descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Considering the work done by each one of the musicians forming the band Afterfall, this is the most improbable of all projects. The fact is that it works, and we must say it works beautifully. It could have been an ad-hoc group, reunited at the end of the summer of 2008 for a couple of gigs in Portugal. But things went so well on stage that they decided to go to studio and this is the astonishing result: when you gather some improvisers coming from different parts of the world - in this case, two Portuguese, two Americans and one French - marvelous things can happen.

Luís Lopes was the Master of Ceremonies, more than the leader or the mentor: it was him who invited the rest of the participants, and knowing his past life playing rock and blues, his love for the "new thing" and his passion for noise music (he's the most brutal feedback guitarrist in Portugal - our own Caspar Brotzmann!), the choices he made were surprising. First Sei Miguel, a very idiosincratic trumpeter with a cubist cool style positioned somewhere between Chet Baker and John Cage. Then, Joe Giardullo, a saxophonist specialized on the soprano who applies the George Russell's Lydian Chromatic Theory of Tonal Organization in an experimental jazz format more inspired in Jelly Roll Morton than in Anthony Braxton, and who played with such distinct personalities as the new music composer Pauline Oliveros and the free jazz legend Joe McPhee. After, came Benjamin Duboc, a contrabassist crossing the boundaries of jazz, total improvisation and electro-acoustic music, going from the "conventional" (with Oliver Lake, Henry Grimes, Sunny Murray) to the extreme (with Jean-Luc Guionnet, Bertrand Denzler, Stéphane Rives). Finally, drummer Harvey Sorgen joined in, with his experience in opposite fields, with the likes of Ahmad Jamal and Carlos Santana, Dewey Redman and Paul Simon, Wadada Leo Smith and Michelle Shocked.

This is the proof that the most crazy idea can be the best one."-Clean Feed Records

Artist Biographies:

"Averse to any linearity, the idiosyncratic Luís Lopes, a musician connected to Jazz, improvised and experimental music, has been building his career, a simple and singular story, characterised by a unique voice, free of corsets, formal ties or constraints and mannerisms regarding strict stilistical implications. He is an unfollower... experiments himself through paradoxes. Invokes teachings by following standards of subversion to any possibility of pre-established idea. Eminent self-subversion... Introspective timeless trance.

Running Multi-international groups, especially his Humanization 4tet (with Portuguese Rodrigo Amado and Texan's Aaron and Stefan Gonzalez), Lisbon Berlin Trio (with Germans Christian Lillinger, Robert Landfermann), and his "Noise" or "Love Song(s)" Solos, plus his highly recommended records he is growing as an international artist, playing at important Festivals and venues not just in Portugal but in Europe and U.S.

Coming from a rock/punk and blues background, while studying at local classic and rock schools, he began studying Jazz at Hot Club Portugal School and then was finalist at Escola de Jazz do Barreiro/Lisbon. Then did studies with Saxophonist Joe Giardullo who opened for him the doors of modern jazz harmony complexity through the George Russell's "Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization", plunging Lopes into the world of improvised and experimental music, without disregard for his fascination with distorion and guitar feedbacks, expressed in different incursions into noise music, while also canalizes energys towards projects where he can develop his composing abilities.

In more recent times, Lopes has played and / or recorded with different artists connected to jazz and improvised music, such as Noel Akchoté, Christian Lillinger, Robert Landfermann, Marco Von Orelly, Marc Unternahrer, Adam Lane, Igal Foni, Floros Floridis, Joe Giardulo, Harvey Sorgen, Benjamin Duboc, Phill Niblock, Ernesto Rodrigues, Paulo Curado, Sei Miguel, Rodrigo Amado, Hernâni Faustino, Gabriel Ferrandini, Rodrigo Pinheiro, Miguel Mira, Aaron Gonzalez, Stefan Gonzalez, Dennis Gonzalez, Elliot Levin, Alfred Hart, Daniel Levin, Reuben Radding, Daniel Carter, Jeb Bishop, Josh Abrams, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Samuel Blaser, Boris Hauf, Evan Parker, Olivier Benoit, Fred Lomberg-holm, Valentin Ceccaldi, Gonçalo Almeida, among many others."

"Plays his trumpet with complete awareness of the whole Jazz history while dealing, as a music director, with the full spectrum of sound sources in a broad range of innovative (and often strange) solutions, including frequent use of electronics. He has created his own music system, allowing him to take his open pieces to a high degree of perfection.

Director, arranger and trumpeter, Sei Miguel considers himself a simple jazzman, which, he says, isn't always easy. Born in 1961, Paris, lived in Brazil and France until settling down in Portugal during the 80's. Since 1986 he has been directing formations of variable geometry. Having performed in Portugal, Germany, Italy and Brazil, among his many regular collaborators are not only guitarists Rafael Toral and Manuel Mota, but also extraordinaire trombone player and painter Fala Mariam and virtuoso percussionist César Burago. Miguel has also written music for theater and ballet."

"Benjamin Duboc is a very strong voice on double bass, born 1969, studied with JF Jenny-Clark & Bernard Cazauran, and has played with many great musicians (as Ernest Dawkins, Bertrand Denzler, Roy Campbell, Jean-Luc Cappozzo, Sabir Mateen, Byard Lancaster, Daniel Erdmann, Abdelahaï Bennani, Michel Doneda, Daunik Lazro, Sunny Murray, John Betsch...). And also with Henry Grimes for a great duet in Paris. He leads the "Nuts" quintet with Itaru Oki & Rasul Siddik on trumpets, & Makoto Sato & Didier Lasserre on drums. He plays in "The fish" with Jean-Luc Guionnet on alto sax & Edward Perraud on drums (double cd on Ayler Records) and Rocks in the Sea with Mario Rechtern, Eric Zinman and Didier Lasserre. Benjamin has a beautiful and big sound, you really feel the ground while hearing him... it's somethin' ! He also is recorded on Amor Fati, Futura Marge, Creative sources, le petit label, sansbruit."
