent resonant hue.
Pisaro-Liu, Michael
Two Scrolls From Western Australia
(Edition Wandelweiser Records)
Composer Michael Pisaro-Liu asked guitarist Jameson Feakes and saxophonist Josten Myburgh to each select a location in Western Australia and make a set of field recordings at different times of day, providing the basis for a musical scroll akin to Chinese scroll paintings, each musician then a poetic character placed into the virtual landscape of their recordings.
Monach, Greta
Fonerga
(Edition Wandelweiser Records)
Playful in its seriousness, the sound poetry of Greta Monach (1928-2018), an early proponent of computer generated concrete poetry, and known for her notated sound poem series for four voices, "Fonerga", is performed by University of Victoria voice artists Cathy Fern Lewis, Laura Brandes, Daniel Brandes and Christopher Butterfield; awe-inspiring and exotically amusing.

Gerard, Pierre
Pieces Of Apparatus
(A New Wave of Jazz)
In the same character as a Wandelweiser/Jürg Frey work, guitarist Pierre Gérard offers up five minimalistic or reductionist improvisations, sparse works that follow the patterns of his mind and his improvisatory method, allowing his thoughts to linger and follow a music that is curiously compelling; an idiosyncratic companion to a quiet evening or afternoon.

Gerard, Pierre
Imprevu Visible Inverse
(Edition Wandelweiser Records)
Using guitars, violin, electronics, field recordings, abstract voice, and a "sound knife in the sand", Pierre Gerard recorded this set of 13 works in Liege, Belgium, and Wimereux, France, in 2019, using intuitive approaches to his minimalist electroacoustic compositions as he assembles his elements to convey human gesture and architectural form in sound.

(Edition Wandelweiser Records)
Guitarist, computer musician, and improviser Eric Wong (D.N.A.N.D.N.A. with Simon Rose) focuses on sound textures and perception of sound, in three works composed using Ableton Live that explore concepts of psychoacoustic sound through dissonance, harmonic interference and hallucinatory sound, slowly developing works of rich sonic characteristic.

Broken Silence
(Music For Contemplation, Inc.)
The music to composer Craig Shepards performance work that presents listeners with text drawn from court testimony in the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church, here concentrating on the quiet long tones generated by wind instruments and ebow strings, where pure tones pass between the musicians to build a pulsating chord that then drops away tone by tone.

Untitled 6
(Edition Wandelweiser Records)
An hour long work for the string quintet of Nigel Deane (violin), Patrick Behnke (viola), Tanner Pfeiffer (viola), Tal Katz (cello) & Julius Tedaldi (cellos) performing on two contrasting charts, one where musical elements change and recur, the other where things change but don't recur, creating a textural feel of dovetailed motion and intricate interstices.

I Am Also Here
(Edition Wandelweiser Records)
A work of silence and intervention from Manhattan-based Chinese composer and sound artist Bin Li presenting two versions of the title track, with Stefan Thut on viol & voice on the 1st version, and voice only on the 2nd, using the locations of Manhattan and Gimmelwald, Switzerland as the background of careful viol and voice placement; intriguing and compelling.
