Shiraishi, Tamio: Sora (Relative Pitch)

Japanese saxophonist living in NYC Tamio Shiraishi, an associate of Keiji Haino, has a unique approach to his solo work, often playing outdoors in concert with nature, or using the natural resonance of his performance space, recreating the sounds of wind, birds, water, and any other natural "noise" sounds, here in a live performance at Issue Project Room & 6 studio recordings.

Artist Biographies:

"Shiraishi Tamio is a sax player. He was born in Japan, and now he lives in N.Y. He has taken part in various avant-garde movernents in japan. For example he took part in 1st generation of "Hushitusya ", organaized by Keiji Haino.

Also he took part in conspiration "Night of heavenly enema" , historical Japanese avant-garde album. Also he plays in many japanese avant-garde groups, for example Tako, Jagatara..

He often plays sax in outdoor situations in the city. He has performanced sax inprovisation act in N.Y, Berlin, and in Tokyo.

His sax improvisation is quite different from jazz or ordinary "free" musical performance. His playing is not so loud as like as ordinary avant-gard playing. His playing is rather similar to sound of wind, water, and any other natural "noise" sounds."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Tamio Shiraishi is, along with Keiji Haino, a founding member of the Japanese avant garde group Fushitsusha in the 1970s. His involvement with Fushitsusha was however transient and the experience and connections formed through it led him to choose the saxophone as his main instrument."

"Shiraishi is a unique performer who combines intense avant-garde alto sax playing with traditional Japanese singing. His work is frenetic and relentless...stunned even the jaded."
