"This trio recording is a great addition to all Paul Dunmall's already weight discography ( 101 + CDs on this label alone!
Bassist James Owston (one of the five final contenders for the title of BBC Young Jazz Musician in 2018) and drummer Tymek Jo (winner of the Tony Levin drum prize) are former graduates of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire; both have previously recorded with Dunmall in various configurations but not as a trio. Their musical involvements outside of the modern jazz mainstream and free improvisation scenes include some that are far flung: Owston has composed for cross media projects involving live art and animation as part of the sounding Eye Collective. While Joe Wiak has taken a traditional turn, performing ancient Hispanic musics as a member of the K'Antu Ensemble.
It's free jazz that provides the common language here, with the qualities of malleability, quick wittedness and close listening looming large. Melodic licks developed on the fly give the improvisations a strong narrative quality. There are lush abstractions and some good-time grooving, elements that flux without force. And whilst there is inevitably some high energy leavening, an unhurried, sparing quality predominates, allowing the tone colors from all three instrumentalists to resound."-David Ilic, from the liner notes
