The 2nd release from the Montreal free improvising trio Joshua Zubot (violin), Bernard Falaise (guitar) and Isaiah Ceccarelli (drums/percussion) is a magnificent example of open-minded improvisation using unusual and sparkling approaches to sound and discourse.
"From a self-professed failed polygote, instagram photographer, and an adamant non-facebook user, comes this intimate, imitative, mirror-pond of mammalian spring-songs. The Trio brews up a plethora of sonic phenomena that echoes Morton Feldman's Triadic Memories, Art Pepper's Wintermoon (more in the rhythmic sense), and melted melodic moments of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. These references are woven into a complex morphological lexicon that is intrinsic to the performers' fine-tuned intuitive capabilities.
Overall, the album maintains its sense of authenticity in the way that the performers work with one another to reach a degree of catharsis. An esculent for audiophiles, Drime's refined spatial presence is quite palpable to the auditory nerve and as such, has the propensity to induce sporadic moments of subdued synaesthesia. Subtle Lip Can's sophomore album, as the name suggests, pays its respects to tradition and is reflective of itself, suggesting that the trio has entered the Lacanian "mirror stage" in this phase of evolution. Punctual and accurate metamorphoses indicate that this caterpillar knows it will inevitably transform into a magnificent monarch.
Formed in 2007, Subtle Lip Can is Joshua Zubot (violin), Bernard Falaise (guitar) and Isaiah Ceccarelli (drums/percussion) from Montreal, Quebec. Collectively they are some of Montreal's most in demand creative musicians and have worked with other artists such as Ratchet Orchestra, Quartetski, Patrick Watson, William Parker, Marshall Allen, Matana Roberts, Michel F. Coté, Malcolm Goldstein, Sam Shalabi and Marie-Jo Thério.
Subtle Lip Can released its eponymous first album in 2010 to wide critical acclaim and played several highly memorable shows in Montréal, notably opening for Han Bennink at the Suoni per il Popolo Festival and a sold out concert during the OFF festival de jazz. The Trio embarked on its first European tour in 2012, covering six cities in Germany and Poland. A Leipzig concert promoter fittingly described the trio's intense and all consuming music as "moon ballads". 2013 saw the recording of their second album, Reflective Drime, and a Norwegian tour in ealry 2014, where they notable collaborated with composers of the nyMusickks komponistgruppe in Oslo."-Drip Audio
