Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Jan Maksimowicz "Saxophonist, composer, group leader and pedagogue Jan Maksimowicz is one of the most exciting Lithuanian jazzmen of young generation. He has stepped on the jazz scene in 1996 and made his debut as a composer and leader of his quintet in 2002. Subsequently he has presented intriguing programmes with his trio, quartet and group Riot in all major jazz festivals in Lithuania. In his projects the saxophonist also employs electronics, likes experimenting with musicians of younger generation, partakes in unorthodox formations and collaborates with academic musicians. Recently, he has focused on playing in Leonid Shinkarenko's quartet Jazz 4 N. Maksimowicz has collaborated with many a Lithuanian jazz celebrity including Petras Vyšniauskas, Vytautas Labutis, Vladimir Chekasin, Dainius Pulauskas, Olegas Molokojedovas, Liudas Mockūnas, Arkady Gotesman, Vytis Nivinskas and Marijus Aleksa to name but a few. He took part in a number of international projects including Baltic Asteroids and Anatoly Vapirov's Mirror of Memory, teamed-up with Swiss trio Vein, Tim Daisy, Byron Wallen, Jaroslaw Bester, Grazyna Auguscik and the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra. The musician has toured in Moldova, Finland, Greece, the USA, Switzerland and Sweden. Maksimowicz serves as a lector at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre." ^ Hide Bio for Jan Maksimowicz • Show Bio for Dmitrij Golovanov "Dmitrij Golovanov (born 1983) is one of the most captivating and prolific jazz pianists, composers and teachers in Lithuania. With his skill at handling the grand piano, keyboard instruments and computers, and being well acquainted with the history of jazz, he creates a singular style, from jazz classics to distinctive creative and experimental electronic music. A versatile musician, Golovanov moves freely between genres and projects, but he is most interested in performing original compositions, which show him to be both a contemplative and a witty artist. The pianist's debut on the jazz scene was at the age of only 12. At the age of 17, and while still at school, he performed to great critical acclaim at the international festival Vilnius Jazz with the band Jazz Pictures, made up of his contemporaries, which became the youngest band in the history of the festival. Since then, Golovanov's career has been steadily progressing. A graduate of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, he is currently studying at Leipzig's F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music and Theatre. His discography comprises over ten albums, in four of which he features as a leader or a co-leader. In 2014, he released the solo CD ME. The pianist plays solo and with various groups, including the free jazz trio Infiltrators, the Veronika ChiChi Quartet (with his singer wife), and the international quartet Tree Stones, which brought together jazz artists from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. He also collaborates with the improvisation theatre Kitas kampas (Another Angle). Golovanov has performed with various collectives at festivals such as the London Jazz Festival, Pori Jazz, Jazz Jamboree, Leipzig Jazz Tage, Brugge Jazz and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, and he has participated as a solo jazz artist in the Montreux Solo Jazz Piano Competition (semi-finals) and the European Jazz Competition (finals)." ^ Hide Bio for Dmitrij Golovanov
