Artist Biographies:

"Turntablist Joke Lanz creates autonomous sound-cells that melt into a language free of any function. He combines ritual reductionism with anarchistic playfulness, atmospheric soundscapes with cut-up noise and physicalness with unpredictability.

Best known for his international acclaimed Noise project 'Sudden Infant', Joke Lanz is presenting his work since 25 years all over the world. Born in Switzerland and currently operating out of Berlin, he is one of the most prolific and profound artists working in the border zones where performance and body art meet Improvisation and Noise.

Joke Lanz has released his works on some of the most prominent record labels in the noise underground i.e. RRR, Schimpfluch, Tochnit Aleph, Blossoming Noise, Entr'acte, Artware, SSSM, Klanggalerie, Some Bizarre, iDeal Rec and performed with the likes of Peter Kowald, Christian Marclay, Rudolf Eb.er, Z'EV, Carlos Giffoni, Daniel Menche, Christian Weber, Charlotte Hug, Christian Wolfarth, Astro, The New Blockaders, GX Jupitter-Larsen and many more."

" is a musician, artist and writer. He was born 1960 in New York and grew up in Los Angeles. He re-located to Europe in 1990 and is currently based in Zürich.

As an electronic musician, vocalist and drummer Kahn collaborates regularly with many musicians, both in improvised settings and in the context of graphical scores which he composes for specific groups.

Kahn has exhibited his installations in museums, galleries, art spaces and public sites internationally. These works focus on the idea of space: the conceptual and physical juncture points, its production and dissolution, and our relation to it as a political, social and environmental medium.

Kahn's other activities include sound pieces for radio, film, dance and theater. He has also designed numerous CD, LP and cassette covers. As a writer, his work has appeared in books, magazines and as liner notes to many audio publications.

Performing regularly around the world, Kahn has given concerts throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia, China, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey and South Africa.

In 2011 Kahn started the Editions imprint to publish his own recordings and writings."

"Norbert Möslang (born October 6, 1952 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss improvisational musician (soprano saxophone, double bass clarinet, live electronics) and violin maker.

Möslang had piano lessons. He then learned autodidactically soprano saxophone and double bass clarinet. From 1972 worked for 30 years with Andy Guhl in a duo; Since 1984 they went on the road as a voice crack. With Erik M and Günter Müller, the duo expanded into the ensemble poire_z.

Möslang increasingly used "cracked" everyday electronics in his improvisations; He intervenes in the circuitry of everyday objects, re-connects them, "cracks their code" as he calls it, and converts them into musical instruments. He also played with Barbetomagus, Jim O'Rourke, Otomo Yoshihide, Keith Rowe, Carlos Zingaro, Irene Schweizer, Kurt Liedwart and Jason Kahn. He also composes film music. For his work on Peter Liechti's documentary The Humours of Insects, he won the Swiss film prize in 2010.

Möslang also works as a photographer."

"Born München, Germany, 1954; drums and electronics. Though born in Germany, Günter Müller has lived in Switzerland since 1966. From 1981 he has been playing a unique drum set with a mobile pick-up and microphone system of his own invention which allows hand-generated sounds on drums and percussion to be modulated electronically. Since 1998 minidiscs, and since 2002 an ipod, have been included in his electronic set. Nowadays he often plays ipod and electronics only.

Müller was a founding member of the trio Nachtluft, with Andres Bosshard and Jacques Widmer, a group that have created sound-installations and sound-architecture, and of the electronic quartet POIRE_Z with Erik M and Voice Crack. He has worked in a wide variety of contexts: solo; in ad-hoc groupings; and often in duo with, among others, Taku Sugimoto, Jason Kahn, Steinbrüchel, Norbert Möslang, Toshimaru Nakamura, Tomas Korber, Lê Quan Ninh, Keith Rowe, Erikm, Carlos Zingaro, Sachiko M, Michel Doneda and Fabrice Charles. Günter Müller runs the record label For 4 Ears.

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"In 2018 Mikroton Mikroten Festival offered a special occasion to record five important musicians from the Swiss experimental music scene. Two tracks of the album were recorded respectively in Kaliningrad and Moscow with no concerts in Kaliningrad and a premiere gig in Moscow. "kangaroo_kitchen" is a masterclass not only in instantaneous sound design and dynamic range, but also in sonic depth. Five musicians work for the first time in such a mesmerizing manner as if they have been working together for years. The weaving in rich and complex meshes of tone clusters and noise loops, Russian radio invasions seamlessly blending with sonic creatures from turntables and skillful double bass playing. A wide array of striking timbres and sounds wash over one another, at times sounding like innards of a factory, at other times like originating from outer limits of space."-Mikroton

"Gentle music is perhaps not the word to use for the next one by Joke Lanz, Jason Kahn, Norbert Möslang, Günter Müller and Christian Weber, all of them also known as Switzerland's best when it comes to improvisation. Duties are divided thusly: Lanz on turntables, Kahn on a modular synthesizer, radio, and mixer, Möslang on cracked everyday electronics, Müller on iPods and electronics and Weber on bass and revolver (and yes, that sounds intriguing). The five of them did a small tour together in September 2018 and brought them to Kaliningrad and Moscow and these two recordings can be found on this double CD. This is some heavyweight music, as all of these musicians are known for their love of all things loud (well, maybe Kahn not so much). I am not sure if we are dealing here with a straight live recording, picked up in the space the music was produced, or if each player was recorded independently and then everything was mixed. Judging by the music, I would think either is possible or, also very likely, the music is a mix of a recording from microphones and lines straight into the mixer. There is an excellent rough tumble in these sounds. Lanz' vinyl skipping is a strong presence, the radio dial is always on the move, slipping in commercial music in an equal amount to radio hiss, whereas the cracked everyday electronics always provide a hotbed of clicks, cuts, crackles and beeps. It is more difficult to guess what Müller and Weber add; only when the proceedings drop in volume you hear the bass and perhaps a whim of field recordings. Dynamic the music certainly is. When it is loud, it is quite loud, but these men know how to control the volume, let it slip back and offer something that is almost subdued. This happens on sparse yet important moments. It prevents this from becoming an all-around noise festival. The first night, in Kaliningrad was a bit extremer in approach than the night in Moscow, which I found a bit more balanced. This double CD shows the depths that these men can go in their game of playing together."-Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly
