sample the album:
"The opening moments of "Stream of Consciousness"are disorienting. Awash in reverb, as in an empty warehouse or a bounded public square, Maria Radich's vocals mingle with those of an audience of unknown size. Camera shutters click, men cough into their sleeves, children test their own small voices against Radich's echoes. It's unclear: has the performance begun? But soon other instruments can be heard, a few at a time, the texture thickening as the 26-strong band materializes. Lulu auf dem Berg ("Lulu on the mountain"-a clever allusion to Alban Berg's unfinished opera) is the third release from Ernesto Rodrigues' Variable Geometry Orchestra. Membership is variable, too: the group can swell to as many as 40 musicians, and always features some familiar names from the Portugal scene. Here we find Miguel Mira, Hernani Faustino, and Sei Miguel, among others. Free improvisation is tricky with large groups. Perhaps ironically, adopting the minimalist, textural approach of electroacousticimprovisationis often a fruitful strategy. Rodrigues deftly moves his musicians through a droning series of dark, shifting shapes, the variable geometry of a flock of birds, turning on his whim. Over the course of the nearly 50 minute performance, there are a few moments of more "traditional" free improvisation, but the intense reverb in the playing space smears everything, effacing even the attack of each drum hit. It may be due to my recent listening, but the murky start and brooding progression brings to mind the music of Jakob Ullman. Not so much his use of extreme quiet, but the idea of holding music at a distance to elicit a form of strained listening. Attention is sustained not by following a melodic trail or the clash of counterpoint, but instead by pushing to get closer to the details, immersed in the flux of a slow-moving, all-pervasive mass of sound. Rodrigues has used the word "subliminal" in the past when talking about this music. Indeed, a session with Lulu auf dem Bergfeels like something that was slowly absorbed rather than actively engaged. Moody, suspenseful-even cinematic-music. Highly recommended."-Dan Sorrells, The Free Jazz Collective
• Show Bio for Ernesto Rodrigues
"He has been playing the violin for 30 years and in that time has played all genres of music ranging from contemporary music to free jazz and improvised music, live and in the studio.
His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music.
The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements.
Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning.
Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups.
Music for Dance, Cinema, Video and Performance.
Has created the record label Creative Sources Recordings in 1999, which mainly concentrates on releasing experimental and electro-acoustic music."-Creative Sources (http://creativesourcesrec.com/creative_artists.html)

Joao Madeira: "I was born in Lisboa and I've dedicated most of my energy to the doublebass since I was 12. When I went to study at the Conservatório de Lisboa my role model was doublebassist João Panta Nunes, and lately my studies were oriented by Jorge Lee, at Cascais. I have a degree in Musicology, investigation work on Fado's candidature to World Immaterial Heritage by UNESCO, and coordination of the Music Department at INATEL/FNAT. Since 1999 I have a strong activity (studio and performance) in several styles and genres, but improvised music and original composition (whatever the style...) are the places where my musical language riches its higher satisfaction and plenitude. In the recordings you are about to hear it's me who plays all the instruments. My passion is at the simple act of artistic creation. For me, music is all about musicians and genuine expression! It doesn't matter the genre neither the instrument per si. In theater I have collaborations (musician, composer, actor) with Companhia do Chapitô and Artistas Unidos, amongst others. I also love books (...) I've studied aesthetics and Portuguese literature since I remember, and love to read and write poetry."-Reverb Nation (https://www.reverbnation.com/eudemadeira/song/9496502-mejardim-joo-madeira)

• Show Bio for Hernani Faustino
"After establishing his name during the Eighties as an electric bass guitarist in alternative rock bands, like the now legendary K4 Quadrado Azul, Hernani Faustino turned to avant-jazz and free improvised music and chose the double bass as his self-taught instrument. Two decades later of multiple interactions with Portuguese and international musicians, he's now considered one of the most intense and solid bassists in the Portuguese scene. The association he maintains with drummer Gabriel Ferrandini (RED trio, Nobuyasu Furuya Trio & Quintet, Rodrigo Amado Wire Quartet) has been pointed as a dynamic and powerful rhythm section. His visceral playing is well showed by the contortions of his face during a performance: he goes to the limits of pleasure and pain.
Music is his life: besides being a musician, he was one of the members of the label Clean Feed, considered one of the five more important on the planet in what regards jazz, and the Trem Azul Jazz Store, located in Lisbon. He also composed for theatre, produced radio programs, and wrote about music in a couple of magazines. A good part of his activity in photography is also music oriented: Faustino is one of the most accomplished stage photographers around. This says all about his passion and commitment.
Hernani Faustino's numerous meetings and collaborations with other improvisors is astonishing: John Butcher, Lotte Anker, Nate Wooley, Carlos "Zíngaro", Agustí Fernández, Sei Miguel, Rafael Toral, Jason Stein, Nuno Rebelo, Rodrigo Pinheiro, Gabriel Ferrandini, Pedro Sousa, Rodrigo Amado, Albert Cirera, Manuel Mota, Luís Lopes, Jon Irabagon, Taylor Ho Bynum, Gerard Lebik, Piotr Damasiewicz, Harris Eisenstadt, Neil Davidson, Heddy Boubaker, Gerard Lebik, Elliott Levin, Katsura Yamauchi, Mats Gustafsson, Chris Corsano, Nikolaus Gerszewski, Rob Mazurek, Reinhold Friedl, Ernesto Rodrigues, José Oliveira, Helena Espvall, Nuno Torres, Ricardo Jacinto, Blaise Siwula, Virginia Genta, Elliott Levin, Daniel Carter, Federico Ughi, Floros Floridis, Matt Bauder, Dennis González, Vítor Rua, and many more, covering a wide range from free bop to extreme experimentation, going through electroacoustic improv, reductionism and noise."-Hernani Faustino Website, Rui Eduardo Paes (http://www.hernanifaustino.com/bio/)

"Adriana Sá is transdisciplinary artist, performer musician/ composer. Her graphical scores choreograph texture, density, dominance and sequence variations rather than clock-time or note arrangements. Designing and building the instrumentation is part of her creative process. For almost two decades, Sá used sensor technologies to explore music connected to light, space, movement, architecture, weather and social context; her architecturally-scaled instruments combined analogue and digital components. Currently, Adriana develops research about audio-visual instrument design and composition. She has been clarifying artistic insights with the aid of cognition/ attention research, and developing 3D audio-visual software that operates based on pitch detection from a custom zither input.
Adriana Sá has been developing and presenting her work around Europe, USA and Japan since 1997. She has consistently developed a number of project-series dedicated to specific artistic investigations: 'Sensations Laboratories', 'Interchange Formats', 'This Is Just To Do', 'Parallax', 'Metaparallax', 'Portablellax', 'Moment In Movement', 'Thresholds', 'Windowmatter' and 'Emotional Object'. In these and other contexts, she has collaborated with hundreds of artists. Director, arranger and trumpeter, Sei Miguel considers himself a simple jazzman, which, he says, isn't always easy. Born in 1961, Paris, lived in Brazil and France until settling down in Portugal during the 80's. Since 1986 he has been directing formations of variable geometry.
