"The Variable Geometry Orchestra is a large electroacoustic ensemble with a fluid, international membership spanning three generations. For this release, recorded in November 2015 at St. George's Church in Lisbon, Portugal, the group was made up of forty-six members. The thirty-one minute performance was conducted by VGO leader Ernesto Rodrigues.
Maneuvering a heterogeneous ensemble of this size in a way that maintains cohesion, a sense of movement and textural variety without undue clutter is a significant challenge. Rodrigues succeeds on these counts-helped in no small part by the accomplished improvisers he conducts-and the result is an integrated performance that nevertheless is constantly in flux.
The theory behind the ensemble's process seems to be to improvise an overall architecture by arranging complexes of sounds moving in relation to each other. In practice this means modulating the dynamics and density of the background to allow different instruments or instrumental combinations to shift to the foreground. One may, for example, hear reeds skittering over the top of quiet chords underscored by a rich foundation of low strings; pizzicato double basses and guitars outlining the upper and lower boundaries of the ensemble's aggregate compass; or brass exclamations over a simmering and thickening bed of soft-edged timbres. Working mainly in the field of improvisation and structured sound, Adam has toured Europe, the US and Japan, performing solo concerts, in duo with dancer Akemi Nagao, the orchestras Toggle, Jitter, Angel, Flamingo as well as with musicians such as Pat Thomas, Mark Sanders, Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, Yasuhiro Yoshigaki and Michiyo Yagi. "After establishing his name during the Eighties as an electric bass guitarist in alternative rock bands, like the now legendary K4 Quadrado Azul, Hernani Faustino turned to avant-jazz and free improvised music and chose the double bass as his self-taught instrument. Two decades later of multiple interactions with Portuguese and international musicians, he's now considered one of the most intense and solid bassists in the Portuguese scene. The association he maintains with drummer Gabriel Ferrandini (RED trio, Nobuyasu Furuya Trio & Quintet, Rodrigo Amado Wire Quartet) has been pointed as a dynamic and powerful rhythm section. His visceral playing is well showed by the contortions of his face during a performance: he goes to the limits of pleasure and pain.
Music is his life: besides being a musician, he was one of the members of the label Clean Feed, considered one of the five more important on the planet in what regards jazz, and the Trem Azul Jazz Store, located in Lisbon. He also composed for theatre, produced radio programs, and wrote about music in a couple of magazines. A good part of his activity in photography is also music oriented: Faustino is one of the most accomplished stage photographers around. This says all about his passion and commitment.

"Saxophonist, renowned for his vigorous sound, melodic and abrupt phrasing, and great versatility in terms of musical styles, collaborates in numerous projects of the most diverse nature, from the most classic to the most contemporary and risky jazz, even in some of them closer to pop National or song author.
He began his musical training at the age of six with the violin as his main instrument. A few years later, by the hand of Professor Alfons Carrascosa, will change this by the tenor sax. After years of classical training at the Music School of Igualada and many others in modern music schools in Barcelona, he continues his formative career at the Catalan School of Music where he receives classes from Eladio Reinon, Xavi Figarola, Dani Pérez, Agustí Fernández among others. He also moved to The Hague (Holland) to study for a year at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague with John Ruocco, graduating finally in 2007. During these years he also receives advice from Tony Malaby, Ellery Eskelin, Bill Mchenry, Perico Sambeat ..

"Luis first picked up a trumpet when he decided to participate in a Philarmonic Association. Later he had private classes with Tomás Pimentel.He attended the Escola de Jazz Luís Villas Boas/ Hot Club de Portugal, where he had the chance to study with João Moreira, Tomás Pimentel, Vasco Mendonça, Afonso Pais, Filipe Melo, Bruno Santos e André Fernandes. During these years, he also participated in workshop with musicians such as Evan Parker, Chris Speed, Mário Laginha, David Binney, Jesse Davis, Julian Arguelles, Ohad Talmor, André Fernandes, Pedro Madaleno e Phil Grenadier.
He already played in dozens of venues and festivals in Portugal and across Europe.
