The music to composer Craig Shepards performance work that presents listeners with text drawn from court testimony in the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church, here concentrating on the quiet long tones generated by wind instruments and ebow strings, where pure tones pass between the musicians to build a pulsating chord that then drops away tone by tone.

"In Broken Silence, music supports listeners engaging with text drawn from court testimony connected with the scandal in the Catholic Church. The 75-minute live performances includes spoken word and quiet long tones from winds and ebow strings.
In the live presentations, musicians sit in a circle surrounded by listeners in concentric rings. The music has three fifteen to eighteen minute parts with silence in between. Each part begins with a pure tone, which is passed between the musicians across the circle. Over five to ten minutes, tones are added one at a time, building a pulsating chord. Then tones drop out one at a time, often imperceptibly.
Shaping the flow of the piece, the speaker pays attention to the resonance with the musicians and listeners, moving forward or slowing down as needed."-Music for Contemplation

With roots in early minimalism, ambient music and acoustic ecology, these long-form "journeys" combine composed elements, often in the form of a fixed melodic pattern, with extensive improvisation while exploring the dulcimer's rich harmonic properties. Using a mix of traditional and experimental (extended) techniques in combination with his self-designed laptop-based processing system, Dan gives this ancient instrument and entirely new and contemporary identity. Two such performances are documented on his new double-CD release Electroacoustic Works on XI Records, New York (March 2017) Past performances include Human Resources (LA), CNMAT (Berkeley), Harrison House (Joshua Tree), Rhizome DC, Experimental Intermedia (NY), Issue Project Room (NY), Meridian Gallery (SF), Somarts Cultural Center (SF), Center for New Music (SF), Headlands Center for the Arts (CA), Highwire Gallery (PA), The Center, Corvallis (OR), Deep Listening Space (NY), Fringe Space (DC) and others." ^ Hide Bio for Dan Joseph
