Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"This release captures Lina Allemano (trumpet), Uwe Oberg (piano), Matthias Bauer (double bass) and Rudi Fisherlehner (drums & percussion) 2 days after they played at Kühlspot. It's the third time they played together, at least according to Bauer's website. But it doesn't show. They sound like a working band with a strong rapport between all the players. By that, I mean that the interaction and responses to what each musician hears are excellent. All titles relate to nature's way of dealing with water: whirlpool or maelstrom (from the Dutch maalstroom).

Damn, my reviews are relatively short, but I lack the words for this one. The longest track is just short of half an hour. The shortest is just under two minutes long. The other two are seventeen and ten minutes long-and never a dull moment. The musicians create a maelstrom, or sometimes a trickle of water but always controlled and relatively tonal. Alleman whips up beautiful long lines or short fanfarelike intervals of fourths. I'm really impressed by this release. Maybe the best word to describe this music is chamber music jazz. Delicate, restless at times and in other instances calm as dead water, but only for a moment, and bristling with ideas, however fleeting they may be. Be distracted, and it's gone. What I mean is that you have to listen intently to catch the tiniest details and hear the musicians respond to each other. Kudos to the recording engineer Tito Knapp, Fisherlehner, who did the mixing and Olaf Rupp for the mastering. It all sounds crisp and lively. All the details can be heard distinctly. Get this one immediately!"-Mark Daelmans-Sikkel, Vital Weekly

Artist Biographies

"Lina Allemano is a Canadian trumpeter, improviser, and composer based in Toronto ON since 1993, originally hailing from Edmonton AB. She has an active international career, performing and recording cutting-edge contemporary music primarily in free-jazz/improvised/experimental/avant-garde settings, but also working in a wide array of other genres. For the past several years, Lina has been splitting her time between Toronto and Berlin, with one foot in Berlin's flourishing and uncompromising art-music scene and the other foot in Toronto's vibrant but somewhat under-the-radar experimental-music scene. Lina was featured as one of the top innovative trumpeters for the future in DownBeat Magazine, and her trumpet playing, compositions, and artistic vision have gained her international recognition as being "adventurous, expressive, compelling, forward thinking, inventive, and sophisticated".

As well as leading her longtime acoustic free-jazz band, LINA ALLEMANO FOUR, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2015, she also fronts the electric improvising group, TITANIUM RIOT. She has been touring extensively with both bands all across Europe, USA, and Canada for many years. (See below for more info on these groups). Lina is also busy collaborating with a very long and ever-expanding list of exciting international improvisers, and is a member of many other active creative groups as a side-person. As a composer, she has been commissioned to compose works for such ensembles as Vancouver's NOW Orchestra. Lina has released 8 of her own internationally-acclaimed albums on her Lumo Records label - 6 with LINA ALLEMANO FOUR featuring her original compositions: Sometimes Y (2017), Live at the Tranzac (2012), Jargon (2010), Gridjam (2008), Pinkeye (2006), and Concentric (2003) - and 2 with TITANIUM RIOT: Squish It! (2017), Kiss the Brain (2014). Her trumpet playing can also be heard on over 40 other albums as well as countless film and television soundtracks.

"Uwe Oberg *1962 Offenbach / Germany, lives in Wiesbaden nearby Frankfurt.

He started playing piano at the age of seven, moved in the early 80s from popular music to Jazz and joined in 1986 the KOOPERATIVE NEW JAZZ / ARTist Wiesbaden, an association of improvising musicians. Improvisation is the keyword for his work. Impressed by Free Jazz and New Music, he developed exceptional piano techniques; influences are Thelonious Monk, Paul Bley, Cecil Taylor, Don Pullen, Ran Blake, Andrew Hill, the music of Anthony Braxton, the early piano compositions of John Cage as well as european free improvisation. He is also a composer and a highly individual interpret of Jazz-compositions.

He works in various musical contexts: as a soloist he bends the bow from inside piano to the music of Monk. With LACY POOL he dives into the music of Steve Lacy, the duo with SILKE EBERHARD plays originals as well as music by Carla Bley, Annette Peacock a.o. ROPE is an improvising quartet with european line-up. Whatever Oberg plays, he transforms each material in his very personal, twinkling sound without musical borders.

Beside fixed projects he enjoys the improvised encounter with musicians from different styles and cultures. He often played in combination with other artforms, theatre / dance / lyrics, currently mainly with silent films, as a soloist and with ensembles. Cooperation with: ALFRED HARTH, PETER KOWALD, XU FENGXIA, MATTHIAS SCHUBERT, PHILIPPE MICOL, JÜRGEN WUCHNER, ULI PHILLIPP, TONY OXLEY, SVEN-AKE JOHANSSON, RUDI MAHALL, HR JAZZENSEMBLE, HEINZ SAUER, URS LEIMGRUBER, SAADET TÜRKÖZ, SUBROTO ROY CHAUDHURI, PAUL LOVENS, AXEL DÖRNER, FRANK GRATKOWSKI, EVAN PARKER a.m.o.

In December 2007 Oberg got the award HESSISCHER JAZZPREIS. Laudatio by Dr. Wolfram Knauer (in German Language)"
