"Led by the French pianist Eve Risser, the Red Desert Orchestra is a hybrid formation in which musicians from Europe and Africa rub shoulders in the service of music resolutely haunting, magnifying the polyrhythmic intertwining to the point of vertigo through a writing as demanding in its form as resolute in its ambitions. Stakeholder of ten different configurations, from solo to large ensemble, Eve Risser develops in this context her talents as a composer by adding the sounds of balafons to her orchestra, djembes and bara, from West Africa. Lines and sounds weave in tireless hypnotic loops that lead the listener to a spiritual and nomadic experience, from which brilliant soloists emerge.

In Eve's own words: "this Orchestra took over from the White Desert Orchestra. My current influences were Mali, my work with the Kaladjula Band and Nainy Diabaté.

It is a work with people and with the body: the search for soft trance for Eurythmia and dance for Kogoba Basigui, the two programs that we carry with this orchestra. SOYYAYA is an arrangement of the piece "Après Un Rêve" (Clean Feed, 2019) out of a prepared romantic-mechanical solo piano original piece. This is kind of where I've been for a while. Between dance, trance, techno, West African music (and so many others!) and romanticism, expressionism. For the other songs I came with ideas orally and we have them all arranged together. GÄMSE is a piece completely written by me as well. We play it in the other Kogoba program as well.

We work orally because not everyone reads music and especially wanting to avoid "efficiency" of writing and getting into a slow process. Treat yourself to the luxury of the "long term". See how the music can anchor itself in us and dress the group to the skin and with the time that pass. Slow process = rare these days I find, but humanly very very strong! It's really worth it!

In relation to the work that we carried out to create this orchestra and this repertoire, I evoke willingly the image of weaving: at the beginning the weaving was thicker, as if we had had big needles and big yarns and little by little, it became fine lace, with wide variety of colors. When we work orally, we start with large blocks, to remember music easily, before refining with smaller needles and thread. If we do not see for a long time, the colors may be more intense (because everyone will be going back to his or her home and will have nurtured his musical individualy) but the needles and wool will be larger again."-Clean Feed

"Eve Risser has her musical roots in chamber music as a flutist and pianist. While residing in Alsace, France, she merged in to the contemporary and jazz/improvised music world. In June 2008, she got the 1st Piano Price in Jazz & Improvised Music at National Conservatory in Paris, a soloist price at the International Competition of La Défense. From 2009 to 2013 she took part of National Jazz Orchestra of Fance (ONJ) directed by Danie Yvinec. Eve's multifaceted musical creativity has been heard in various settings, festivals and groups throughout the world.

She performs solo with piano or electric harpsichord and a her own improvisations or compositions. She leads and co-leads, plays, and composes in the Donkey Monkey with Yuko Oshima ; in the quartet The New Songs with the swedish singer and composer Sofia Jernberg, Kim Myhr and David Stackenäs ; in the trio EN-CORPS (Risser/Duboc/Perraud) ans many others.

Currently Eve's musical life is based out of Paris where she is involved in organizing creative music live performances and the label UMLAUT. "Antonin-Tri Hoang began playing the classical clarinet at the age of nine and moved very quickly towards jazz when he discovered the swing of the 1930s1. His father-in-law, a rock guitarist keen on gypsy jazz, encouraged him to improvise very early on . Antonin-Tri Hoang then learned the saxophone and the piano and immersed himself in the history of jazz.

From his beginnings, he performed very often on stage in various contexts on saxophone, clarinet or piano, but also in the theater as in the play Une Bête Sur La Lune by Richard Kalinoski (five "Molière" in 2001)1 . At 16 he entered the jazz and improvised music class, directed by Riccardo Del Fra, from the CNSMD in Paris. Then he took classes in the generative improvisation class led by Vincent Lê Quang1.

In 2007 he wrote a tribute piece for and with Michel Legrand at the piano at the IAJE in New York. He composed music for two films by director Ambarish Mannepalli: Chassé-croisé in 2008 and Wink of The Eye in 2009. He also composed for two exhibitions by Pierre Huyghe: The Host and The Cloud in October 2009 and February 20101.

In 2009 he was spotted by Daniel Yvinec, artistic director of a new ONJ whose musicians chosen from the heart of the new French jazz scene are multi-instrumentalists and from different cultures2.

He co-founded the November group, the group of four clarinets WATT, Grand Bazar with the pianist Ève Risser for a program Ligeti/Carla Bley/J-S.Bach/Aphex Twin, participated in the quintet of drummer Anne Paceo, at the Aum Grand Ensemble , at Matteo Bortone's Travellers, at Guilhem Flouzat One Way or Another... With Jean-Jacques Birgé and Vincent Segal he recorded film music and acted in public on Dépaysages, an experimental film by Jacques Perconte.

In 2011 he released his first duet album with Benoit Delbecq, Aéroplanes, under the Bee Jazz label. The title, Aéroplanes, evokes the buzzing of a wasp and literature3: "Here, says Albertine to me, there is an aeroplane, it is very high, very high (Marcel Proust, La Prisonnière)"4. He plays saxophone and bass clarinet.

In 2017, he received the Prix Swiss Life à 4 mains5, with the photographer SMITH, which enabled him to compose a 16-way spatialized score for their installation at the Palais de Tokyo as part of the exhibition Le rêve des Formes.

In 2019, he created Disparitions6 at the Festival d'Automne in Paris and staged the musical theater play Chewing Gum Silence 7directed by Samuel Achache with whom he created Original from a lost copy [archive] at the Théâtre de l'Aquarium in 2020. He also plays in Peplum by Fantazio and Théo Ceccaldi, in the Fakebooks8 trio with Thibault Cellier and Sylvain Darrifourcq."

"Sakina Abdou: Saxophones, recorder

Born in 1984 in Lille, where she currently lives, Sakina Abdou is a saxophonist, flautist and plastic artist. She studied the flute (early and contemporary music) and the saxophone (classical/contemporary/jazz) at the Music Academy of Lille and Roubaix. She graduated from the Fine Arts School of Tourcoing and Valenciennes (DNAP,DNSEP) and also has a State Diploma of Music Teacher.

Since 1998, she has been a member of various music bands in Lille's area. In parallel to her studies, she has explored free improvisation, experimental and contemporary music within various entities :

"La Pieuvre" orchestra, led by Olivier Benoit, part of the collective of musicians " Muzzix " ("Feldspath", Circum-disc, 2013), the band "Vazytouille", part of the collective of musicians " Zoone Libre " ("Vazytouille", Circum-disc, 2011), "Le Miroir et le marteau" led by rock drummer Guigou Chenevier ("Le Miroir et le Marteau, Inouï Productions, 2012), the FreeRock quintet "Eliogabal" ("Mo", Becoq, 2014) or the Toc Compulsive Brass band ("Air Bump", Circum-Disc, 2016).

Since 2014, she has collaborated with the Dedalus ensemble to reinterpret the work of american minimalist composers like Philip Glass or Moondog ("Round The World of Sound", New World Records, 2016) and has also played with "Organik Orkeztra" led by the pianist Jeremy Ternoy from Lille and the Basque singer Kristof Hiriart ("Beraz", LagunArte Productions, 2018).

In 2012, she co-founded "Bi-Ki?", a duet with fellow saxophonist Jean-Baptiste Rubin. With a wish to explore acoustic as well as amplified sounds, they teamed up with Jean Luc Guionnet to record their first album ("Quelque chose au milieu", LX/Becoq, 2016). They also collaborate with Simon Henocq during residencies where their work culminates in restitutions that are part live concert, part sound installation, part art performance.

Crossing over many styles, she is currently a member of the improvisation trio "Abdou Dang Orins" and Julien Tortora's sextet "Phuisis" ( whose creations revolve around French philosopher Charles Fourrier's work). She also took part in film screenings with live music, with Jean-Baptiste Rubin ("Le Bonheur") and Ivan Cruz ("Ciné-concert de papier"). She is also involved in other orchestral projects such as "le Grand Orchestre de Muzzix", "Ritual" with Organik Orkeztra, the "Red Desert Orchestra" led by Eve Risser, and "Hoquetus" (Dedalus/ Muzzix). "Grégoire Tirtiaux is a baritone and alto saxophone player, famous among Belgian jazz lovers, and even far beyond the Kingdom. Always looking for new sounds, both modern and with a strong traditional background (Arabic, West-African, Gipsy or Indian), he's trying to perform a music that speaks to the soul here and now from a deep place. He's also performing morsing, guembri, and learns dhrupad vocals with Sayeeduddin Dagar, that he invites frequently to his place. He is a member of the Fanfare du Belgistan since 2001, a band which has traveled all around Europe, and has worked with artists such as Okay Temiz, les Ogres de Barback, Gangbe Brassband and Néry.His love for Moroccan gnawa music, and his diligence in learning it from 2004, under the maalem Hassan el Gadiri, lead him to create the band Trance Mission, featuring Laurent Blondiau, Jeroen Van Herzeele, Quentin Manfroy, Joao Lobo and Giovanni di Domenico. "Born in 1977 has developed a very individual approach on his instrument, exploring the wide range between notes and noise by generating frequencies using an extended embouchure technique, different mutes or vibrating surfaces. "Matthias Müller was born 1971 in Zeven, Germany and starting playing trombone in the local trombone choir at the age of 10. From 1994 to 1999 he studied jazz-trombone at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, where he also made his first steps into improvised music. His CD "Bhavan", which was released in 2004, was produced by Chicago based musician and journalist John Corbett. In the same year he moved to Berlin and has since been regularly playing with internationally recognized improvisers such as John Edwards, Mark Sanders, George Lewis, Johannes Bauer, Jeb Bishop, Tobias Delius, Olaf Rupp, Paul Lovens, Toshimaru Nakamura, Clayton Thomas, Michael Vorfeld, Axel Dörner, and many more. "Oumarou BAMBARA, said "Mandela" Musician, Author, Composer and Arranger

Originally from Bobo-Dioulasso, in Burkina Faso, he grew up in the famous neighborhood of musicians, called "Bolomakoté". From the age of 7, he began his apprenticeship with the greatest balafonists, such as Mahama Konaté, the founder of the mythical group FARAFINA, recognized worldwide. At the same time, he trained with Soungalo Traoré and the percussionist Paco Yé.

His curiosity and his desire for creativity led him to also train in other instruments. He became a specialist in Bara, Doundoun, Kamalén'goni, Tama, Djembe and Balafon.

"Drummer and composer, Emmanuel Scarpa is at the crossroads of many paths of contemporary creation. He began by playing the drums in a punk-rock group in a self-taught way, his career was then marked by studies of classical writing in the conservatories of Lyon and Grenoble where he obtained the 1st prizes for harmony, counterpoint and fuga, all crowned with a Sacem prize.
