The Suspensao octet are heard in this live performance at SMUP, in Parede, Portugal in 2023, blending primarily acoustic instruments with electric guitar and analog synth, using a reductionist approach to highly concentrative and suspenseful free improvisation, their long-running collective history allowing an impressive level of articulation and control through the integration of diverse voices.

Recorded live at SMUP, in Parede, Portugal, on January 26th, 2023, by Claudio Rego.
"The Portuguese improvised scene has become essential over the years for its experimental chamber music and its multiple projects bringing together a huge pool of musicians - musicians of variable geometry with a deep sense of the collective. Ernesto Rodrigues is undoubtedly one of his most remarkable catalysts, both by the number and diversity of the groups in which he participates and by the systematic publication of quality recordings via his Creative Sources label.
In addition to Ernesto on viola "violin" and crackle box, we note the presence of his usual collaborators such as Nuno Torres on alto sax, Bruno Parrinha on bass clarinet, Joao Madeira on double bass, Carlos Santos on modular synth and Jose Oliveira on percussion. Luisa Goncalves and Flak complete this Suspensao set on piano and electric guitar respectively.
This Impromptu sounds like a very coherent work of great sonic diversity. The interweaving of the individual interventions works wonderfully, each one standing out for a short moment from the whole or acting as a watermark. The dynamics and the egalitarian sense of the collective are the key words of the Suspensao ensemble. Miasma, buzzing, stray notes, isolated interventions, vibrations, hesitations, quivering of the bow, pecks, fragile glissandi or persistent rustlings, micro percussive strikes, all these figures of style and spontaneous sounds create a weft, a moving patchwork where point to sudden directions, changes of course or a complete renewal of the soundscape. An idea emitted by the viola results in a friction of the guitar, squeaks generate clusters on the piano which vanish in favor of a slight percussive crash or an electronic vibration.
Over the course of the unique improvisation with an improbable title, the lighting and the perspective change as if we were entering another universe. By soliciting a myriad of possible sounds within their instrumentarium, the eight improvisers of Suspensao create a delicate and elusive momentum while focusing our listening. thirty-five minutes slipping away like a dream. A marvelous moment of eminently collective improvised music."-Jean-Michel van Schouwburg, Orynx (via Google Translate)

When I went to study at the Conservatório de Lisboa my role model was doublebassist João Panta Nunes, and lately my studies were oriented by Jorge Lee, at Cascais. I have a degree in Musicology, investigation work on Fado's candidature to World Immaterial Heritage by UNESCO, and coordination of the Music Department at INATEL/FNAT. Since 1999 I have a strong activity (studio and performance) in several styles and genres, but improvised music and original composition (whatever the style...) are the places where my musical language riches its higher satisfaction and plenitude. In the recordings you are about to hear it's me who plays all the instruments. My passion is at the simple act of artistic creation. For me, music is all about musicians and genuine expression! It doesn't matter the genre neither the instrument per si. In theater I have collaborations (musician, composer, actor) with Companhia do Chapitô and Artistas Unidos, amongst others. I also love books (...) I've studied aesthetics and Portuguese literature since I remember, and love to read and write poetry." ^ Hide Bio for Joao Madeira • Show Bio for Carlos Santos "Studied painting with António Sena (Ar.Co, 1988 -1992), worked in advertising for a period of time, but nowadays works as graphic designer in corporate identity, packaging, web and audio-video production. As an improvisor, his aproach to percussion is similar to Paul Lovens, Roger Turner, Lê Quan Ninh and Paul Lytton. He prefers a non conventional "set", where he uses instruments and objects as raw materials to create an improvised language rich in terms of timbre and textures. To this he adds sometimes inside piano manipulations and prepared guitar, in the same way as John Cage: the objects are placed on the strings or in between them in real-time performance, and not according to a previous plan. He belonged to Sei Miguel collective between 1989 and 1996, played with Carlos Bechegas and Pedro Roxo and has a regular activity with Ernesto Rodrigues." ^ Hide Bio for Jose Oliveira
