Evoking the idea of space and restraint, Extent is a mostly acoustic improvisation project based around the trio of David Peck on clarinet, contralto & contrabass clarinet, saxophones flute, goat horn, synthesizer, theremin and percussion, fellow reedist Michael Caglianone, Michael Knoblach performing on percussion & objects, and joined by NY/Boston improviser Albey onBass on bass.

The ninth set from the Boston collective group Expanse led by Evil Clown label leader David Peck, combining improvisers with both a post-jazz and post-rock aesthetic, here as an electroacoustic septet with an extended and unusual percussion set, as performed by David Peck, DNA Girl, Eric Dahlman, DNA Girl, Count Robot, Tim Mungenast, and Michael Knoblach.

Perhaps the most synthetic of Evil Clown releases, Expanse represents space and restraint, this the 8th album from the Boston improvising collective of David Peck on reeds, winds, synths and percussion, Robin Amos on synths, Michael Knoblach on percussion (including egg beater, humpty dumpty toy, and teething rings) and Joel Simches providing real-time processing; inexplicably interesting.

After receiving interest in joining the Evil Clown collective from Count Robot and DNA Girl (Deb Angelosanto), and in parallel from guitarist Tim Mungenast, collective director David Peck scheduled a session for this 7th Expanse album, adding drummer Michael Knoblach to complete this quintet configuration of the band's electric-oriented approach to space and restraint.

The Boston-based Expanse, inspired by the concepts of space and restraint, configured as a trio in a livestreamed session where Evil Clown stalwart David Peck on clarinets, saxophones, fog horns & percussion is joined by Eric Woods on analog synth & percussion, and Michael Knoblach, who focuses on exotic percussion instruments, for a unique journey in electroacoustic improv.

Covering vast approaches to improvised and experimental music, based around scrabbly free playing, dark rock intensity, experimental and abstract tapestries of sound and unexpected transitions,the Minneapolis quartet of guitarists Luke Polipnick & Erik Fratzke, bassist Brian Courage and drummer Tim Glenn tell a consistent narrative of urgently creative exploration; gripping.

The project name inspired by the concepts of space and restraint, this well-recorded live performance between multi-reedist/instrumentalist David Peck and drummer Michael Knoblach, both using a wealth of percussive devices and sonorous instruments, was live-streamed from the Boston Evil Clown Headquarters, showing the "Breadth" of their expansive ears.

In May of 2021 Evil Clown label leader, multi-reedist and percussionist David Peck re-opened his performance space to fully vaccinated musicians, inviting Michael Caglianone on saxophones, Michael Knoblach on percussion, including rattlesnake drums, baskets of rocks, shakers, &c., recording this extended, rich, ruminative and introspective improvisation.

David Peck's Grand Aesthetic approach to compositional structures for groupings of any size and orchestral combination leads to unexpected and sometimes exotic results, as heard in this live and monumental performance of his Expanse project expanded with percussionist Michael Knoblach, David Welans on flutes, Eric Dahlman on trumpet and Jimmy Zhao on Chinese instruments.
