Descriptions, Reviews, &c.
The AMPLIFY 2002: balance box set is designed by Erstwhile to try to recreate (as much as possible) the experience of what it was like to be in Tokyo in late October 2002, witnessing this incredible week of music.
Over 7 hours of music on 7 CDs including 8 of the 12 sets from the festival itself.
Two discs compiled from smaller club shows which took place before and after the festival itself, including an entire disc by the all-star guitar septet of Keith Rowe, Tetuzi Akiyama, Oren Ambarchi, Toshimaru Nakamura, Otomo Yoshihide, Burkhard Stangl and Taku Sugimoto. Another disc is a new studio recording by Günter Müller and Toshimaru Nakamura, recorded that same week.
The box will also feature a DVD by filmmaker Jonas Leddington and a 52 page, full-color booklet with photos by Yuko Zama and twenty separate essays by many of the people involved in the festival.
Leddington's DVD, balance beams, is a 109-minute visual document built around the festival itself, including excerpts from all twelve sets, commentary from the musicians, behind-the-scenes footage and images and sounds from around Tokyo. The DVD also includes 5.1 surround sound audio-only versions of the Rowe/Lehn/Schmickler and Müller/Otomo sets, as well as three short individual features based on the three nights during the festival, including Keith Rowe discussing with the other guitarists how he believes a musician should approach performing the graphic score of Cornelius Cardew's Treatise.
The box set is a limited edition of 800 copies, and will not be reprinted. Orders will be shipped shortly after the November 1 release date.
