"Getting back to my usual daily activities here, although I still have various post-move chores pending, I do want to go ahead and note some thoughts (together in one entry) concerning a couple of new Creative Sources releases: The two programs aren't very related, although cellist Guilherme Rodrigues performs on both: He's continuing to branch out and record in different combos (including without Ernesto), and so I want to note first the intriguing electroacoustic textural explorations of (the generically titled) Fields, recorded in Berlin back in March 2022. For that outing, which can be a little thin or searching in some moments, Rodrigues is joined by a recent fixture in this space, Harri Sjostrom - partly as a followup to the duo album the two recorded in 2018, The Treasures Are - as well as by Lawrence Casserley and Floris Floridis to forge a quartet.

It turns out that I hadn't mentioned Floridis (here on clarinets) before, but Casserley first appeared in this space with the Valid Tractors trio (with Pat Thomas and Dominic Lash) and On the Validity of Tractors (reviewed February 2019), and then most recently with Resonant Voyaging (with Viv Corringham and Martin Hackett, reviewed August 2022): His personal development of a "signal processing instrument" has made him into a unique contributor. And then the textures on Fields are indeed reminiscent of other recent Sjostrom outings, e.g. with Sergio Armaroli, and given the two-horn lineup here, especially their quartet outing with Giancarlo Schiaffini and Veli Kujala (as reviewed December 2022). And obviously I'm finding these explorations around Sjostrom lately to be quite fertile....

With Fields, there're also the explicit electronic manipulations of Casserley, but some similar outcomes, most appealing perhaps when they project a kind of sparkling, twittering jungle vibe... but also leading into layered feels, shearing or bending... an abstract (sometimes metallic...) spaciness. (The twisting, spectral vibe can also evoke e.g. Dense Bushes with Delicate Chirps from Udo Schindler, as reviewed here last month, but there again acoustic and less spacey per se....) There's thus a naturalism, but also a sense of fracture - projecting an underlying sort of mystery or spectrality. And Casserley does continue to be underrecorded."-Todd McComb's Jazz Thoughts

"Was born 1988 in Lisboa, Portugal and started playing cello and trumpet at Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa at the age of 7. In 1999 joined Conservatório Nacional de Música de Lisboa to study classical and music theory and in the current year recorded his first album - Multiples - with Ernesto Rodrigues and José Oliveira out on Creative Sources Recordings.

Apart from work in music ensembles ranging for contemporary classical to free improvisation, also works with live music poetry, theatre and film-music. After lengthy residency in Lisboa, (1988-2016) moved to Berlin and has been active as composer and improviser in the scene.

"Lawrence Casserley (born UK, 1941) has devoted his professional career, as composer, conductor and performer, to real time electroacoustic music. In 1967 he became one of the first students of Electronic Music at the Royal College of Music, London, UK, on the new course taught by Tristram Cary. Later he became Professor-in-Charge of Studios and Adviser for Electroacoustic Music at the RCM, before taking early retirement in 1995.

He is best known for his work in free improvised music, particularly real-time processing of other musicians' sound, and he has devised a special computer processing instrument for this work (picture above). He has worked with many of the finest improvisers, particularly Evan Parker, with whom he works frequently as a duo partner, in various larger groupings and in the Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble. He also works as a soloist, processing sounds from voice, percussion and home-made instruments. CDs have been released by ECM, Konnex, Leo Records, Psi, Sargasso and Touch.

Much of Casserley's work has involved collaboration with other art forms, including poets, eg Bob Cobbing, and visual artists, including Colourscape artist Peter Jones. He is a Director of the Colourscape Music Festivals, presenting contemporary music in the unique environment of the Colourscape walk-in sculpture. He also collaborates with Peter Jones on sound/light installations.

Casserley's "instrumental" approach to live computer sound processing is the hallmark of his work; the Signal Processing Instrument allows him to use physical gestures to control the processing and to direct the morphology of the sounds. This is the culmination of forty years of experience in the performance of live electronic work; his earliest live electronic pieces were performed in 1969, and he has performed many of the live electronic "classics" of the 20th century; he has also collaborated with other composers to realise their electronic performance ideas. He is noted for the breadth and variety of his collaborations, which cross styles and generations."
