Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"With the Sound Of Serendipity Tentet, Lucas Niggli, who has been at the forefront of Swiss-European jazz for many years, brings together some of the most exciting musicians from the local jazz and improvisation scene. Stirring music is created in a highly original playing instruction via 40 composed playing cards, implemented by this ten-member ensemble of strong personalities and the factor of chance.

And so, Play! Is a vehicle to negotiate a spectrum of composed and improvised behaviour in the form of a card game played over three rounds. "On the one hand, we hear a composition which sounds like an expansion of Lucas Niggli's musical character: mercurial, highly detailed, uncannily responsive to others, unafraid of groove. And yet on the other, I suspect that the listener familiar with the individual performers on the recording will smile to themselves at how vibrantly those performers' own individual characteristics are set into relief by Niggli's game".-Intakt

Artist Biographies

"Joana Aderi spent her youth in a remote boarding school in central Switzerland, where she intensively studied Renaissance singing. After graduating from high school, she studied early music at the Academy of Church Music in Lucerne. Then very suddenly the urgent need to make her own music in tune with the times. Hence the move to the University of Jazz, which she ultimately completed in Trondheim, Norway with a master's degree in Performing and Composing Electronic Music. Aderi's main interest lies in the combination of electronic and human sounds and in music between improvisation and song. She has been touring internationally with her solo project EIKO since 2004. EIKO is experimental electronics where Joana uses her voice as raw material for electronic sounds. With her electro-pop band SISSY FOX she plays sweet, danceable songs that have rough edges. The courage to produce imperfectly is important to Joana Aderi. In doing so, it consciously sets an example against the over-designed, high-gloss electronics. She also plays in various bands. For example with PHALL FATALE, a quintet around drummer Fredy Studer, where she is at the front together with singer Joy Frempong (Oy). After many years abroad (Norway and Australia), Joana Aderi has been living in Zurich again since 2016."

"Marina Tantanozi is a flutist and improviser also working in sound art. Born in Thessaloniki Greece, she is based in Basel, Switzerland, after some stops in Berlin, Maastricht and Zürich. She pulls from a wide range of musical influences such as jazz, new music and traditional Middle-Eastern music to compose a sound world where she extends the techniques and expressions of the flutes, combining voice, microtonal textures and electronic processing. Her creative processes focus on the notions of communication and temporality.

She is interested in making music in diverse settings, at the intersection of improvised, experimental, contemporary jazz and new music. Festival and club performances have led her throughout Europe and Russia. She regularly performs as a soloist, as well as with the Insub Meta Orchestra, Bottom Orchestra, Aquaserge, Eden/Loriot/Tantanozi trio, tangent+mek, a.o. and she has performed with the Joyful Noise orchestra, Eve Risser's White Desert Orchestra, Alfred Zimmerlin, Andria Nicodemou, Julian Sartorius, Timothée Quost, Franz Loriot, Lucas Niggli, Martins Berther, Alvaro Rosso and Sebastian Strinning, to name a few.

Passionate about interdisciplinary and collaborative work, she regularly engages in research and works with artists from fields such as dance, theatre and the visual arts. She has an ongoing collaboration with the dancers/choreographers Sonia Ntova and Manel Salas Palau. In 2019 she created the sound installation "the third space", for Unfrozen Education or How to Relearn (GR, CH).

She co-curated the improvised music series KlangBang in Basel, from 2015 until 2019, and she co-founded the organization AdhocArts in Athens Greece in 2021."

"Zumthor, whose father is the architect Peter Zumthor , broke a violin training in the kindergarten age. Through his father he was early familiar with Jazzmusik ; Only through hip-hop did he return to active music making and learned to play drums, largely as an autodidact . At the age of 19 he played in the (last) trio of Werner Lüdi . With his projects, he is present on national and international stages; For example in the duo with the pianist Vera Kappeler , as a soloist, or with the drummer theater "Die Hintertür" with Fritz Hauser and Rob Kloet . With Dominik Blum at the Hammondorgel he plays in the duo Azeotrope. Concert tours took him to over a dozen countries. Zumthor also works at the interfaces of music and visual art. He began to make the preparations for the church bells, which were altered in sound, for both music and art festivals.

Zumthor initiated numerous projects and formations. He was involved in world premieres of New Music , gave solo concerts, played theatermusics and composed architectural music and composed music. He worked with the composers Felix Profos and David Dramm as well as with the musicians Christian Weber , Anna Trauffer, Fritz Hauser, Achim Escher and Marek Otwinowski, Jürg Kienberger, Julian Sartorius and with the Ukrainian writer Yuri Andruchovych ( Werewolf Sutra ). With Samuel Streiff, he worked on the battles (2014).

In 2009, he received a work grant from the Canton of Graubünden to prepare his solo program. In 2015, the Duo Kappeler / Zumthor received the recognition prize of the city of Chur."
