The late trumpeter Bill Dixon's last concert, performing at the 2011 Victo Festival, performing with and directing an incredible group including brass players Taylor Ho Bynum, Rob Mazurek, Stephen Haynes, Graham Haynes; clarinetist Michel Cote; and cellist Glynis Loman. The music is remarkable and moody, presented in two major sections with a brief epilogue, using intensely layered and detailed harmonic language. The brass-heavy group adds power and force, where each section patiently builds to epic proportions, anchored by the muscular bass work of Ken Filiano and rock steady bursts from drummer Warren Smith.
Dixon's health was already failing at the time of this performance, and his solo was pre-recorded; his words at the epilogue are fragile yet profound, a fitting end to an incredible career. It would be hard to recommend a release more wholeheartedly...
