The fourth piano trio release from veteran UK pianist and composer Tim Richards, joined by bassist Alex Keen and drummer Daniel Howard, drawing on the deep traditions of McCoy Tyner and Thelonious Monk while embracing calypso, Brazilian rhythm and soul-jazz colour, the trio's years of residency shaping fluid interplay, melodic clarity and an unforced balance between swing, lyricism and joyful invention.

Tim Richards' music is something I've admired since his days with the pioneering UK jazz quartet Spirit Level and his later nine-piece Great Spirit. I've continued to follow his playing with a variety of different line-ups, including his six-piece group, The Hextet, and various editions of his long-running trio.
Four Aces, his fourth release in the piano trio format, features a new line-up with the lyrical bass of Alex Keen and the expressive drumming of Daniel Howard. The fresh sound of the trio positively leaps out of the speakers, presenting five impressive Richards originals along with a well-selected and interesting selection of tunes by leading jazz composers, many of them fellow pianists.
Of the original pieces, Four Aces exhibits the influence of two of Richards' favourite pianist-composers, McCoy Tyner and Thelonious Monk, while "Metaphysics" features Keen playing the melody on bass and highlights the trio's impressive musical rapport. The joyous "Pandeiro" reflects Richards' love for Brazilian music and includes a feature for drummer Howard. "No Blues" includes the jaunty calypso "Island Hopping." The album concludes with the funky "New Cross Blues," a catchy soul-jazz head written during the trio's residency at the Old Library Bar in New Cross.
Four Aces maintains the high standards that we have come to expect from Richards. The music embraces a variety of jazz styles and sounds as fresh and exciting as ever, combining intelligent writing and arranging with superlative playing from all three participants.

I first met drummer Daniel Howard during lockdown in 2022, when he set up his kit in the street to play outside his front door. After jamming together we invited bassist Alex Keen to join us for a gig at the Ethno Jazz Festival in Folkestone in October 2022, and a new line-up for the trio was born.
Shortly afterwards we were invited to play a monthly Sunday afternoon residency at the Old Library Bar in New Cross Road, London (www.musicroomlondon.com), which we've continued for the last three years. This album is the culmination of all that playing. I hope you enjoy it!

Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Tim Richards "London-based pianist Tim Richards has been a presence on the UK and international jazz scene since the early 1980s. Tim's first encounter with a piano was at the age of 8 in a dentist's waiting room. After classical piano lessons he began to teach himself jazz and blues from the age of 14, when he saw Thelonious Monk and Otis Spann on TV. In 1979 he formed the seminal modern jazz group SPIRIT LEVEL, a band that toured the Britain and Europe extensively in the 1980s and 90s, released seven albums, and was nominated 'Best Small group' in the 1995 British Jazz Awards. In recent years, Tim has won acclaim as a composer and arranger, developing ideas in the larger instrumental setting of his nine-piece band GREAT SPIRIT, which has featured key players on the British scene such as Pete King, Dick Pearce, Ed Jones, Gilad Atzmon, Denys Baptiste, Tony Kofi, Jason Yarde, Roger Beaujolais, Seb Rochford and many others. The band released their second CD Epistrophy (33Jazz120) in 2005 (5-star online review) and toured the UK for the fourth time in November 2006 with Finnish saxophonist Jari Perkiomaki, with the help of a New Music award from the PRS Foundation. Tim has a Masters Degree in composition from London's Trinity College of Music, and has also written pieces for a wide variety of non-jazz ensembles, including pieces for solo piano, piano duet, string quartet, recorder quintet, toy pianos and piano trio (with violin and cello). His lyrical tone, rhythmic assurance and sensitivity to ensemble colour have made him a valued collaborator across a wide range of settings, from modern jazz groups to theatre and chamber-jazz projects. Keen has performed and recorded with artists including Julian Siegel, Nikki Iles, and the late Bobby Wellins, and he has appeared at major UK venues and festivals. Alongside performing, he contributes as an educator and composer, continuing to explore the expressive potential of the acoustic bass in contemporary contexts. ^ Hide Bio for Alex Keen • Show Bio for Daniel Howard A London-based drummer and percussionist, Daniel Howard combines an expressive touch with a deep sense of groove and texture. Equally at home in jazz, improvised and cross-cultural settings, he has worked with a variety of ensembles across the UK, known for his dynamic range and keen responsiveness to fellow players. During the 2020 lockdown he gained attention for his inventive street-side solo performances, leading to new collaborations that shaped the current Tim Richards Trio. His playing draws on both modern jazz and global rhythmic traditions, emphasizing interaction, clarity and creative balance within the ensemble. ^ Hide Bio for Daniel Howard
