Busolini, Cyprien / Bertrand Gauguet: Miroir (Akousis Records)

An album of intensive listening through concentrated improvisation from the long-running collaboration of French improvisers, Cyprien Busolini on viola and Bertrand Gauguet on alto saxophone, both using unfaltering techniques as they metamorphose their instruments from delicate silence to forceful tones, oscillating and vacillating across two extended improvisations.

Artist Biographies:

"Cyprien Busolini: violist Born in 1978. After classical studies of viola, Cyprien Busolini focuses mainly on contemporary repertoire and improvisation. He obtained a first viola prize at the CNR Rueil-Malmaison in the class of Françoise Gneri, then he perfected with P.Faure and P.H.Xuereb. His great interest in contemporary music and especially new works allows him to work with many composers like L.Naon, HULehmann, T.Johnson, JLGuionnet ... He has also played or created some of their solo pieces or sets. Improvisation allows him to work on other sound fields and to explore his instrument in a more personal way, notably on non-melodic and non-harmonic parameters but more focused on the matter of sound. Regularly, he works with dancers, actors, either in improvisation or for shows whose musical part he elaborates. On the other hand, he occasionally runs improvisation workshops for children. He currently plays in different ensembles, Dedalus, Onceim, and various groups of improvisation as well as in the whole Fratres, old music ensemble on old instruments. He has made several solo or Dedalus ensemble recordings, the Diagonal ensemble, but also with Garth Knox and various improvisational discs."

"Bertrand Gauguet is a musician trudging through a practice without hierarchy involving sound and music: as an improvising saxophonist, electronic music composer and as a sounds collector.

He plays since the early 2000s the alto saxophone in contexts of solo and group improvisation. His approach takes part in research on the technical areas of the instrument by which precise exploration of a sound language consists of materials produced by the breath, multiphonics and microphony.

Collaborations with John Tilbury, Robin Hayward, Franz Hautzinger, Xavier Charles, Sophie Agnel, Pascal Battus, Eric La Casa, Michel Doneda, Insub Meta Orchestra, Seijiro Murayama Tetuzi Akiyama, Toshimaru Nakamura, John Butcher, Axel Dörner, Isabelle Duthoit... Many festivals about new and experimental music (Europe, USA, Japan ...).

As an electronic music composer, he composes original music and original soundtracks with dance, movies and radio broadcast. He produced the LP The Torn Map in 2013.

In 2011, he was a resident of the villa Kujoyama in Kyoto. He studied the shakuhachi while learning to Honkyoku directory with Mr Yoshio Kurahashi.

Since 2004, he taught at the Haute Ecole des Arts du Rhin in the Sonic research program he co-founded in 2007. He leads the generative improvisation workshop at CFMI in Sélestat since 2012 and conducted educational workshops at the Cité de la Musique in Paris from 2002 to 2012."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Cyprien and Bertrand have been playing together for several years. Their music, improvised, sober and tenuous, invites the listener to immerse himself in a state of intense listening. The materials of the viola and the saxophone cross, criss-cross, detach, move away and come closer as in a game of chase where each movement transforms the landscape, where each variation in the sound of the viola and the saxophone transforms the landscape, where each variation of light modifies the environment in an imperceptible way."-Akousis Records

Cyprien Busolini: After a classical training, Cyprien Busolini turned to contemporary music and improvisation, two poles around which his work revolves. Improvisation allows him to work on other sound fields and to explore his instrument in a more personal way, notably on non-melodic and non-harmonic parameters but more focused on the material of the sound. He is a member of the Dedalus and Onceim ensembles. He also plays with the Fratres ensemble, an early music ensemble (baroque- classical) on early instruments.

Bertrand Gauguet is a French musician based in Paris. He plays the alto saxophone in solo or collective contexts of improvisation of new music. Also a composer of electronic music, he has produced many original pieces and soundtracks for dance, cinema and radio. He also makes field recordings for radio broadcasts, films and live performance devices. His interests explore the interplay of frequencies and their refraction, multiphony, sounds at the thresholds of audibility, breath and more broadly sound as a medium for meditation. His discography to date includes some twenty albums published by European labels. He was laureate of the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto in 2011. Collaborations with Sophie Agnel, Tetuzi Akiyama, Pascal Battus, Mike Bullock, Cyprien Busolini, Xavier Charles, Michel Doneda, Isabelle Duthoit, Ensemble Un, Grands Lacs, Andy Guhl, Franz Hautzinger, Robin Hayward, Insub Meta Orchestra, Thomas Korber, Eric La Casa, Thomas Lehn, Toshimaru Nakamura, Eddie Prevost, Carol Robinson, Tetsu Saïtoh, John Tilbury. Composers : Éliane Radigue, Kasper T. Toeplitz. Film Makers : Christian Barani, Anne Durez, Christian Merlhiot. Choreographers : Catherine Contour, Sophiatou Kossoko, Sidonie Rochon.
