Recorded at Marmalade, in in Chicago, Illinois, from 2023-2025, by Ishmael Ali.
"Cello dynamo Ishmael Ali's debut solo album, Burn the Plastic, Sell the Copper features a remarkable crew of distinguished Chicagoans in various configurations in addition to solo performances interspersed throughout. The record on the whole highlights a wide array of Ali's unique language and propensity for collaboration, taking the listener through an eclectic but cohesive mix of music. Raw solo cello explorations, intimate duo improvisations, interactive electronics, rhythmic grooves, and singable (and sung!) melodies populate the record like characters whose voices interact, whose stories unfold over time.
The record's title originally came from a passing comment that Ali's friend made about some old, faulty XLR cables laying on the studio floor. "Burn the Plastic, Sell the Copper," she said. "The phrase," Ali says, "kind of stuck with me. I've been trying to finish a solo record for a long time and have a lot of music in a lot of different conceptual worlds." Eventually, he says, he realized that it was ok to burn some and keep the elemental threads running through it all.
And of course, the phrase rings with a sardonic commentary on capitalist mentality, which is not lost on Ishmael Ali in all of his embracing of a kind of trickster spirit. But there is a resounding tenderness that props up this set as well. On "Stars in My Pocket," Ali sings plaintively but soulfully over a skittering groove. It is avant garde, yes, but it is loving and generous. "Everness" reflects on memory and its sometimes tragic deterioration -- recontextualizing the words of Jorge Luis Borges.
The multi-generational crew of Ed Wilkerson Jr., Jim Baker, Corey Wilkes, Bill Harris, and Brianna Tong and Ishmael Ali, appear on a wild and wide-ranging assortment of compositions and improvisations; they interact playfully and shift skillfully through diverse modalities over the course of the 10 track album. The music here is experimental but memorable, verging at times on a strange form of pop. It never sounds like Arthur Russell but it sounds like something he might have been charmed by -- while at other times there are echoes of the Art Ensemble of Chicago or Kahil El Zabar's Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, a group that in fact counts Ali among its numbers and which has deeply influence Ali's playing and composing."-Amalagam

• Show Bio for Ishmael Ali "Ishmael Ali is a first generation Filipino-Arab-American cellist, guitarist, improviser, composer, and electronic artist currently residing in Chicago. His work centers on exploring sound through improvisation, experimentation, collaboration, as well as a wide array of idiomatic approaches in an ever-changing, always-growing list of projects with diverse focuses and influences.Though varying drastically from group to group, a common thread in his work is the juxtaposition of seemingly disparate elements to create something new: both foreign and familiar. In addition to performing, Mr. Ali is a co-founder and audio engineer at the recording space Marmalade in Chicago and was the founder and director of the now inoperative music and art space, Orotund Music. He continues to work as an organizer and promoter through the music series OBTC." ^ Hide Bio for Ishmael Ali • Show Bio for Corey Wilkes "Corey Wilkes has established himself as one of the best improvising trumpeters in the modern era. Having the skill and maturity to approach mainstream repertoire of jazz standards with his own unique sensibilities, he combines them with his deep appreciation of hip-hop. Corey continues to bring his brand of musicianship and talent to the forefront of the genre. As a child, growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, Wilkes was surrounded by the sounds of Blues, R&B, Soul, Funk and Jazz. He picked up the trumpet for the first time at the age of 10 participating in his school band programs. Corey's natural talent immediately began to flourish. His confidence and maturity were well beyond his years. As a student at Rich South High School in Richton Park, Illinois, his hard work and dedication secured him a spot in the Illinois All State Honors Jazz Combo; the first student in the school's history to do so. Corey has also shared the stage with numerous Jazz Masters including but not limited to; Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, James Moody, Kurt Elling, Von Freeman, Greg Osby, Roscoe Mitchell, Marcus Belgrave, Clark Terry, Harry "Sweets" Edison and Mulgrew Miller. His soulful notes can be heard gracing a variety of contemporary projects including sets by DJ Logic, Osunlade and Josh Deep; tracks on Hidden Beach Recordings Presents: Unwrapped Vol. 4, Kahil El Zabar's Ascension Loft Series as well as Nona Hendryx, Soulive, Meshell Ndegocello and Ledisi." ^ Hide Bio for Corey Wilkes • Show Bio for Jim Baker "Jim Baker was born in Chicago a number of years ago and has been playing in and around Chicago and elsewhere in the world for a few decades, mostly on piano and analog synthesizer; mostly in improvisational contexts; in situations involving, amongst others, Fred Anderson, Ken Vandermark, Michael Zerang, Mars Williams, Brian Sandstrom, Steve Hunt, Edward WIlkerson Jr, David Boykin, Rob Mazurek, Guillermo Gregorio, Nicole Mitchell, Vincent Davis, the Thing XXL, Tortoise, Dave Rempis, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Paul Hartsaw, Janet Bean, Damon Short, and numerous others.
