An apt title for this collection of improvised works for double bass and feedback mixer between long-time collaborators Kyle Motl and Carlos Domínguez Reinhardt, both members of the band Not the Circus and having previously released the duo album Artabotrys Hexapetalus, this album recorded in 2020 at Rat's Mouth in Florida for five diverse and often abrasive interactions.

"Kyle Motl is a bassist, composer, and improviser. Active in a variety of ensembles and settings, Kyle's work crosses the boundaries between idioms as wide as free jazz, contemporary concert music, and extreme metal. Current interests include extended harmonic techniques for solo bass improvisation, electroacoustic performance with live electronics and improvising software, modular compositional schemes, recursive and generative structuring, and exploration of complex sonic spectra.
Kyle is a member of the Peter Kuhn Trio, and has been performing in quartet and trio with Abbey Rader since 2011. He maintains regular duo projects with T.J. Borden, Adam Tinkle, and Drew Ceccato. The Kyle Motl Trio, featuring Kjell Nordeson and Tobin Chodos is a collaborative platform for new compositions weaving complex structures together with free improvisation. Kyle has performed alongside artists including Anthony Davis, Kidd Jordan, Mary Halvorson, Roscoe Mitchell, Mark Dresser, and Wadada Leo Smith, among others.
Kyle holds a BM from Florida Atlantic University and an MM from Florida International University. He is a DMA candidate at UC San Diego, where he studies bass with Mark Dresser."-Kyle Motl Website (http://www.kylemotl.com/about/biography/)

"Field of Fried Umbrellas is a collection of improvised works for double bass and feedback mixer exploring both acoustic and electroacoustic phenomena resulting from the interaction between certain modes of bass playing and feedback structures. The result lies somewhere between improvised music, noise, sound art, and electroacoustic music, managing to be all of the above, yet something other.
Kyle Motl (bass) and Carlos Dominguez (feedback mixer) have been playing music together since 2011. From 2011-2013, they frequently played duo and in the electronics trio, Not the Circus, with Brian Del Toro. People moved, and collaborations slowed down, punctuated by the occasional festival or telematic performance. 2019 saw a renewal of their collaboration, spurred by a performance/production project with Matt Baltrucki, Polysemic, which presented 3 simultaneous productions of a live solo bass concert treated with different production and video aesthetics.
The collaboration with Matt as engineer continued with a recording session the following day, which resulted in the previous Motl/Dominguez recording, Artabotrys Hexapetalus. Where Artabotrys Hexapetalus sets out on a wide voyage, Field of Fried Umbrellas zeroes in on specific interactions, textures, and artifacts."-TripTick Tapes
