Artist Biographies

"Josten Myburgh: Perth-based musician, influenced (mostly) by early music, fluxus, footwork, hip-hop, Wandelweiser, free improvisation and folk music, and interested (broadly) in gentleness, silence, repetition, counterpoint, juxtaposition and nonsense.

I work for Tura New Music as a curator of their 'grassroots' concert and workshop programs, centred around experimental chamber music and free improvisation.

I am part of running the label Tone List, which represents some exploratory music activities in Perth through releasing records and organising concerts.

I've studied with Antoine Beuger, Lindsay Vickery (WAAPA), Stuart James (WAAPA), and also undertaken mentorships and emerging artist programs with Alessandro Bosetti, Perluigi Billone, James Ledger and Richard Barrett.

I've performed at Klangraum (Düsseldorf), AudioArt Festival (Krakow), Cable#8 (Nantes), 101 Scelsi/Cage Festival (Palermo), Tilde New Music & Sound Art (Melbourne) and the Totally Huge New Music Festival (Perth).Music I've made is out on Edition Wandelweiser, Flaming Pines, Tone List, Ivory Tower Records.

I'm currently a PhD candidate at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and also teach there as a sessional lecturer. My research surrounds the intersections of radical philosophies of hope and experimental music communities.

I play composed music with Jameson Feakes and with the ensemble Breaking Waves. I also play free improvisation, usually with Michael McNab (Tchake), Emilio Gordoa, Sage Pbbbt, and eszetts. My solo performances often incorporate a mixture of composed laptop electronics, improvisation, voice, objects and 'non-musical' elements."

He has been selected for collaborative programs with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Flinders Quartet (VIC), and the Australian Youth Orchestra, plus a composition residency at All That We Are (TAS). His work Dawn Prelude premiered in Boston, USA in 2019 and was performed by the Brisbane-based Concept Ensemble earlier this year. Chong's latest commission Paraphrasis was recently premiered by the esteemed Irwin Street historical music ensemble, performed by Shaun Lee-Chen, Catherine Jones and Cecilia Sun.

As a percussionist, Chong has performed with Nigel Westlake, Joseph Tawadros and Lior, and abroad with Jan Lisiecki (Canada/Poland), Aiyun Huang (Canada) and Emmanuel Séjourné (France). He held the Principal Percussion position in the 2019 Australian Youth Orchestra International Tour (Europe/China), and the Momentum Chamber Ensemble performances across the country. He has recorded with the Australian Baroque, and been heard on ABC Classic. Chong won the 2017 Malaysia Percussion Festival Performance Prize with his own work Rev 3, and is a two-time winner of the People's Choice Award for the Vose Memorial Concerto Prize.

Chong studied composition principally under James Ledger and percussion under Louise Devenish, Brian Maloney, and François Combemorel at the University of Western Australia. He graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor of Philosophy in Mathematics and Statistics, and Music Specialist Studies (Composition/Percussion), with First Class Honours. His thesis 'Predicting Marimba Stickings with Neural Networks' has led to ongoing work under Dr. Débora Correa alongside other concurrent research.

One may also find Chong performing at events and festivals around the state with Taiko On (Perth's leading Japanese drumming group) or as bodhran player in his Irish band The Fiddlesticks."
