Music from the SYNTHI #2

Machida, Yoshio: Music from the SYNTHI #2 (Amorfon)

A purely electric album by Yoshio Machida recorded in 2023, made entirely with the EMS Synthi AKS; with its patch-matrix routing, built-in 256-step sequencer, spring reverb, three oscillators and analog coloration, Machida improvises tempo and phrasing as if in conversation with a string quartet, layering organic, nostalgic, chamber-like textures entirely without outboard gear.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"A purely electric album made using only EMS SYNTHI AKS, a rare 70s synth used by B. Eno, Pink Floyd, Aphex Twin, Thom Yorke, Jean-Marc Foussat, etc. This is a sequel to Music from the SYNTHI released in 2014 by French label Baskaru, and Music from the SYNTHI 100 released in 2017.

Featuring the unique method of using the Synthi, the tempo of the built-in sequencer is improvised, and phrases are played as if singing a string quartet, and multi-recorded without any outboards. Electric chamber music with the organic sound of an analog synth and the nostalgic sound of the built-in spring reverb."-Amorfon

The EMS Synthi AKS, introduced in 1972 by Electronic Music Studios in the UK, is a portable analog modular synthesizer that quickly became iconic for its unusual design and sound. Building on the Synthi A, it added a touch-plate keyboard and a built-in 256-step sequencer housed in the lid, giving performers an immediate way to control tempo and phrasing. Instead of patch cables, the Synthi uses a distinctive pin-matrix routing system, allowing highly flexible and experimental connections between modules. With three oscillators, a noise generator, ring modulator, envelope shapers, a low-pass filter, and its unique spring reverb and joystick controller, the Synthi AKS offers a wide spectrum of sonic possibilities. Its slightly unstable tuning and tactile interface contribute to its reputation for warmth, unpredictability, and organic character, making it a favourite of artists seeking both control and chance in their electronic music.

Artist Biographies

"Yoshio Machida (町田 良夫 Yoshio Machida?, born 1967 in Japan) is an experimental musician, a steelpanist, composer, and visual artist.

A member of ASCAP, Machida studied minimal art, music and film at the Tama Art University under Kuniharu Akiyama, Yoshiaki Touno, Sakumi Hagiwara and Kishio Suga. In the 1990s, Machida worked for an international cooperation in Asia and Africa.

Machida's first album Hypernatural (1999) had been featured with Brian Eno and Oval (band) on David Toop's article about Generative music. In 2001, Machida started to play improvised music by Steelpan with computer program Max/MSP. Machida has been invited to perform in ISEA2004, Sónar Tokyo, MaerzMusik and other venues. In 2004, Machida founded an experimental music label Amorfon. In 2007, Machida formed an electric Dub band miimo with tatsu and Norihide Saji. Machida also organized "Japan-Macedonia exchange art exhibition" and some workshops for children.

As a visual artist, Machida has produced Photobatik like Photogram technique using photographic paper. Photograms are produced by partial exposure and development of the entire photosensitive surface. Photobatik is "whole exposure and partial development." Machida has expanded his technique to overexposure of the photographic paper followed by only fixing the image, resulting in a pink image."
