Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"AVVA is the duo of Toshimaru Nakamura and Billy Roisz, based in Tokyo and Vienna respectively. AVVA stands for "Audio Video/Video Audio", referring to the working method of the duo. Nakamura produces the music using the internal feedback from his no-input mixing board, Roisz uses that as the basis for her optical moving patterns, and Nakamura has a TV monitor showing Roisz' output, so the whole process is circular and created in real time.

Since 1998, Nakamura has been exploring the possibilities of his no-input mixing board in contexts ranging from solo to collaborations with Keith Rowe, Günter Müller, Sachiko M, Andrea Neumann, John Butcher and Sean Meehan. Nakamura was a prominent presence throughout the AMPLIFY 2002 box set, appearing on five of the seven CDs, and an integral part of the Good Morning Good Night, ErstLive 005 and 4g releases. He has released two superb duo projects in 2006, aluk (w/ Klaus Filip) and the stunning double CD between (w/Rowe).

Roisz has been manipulating live video in various combinations since 2000, with such musicians as Dieb13, Christof Kurzmann, and Efzeg. She specializes in feedback video and video/sound interaction, exploring the links and gaps between seeing and hearing, images and sounds. Roisz has released around fifteen individual music videos, including one on the Sonic Fiction compilation on Index and on the Efzeg CD Boogie (Grob). gdansk queen is her first full-length DVD.

Nakamura and Roisz first worked together as part of the Feedback: Order From Noise tour in the UK in the summer of 2004. They felt such an affinity for each other's working methods that they formed the AVVA duo, and have toured in both Europe and Japan. gdansk queen consists mostly of edited live recordings, as well as two pieces which were mail collaborations (the audio done by Nakamura in Tokyo, with the video later composed in real time by Roisz in Vienna). Nakamura and Roisz are ideal partners, their audio and video feedback combining to become far more than the sum of their parts, resulting in a mind-melting experience in which boundaries are constantly created and then destroyed. The design combines a cover photo from Dieter Kovacic with stills from the DVD in an elegant oversized jewel box."-Erstwhile

Artist Biographies

"Toshimaru Nakamura is a Japanese musician, active in free improvisation and Japanese onkyo.

He began his career playing rock and roll guitar, but gradually explored other types of music, even abandoning guitar, and started working on circuit bending. He uses a mixing console as a live, interactive musical instrument: "Nakamura plays the 'no-input mixing board', connecting the input of the board to the output, then manipulating the resultant audio feedback."

Nakamura's music has been described as "sounds ranging from piercing high tones and shimmering whistles to galumphing, crackle-spattered bass patterns."

Nakamura founded the ensemble A Paragon of Beauty in 1992. He has recorded solo albums, worked as a session musician, and collaborated with artists including Sachiko M ("a kindred spirit"), Otomo Yoshihide, Keith Rowe, John Butcher, Nicholas Bussmann, Taku Sugimoto, Tetuzi Akiyama, dancer Kim Ito, and drummer Jason Kahn."

Jun, Yan / Zhu Wenbo
Twice
(erstwhile)
Beijing sound artists Yan Jun and Zhu Wenbo developed this hour-long sound composition from independent recordings, a set of abstractions through recordings in the field, mechanical and electronic devices, human voice and utterance, acoustic and electronic instruments, &c. &c., made cohesive and compelling through independent time assignments by each artist; inexplicably interesting.
Dorner, Axel / Toshimaru Nakamura
In Cotton and Wool
(Ftarri)
Meeting in sound artist and vocalist Yan Jun's studio in Berlin in 2017, trumpeter Axel Dörner and no-input mixer artist Toshimaru Nakamura recorded these four active and bristling improvisations, Dörner using every inch of his instrument and treating it with electronics to create the controlled chaos and richly jarring recordings that make up this, their 2nd album together.

This Is Not The Ant
(Mikroton Recordings)
An extremely balanced group of electroacoustic improvisers, Kai Fagaschinski on clarinet and Liz Allbee on trumpet make up the acoustic side, though sounding as electronic and other-worldly as Billy Roisz on e-bass and electronics and Marta Zapparoli on reel-to-reel tapes and tape machines, creating incredibly wide-ranging and psychedelic sonic environments.
Cilantro (Angelica Castello / Billy Roisz)
Borderland
(Mikroton Recordings)
Cilantro is the duo of multi-instrumentalists Angelica Castello on paetzold, ukulele, organ, tapes, & electronics, and Billy Roisz on electric bass, organ, tv, piezzo, computer & electronics, scrutinizing the activity in bordering areas between noise and silence, tenderness and rudeness, beat and drone, inner consciousness and outer awareness, control and freedom.
Rosenberg, Reed Evan / Ethan Tripp
Medium Rude
(ErstAEU)
A journey in sound--drone, abrasive noise and subtle ambiance--in a well-paced example of non-idiomatic soundscape from the first meeting of Reed Evan Rosenberg on microphones, pedals, max, and voice, and Ethan Tripp on speakers, microphones, motors, junk.
