"New album from Barcelona-based percussionist Vasco Trilla, featuring solo work alongside collaborations with three Swedish improvisers: Martin Kuchen, Vilhelm Bromander, and Alex Zethson.
With Up North, Vasco Trilla presents a recording shaped by encounter, environment, and attentive risk-taking. Moving between concentrated solo exploration and deeply responsive interplay with Martin Kuchen, Vilhelm Bromander, and Alex Zethson, the album unfolds as a study in texture, tension, and transformation - where sound is stretched, fractured, and reassembled in real time, revealing a music that is both searching and resolute. In spring 2024, Trilla was invited by musician and Thanatosis label founder Alex Zethson to perform a solo concert at St Paulskyrkan in Stockholm. The former church - now home to an ambitious cultural program alongside significant community work under the name of Motesplats Mariatroget- offers rich acoustics perfectly suited to Trilla's vast sound palette and multilayered approach. The concert was recorded and appears as the album's final track.
Preceding this live solo performance are three extended studio improvisations recorded by Gustaf Lindelow in a nearby studio. The pieces are based on open musical directions provided by Zethson. The first is a captivating drone duo with bassist Vilhelm Bromander (Aurora, Unfolding Orchestra), grounded in low-frequency resonance before gradually dissolving into woody, more transparent textures. The second track is a haunting trio in which Trilla's intricate percussive textures and multiple metronomes meet the uncannily lyrical interplay of long-time collaborators Martin Kuchen (sopranino saxophone) and Alex Zethson (harpsichord). The third piece, spanning almost 19 minutes, unfolds as a constantly shifting yet continuous landscape of wave-like motion. Bass and percussion create a tense, elastic field - Bromander's high-pitched, tingling sounds suggesting material stretched almost to breaking point. The music gradually transforms into an almost industrial sound mass, eventually narrowing into a duo between Kuchen and Trilla: an intuitive exchange that begins with expressive sopranino outbursts and concludes in passages where the two instruments seem to fuse into a complex, distorted hybrid"-Creative Sources

• Show Bio for Vasco Trilla "Born in Barcelona, Vasco Trilla started playing drums at the age of nineteen. His first influences were progressive rock and metal, but gradually he developed an interest in a variety of different genres such as jazz, Indian music, African music, klezmer, free improvisation, etc. Since then he has collaborated, toured and recorded with many different bands and projects such as Boi Akih (an ethno-jazz band from the Netherlands), Planeta Imaginario (progressive jazz-rock) October Equus (avant-rock), The Oddvisers (pop-avant), Fine! (indie pop-rock), Mundo Flotante (ethno-jazz-rock), Kaulakau/Cobla Sant Jordi (an ethno-jazz Catalan orchestra), Filthy Habits Ensemble (a jazz octet playing Zappa's and Stravinsky's repertoire), Cows On Trees (a jazz-improv quartet with Susana Santos Silva and Kaja Draksler), Balimonster (an impro-ethno duo with Angel Ontalva), Yedo Gibson-Vasco Trilla duo (an improv sax & drums duo), Outerzone (jazz-core), Reptilian Mambo (mambo free rock), Liba's Traum, etc. In the last years he has been playing and experimenting on the free-improv scene, applying extended techniques to the kit and treating it as a textural-melodic instrument.
