"The process of composing music, generally, is autocratic: "This is what I want; play these notes." But the burgeoning free improvisation scene has put the emphasis on "distributed creativity." Each member of an ensemble composes her/his own part, in real time.
In jazz improvisation, musicians know the melodies, harmonies and rhythms in advance and use them as the basis of the performance, but free improvisers engage in a process of discovery; they feel their way, exploring sounds and textures by real-time experimentation.
The four musicians who created the two extended tracks on Carved Water have left instrumental virtuosity behind. Instead, they engage something like what the late Pauline Oliveros termed "Deep Listening." Each musician uses his listening sensitivity to meld with or differentiate from the others, to increase or decrease dynamics and densities, to make textures smooth or coarse, to extend tones or create rhythmic or arrhythmic patterns.
The music was created for the Sound Art exhibition "On the Edge of Perceptibility" in Budapest. Thanos Chrysakis (laptop, live electronics), Christian Kobi (soprano saxophone), Christian Skjodt (objects, live electronics) and Zsolt Sores (five-string viola, contact mic, tools) weave ever-changing complexities that are mysterious and ineffable. Drama yields to quiescence and reverses. Sources of sounds are inscrutable. Whispers, scrapes, rumbles, clicks, drones, screeches, taps, clouds of noise - all this draws the listener in. "Thanos Chrysakis' output consists of composition, performance, and installation. He was born in Athens in 1971. After residing in the UK between 1998-2014 he moved in 2015 to Belarus. His formal training encompasses percussion (Dimitris Tzafestas), Sonic Arts (Hugh Davies) at the Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts and a PhD in composition from Goldsmiths, University of London (EMS/Michael Young) as well as private studies in orchestration with Dmitri Smirnov. However it is the yearning of the creative praxis itself that transmitted the crucial aspect of artistic practice: that something has to be staked, that something must be ventured.
His work was amongst the selected works at the 32nd International Competition de Musique et d'Art Sonore Electroacoustiques de Bourges 2005, in the category œuvre d'art sonore électroacoustique, while received an honorary mention in 2006 at the 7th International Electroacoustic Composition Competition Musica Viva in Lisbon (the jury was constituted by Morton Subotnick (USA), François Bayle (France), and Miguel Azguime (Portugal).

"Christian Skjødt (b.1980) is a Danish artist who explores the material and aesthetic interrelations between sound, bodies and memory. His installation works deal with the imperceptible. Working site-specific Skjødt sets up autonomous systems out of which immersive and often performative environments emerge. He compiles installations with a laboratory approach in which technical and physical experiments play a central role. Working with sound as primary materiality Skjødts art in many ways bypasses the intellect and 'speaks' directly to the body, reminding us of the direct link between the body, thinking and reality.
The visuals are often minimalist, investigating individual audio-technical principles that 'investigate themselves' and the space they are in. His work is based on the physicist's approach of allowing objects and materials to be what they are. But at the same time Skjødt creates spaces where it is impossible to stand at a distance as a viewer - many of the works function interactively and reactively forcing us to relate to place and time. His works can be seen as witnesses to what we are unable to perceive and the boundary between our sensory apparatus and the materiality of the world.
Besides his solo career he has taken part in numerous collaborations, working interdisciplinary in the fields of composition, installation, theatre, dance and performance. He is also the founder and curator of the vinyl imprint Tonometer, objectifying exploratory sounds and music.

"Born 1969 in Budapest Zsolt S?rés Ahad is an improvised/electroacoustic and noise musician, sound artist, editor, performance and conceptual artist. Currently he is the main organizer of the underground film screening series called Invisible Films' Club at the Ludwig Museum in Budapest. He is the artistic director of Relative (Cross)Hearings International Indpendent Contemporary Music Meeting in Budapest. In 2005 he was the series editor of the Szünetjel Könyvek (Pause Sign Books), and published the Hungarian versions of the following books: Jozef Cseres: Musical Simulacrums (Hudobné simulakrá); Michael Nyman: Experimental Music. Cage and Beyond; Edwin Prévost: No Sound is Innocent. AMM and the Practice of Self-Invention. Meta-Musical Narratives. Essays. In 2008 he edited one of his last book and wrote a preface study about New Chances of Autonomy with the texts by Peter Lamborn Wilson aka Hakim Bey among other onthological anarchists. He is an author of two books with the collection of his poetry. Since 2009 he is collaborating with the cult horror/underground/surreal film director Andrey Iskanov from Khabarovsk, Russian Far-East.
