Tenor Saxophonist Nisse Sandstrom, who's album The Painter earned accolades in 1972, looks forward and backwards at the rich jazz history of our contemporaries as he releases a new live album with a modern lineup of Jonas Kullhammar on tenor saxophone, drummer Moussa Fadera, bassist Kenji Rabson and pianist Leo Lindberg.
The material is a self-composed brew of 60s hard bop sweetened with a little calypso, soul, jazz and blues, with songs dedicated to musicians like Hank Mobley, Al Cohn, Georgie Fame and others. The album was captured live at Crescendo in Norrkšping in May 2014. Contagiously upbeat and lyrical, the melodies flow in traditional jazz formats, interspersed with solos showing the stylistic differences between tenor saxophonists of two different eras. A great lyrical album uniting two generations and reminding us of the great traditions that fuel modern creative jazz.
