"Christoph Irniger, born 1979, is a Swiss saxophonist, composer and bandleader. According to the Sunday edition of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung he is "undoubtedly one of the greatest talents of his generation." In recent years, Irniger has made a name for himself in a range of line-ups, playing jazz, rock and related musical styles. As a musician from a generation which likes to work on multiple projects in eclectic styles, he leads a range of outfits, all distinct and surprising musically. The Swiss magazine Jazz 'N' More writes: "He comes up with something new each time by leaving the beaten tracks of sound. He doesn't just look briefly left and right; he fights his way into the thicket." An instrumentalist with a firm education, and a composer with an artistic vision, he consistently generates new ideas, realised thanks to a passion for music. German magazine Jazzthetik says: "People who know about jazz will confirm that he is one of the most promising musicians in contemporary Swiss jazz."

Irniger is leader of the band Pilgrim (with Dave Gisler, Stefan Aeby, Raffaele Bossard and Michael Stulz) and the Christoph Irniger Trio (with Raffaele Bossard and Ziv Ravitz), which between them have released four albums so far: two by the Trio, Gowanus Canal (Intakt Records 2013) and Octopus (Intakt Records, 2015) and two from Pilgrim, Mt. Tongariro (Between The Lines, 2011) and Italian Circus Story (Intakt Records, 2014). The latter featured in three best album lists of 2014, including Cadence Magazine (USA). Jazzwise (UK) described them as "a homegrown rising young sax star's quintet!" Irniger's debut recording Chat Noir was released in 2008 on Brambus Records.

Irniger loves jazz, and his playing is strongly rooted in this tradition, influenced by its various exponents. He does not see jazz as representing a particular sound or content, however, but as a way of making music. He says, "to me jazz is that music which always processes the music of its time. It's more about how you play than what you play." He gets ideas from every style of music, and from life itself; in this sense, the main inspirations are his home, Lake Zurich, the mountains, his family, people, travelling (above all New York) and a range of other art-forms. They give him the themes and feed his passion for music, and Irniger places melody above everything else. Even in dense, complex passages, or within free jazz playing, he seeks out the moment, and tries to give the various instruments' melodic lines equal weight. The journalist Peter Haffner writes of his compositions, "the pieces are tone poems, which show that catchy melodies and complex soundscapes need not be mutually exclusive, in fact they each need the other to come to fruition."

His regular visits to Berlin and New York have led to a number of diverse collaborations, including: Nasheet Waits (No Reduce Jaywalkin' (nWog, 2013)), Don Philippe, and the band Counterpoints with Ohad Talmor, Bänz Oester and Vinnie Sperrazza. He has also played with Dave Douglas, Chris Lightcap, Dan Weiss, Nils Wogram, Claudio Puntin, Max Frankl, Stefan Rusconi, Mats Spillmann, Christian Weber, Chris Wiesendanger and Vera Kappeler. He was a member of the Lucerne Jazz Orchestra for seven years and can be heard on four of their recordings. He is also co-leader of the prog-rock band Cowboys from Hell.

From 2000 to 2006 Irniger studied music education at the Zurich Jazz School, and performance at the Lucerne School of Music with Christoph Grab and Nat Su. In the following years he took lessons from Dave Liebman, Mark Turner and Ari Hoenig. He won the Friedel Wald Foundation development award in 2004, received the Borsa di Studio for Siena Jazz University in 2006 and achieved third place in the 2010 ZKB Jazz Prize with the Cowboys from Hell. Between 2015 and 2017 his band Pilgrim were awarded high priority act from Pro Helvetia - Swiss Arts Council. His work has been documented on twenty albums to date, five under his own name. He has played concerts and tours throughout Europe, Asia and the USA.

Christoph Irniger initiated the concert series Jazz im Seefeld and was co-founder of the Jazzwerkstatt Zürich festival. He is also part of the programming team for the Unerhört! Festival and teaches at Zurich University of the Arts and the Musikschule Konservatorium in Zurich."

In the end of 2004 Samo went again to New York for two months, where he played in various jazz clubs (Detour, 55 Bar) and recorded there two new projects as a leader with some of the best jazz musicians in the world: one with Tony Malaby, Mark Helias and Tom Rainey, and the other one with Dave Binney, Josh Roseman, Mark Helias and Gerald Cleaver. The first project was released on Fresh Sound Records in early 2006 as Samo Salamon Quartet: Two Hours, receiving rave reviews from all over the world again, especially in magazines like Downbeat, Musica Jazz, Allaboutjazz and others. The second project was released in fall 2006 again on Fresh Sound Records as Samo Salamon NYC Quintet: Government Cheese. Like Ornethology and Ela's Dream, Government Cheese also got the highest rating (4 stars) in the Penguin Jazz Guide.

In 2005 Samo had a longer European tour with a new quartet featuring Achille Succi (Italy), Carlo DeRosa and Tyshawn Sorey from the USA. The result of the tour was a new CD Samo Salamon New Quartet: Kei's Secret released in 2006 on Splasch Records. The record only strengthened Salamon's status as one of the best young jazz guitarists and composers in the world.

Salamon started 2006 with the project (Michel Godard, Julian Arguelles and Roberto Dani) with a performance in Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana. The concert was recorded and released in 2007 on the Slovene label Goga Musica as Samo Šalamon European Quartet: Nano. The record also marked the beginning of Salamon's collaboration with the best tuba player in the world, Michel Godard. The same year Salamon recorded another record with Michel Godard, where also two Italian virtuosos participated, accordion player Luciano Biondini and drummer Roberto Dani. The record was released in 2007 on the Italian label Splasc(h) Records as Samo Šalamon European Quartet: Fall Memories. That the year 2006 was really fruitful in Samo Salamon's work proves yet two another excellent projects. In February 2006 Salamon had a European tour with an excellent lineup (Mark Turner - tenor saxophone, Matt Brewer on bass and drummer Aljoša Jerič). The band again recorded an album Mamasaal feat. Mark Turner which was released in late 2008. In the end of 2006 Salamon had another European tour in Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Slovenia and Great Britain, which featured two stars from the jazz world, bassist Drew Gress and drummer Tom Rainey. The project was recorded in Switzerland and was released in 2011 by the label Sanje as Samo Salamon Trio feat. Drew Gress & Tom Rainey: Almost Almond. The CD received great reviews from the USA and Europe, strengthening Salamon's reputation as one of the best guitarists in Europe.

In 2007 Salamon had two European tours with two new projects. In May 2007 he had a tour in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia and Belgium with his New Quartet (Donny McCaslin, John Hebert and Gerald Cleaver), which again received amazing reviews. The band recorded a live album, which is waiting to be released. Salamon finished 2007 with a promotional tour of his two 2007 records. The group featured again Michel Godard on tuba, and two excellent players - french violinist Dominique Pifarely and drummer Dejan Terzić.

The year 2008 began with a longer European tour with the jazz legend Tim Berne and drummer Tom Rainey. In 2011, the CD SAMO SALAMON BASSLESS TRIOS: Duality (Samo Records, 2011) with Tim Berne, Tom Rainey, Achille Succi & Roberto Dani was released featuring a US and a European Bassless Trio.

In 2009, Samo Salamon had a trio featuring the best tuba player in the world Michel Godard and drummer Roberto Dani. The band recorded a live CD Live!, which was released in the end of 2009. The same trio played on jazz festival Ljubljana and Maribor in 2010 and had a long European tour in Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Germany and Slovenia also in 2011. The band recorded a new CD Samo Salamon Trio feat. Michel Godard & Roberto Dani was released in September 2012. In 2013, Samo Salamon released a new CD entitled SAMO SALAMON QUARTETS: Stretching Out featuring 2 amazing bands - a US one with Donny McCaslin, John Hebert and Gerald Cleaver and a European one with Dominique Pifarely, Bruno Chevillon and Roberto Dani.

Since 2001, Samo Salamon has regularly had tours and played all over the world in many world recognized venues, clubs and festivals in Europe (Italy, France, Germany, Austria, UK, Belgium, Switzerland, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Romania, Liechtenstein, Croatia, Macedonia...) and USA, which again showes his strong reputation in the world of jazz. He has released 20 CDs as a leader, which all featured his own compositions - so far, Samo has composed more than 200 compositions."

He works in groups like Pedra Contida, Open Field, Staub Quartet, in duo with Angélica V. Salvi, Chamber 4 and Fail Better!, this last two were considered two of the best newcomer bands in the last years.

Beside his projects he worked and shared the stage with dozens of musicians, such as : Burton Greene, Elliott Sharp, Burkhard Beins, Liz Allbee, Evan Parker, Carlos "Zíngaro", Toshimaru Nakamura, Andrea Neumann, Théo Ceccaldi, Werner Dafeldecker among many others.

Apart from work as musician, Marcelo organises the Double Bill - Concert Series, and runs the record label Cipsela."

"Born in Barcelona, Vasco Trilla started playing drums at the age of nineteen. His first influences were progressive rock and metal, but gradually he developed an interest in a variety of different genres such as jazz, Indian music, African music, klezmer, free improvisation, etc.

Since then he has collaborated, toured and recorded with many different bands and projects such as Boi Akih (an ethno-jazz band from the Netherlands), Planeta Imaginario (progressive jazz-rock) October Equus (avant-rock), The Oddvisers (pop-avant), Fine! (indie pop-rock), Mundo Flotante (ethno-jazz-rock), Kaulakau/Cobla Sant Jordi (an ethno-jazz Catalan orchestra), Filthy Habits Ensemble (a jazz octet playing Zappa's and Stravinsky's repertoire), Cows On Trees (a jazz-improv quartet with Susana Santos Silva and Kaja Draksler), Balimonster (an impro-ethno duo with Angel Ontalva), Yedo Gibson-Vasco Trilla duo (an improv sax & drums duo), Outerzone (jazz-core), Reptilian Mambo (mambo free rock), Liba's Traum, etc.

In the last years he has been playing and experimenting on the free-improv scene, applying extended techniques to the kit and treating it as a textural-melodic instrument. Blowing, bowing, scratching, playing with hands and all kinds of objects, all is valid to expand the vocabulary of this innovative percussionist. He played with improvisers, such as: Lotte Anker, Marshall Allen, Yedo Gibson, Susana Santos Silva, Kaja Draksler, Jasper Stadhouders, Mikloaj Trzaska, Martin Kuchen, Richard Barrett, Jorma Tapio, Christher Bothen, Marc Stucki, Luc Ex. etc...

He has released around 30 CDs in labels such as Cuneiform Records (USA), Altrock Records (Italy), Leo Records (UK) Discordian Records (Barcelona, Spain), Audition Records (Mexico), El Negocito Records (Belgium), Jacc Records (Portugal), Fmr Records (UK)."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"During the first lockdown in spring 2020 my creative fire was still burning. All concerts were cancelled, but I still wanted to play and improvise. That's were the idea for long-distance improvisation came up.

I'm really happy that some of the best improvisers in Europe were happy to participate in this project. All tracks are completely improvised or could be even described as structured improvisation. So much thanks goes to all the amazing players for their creativity, kindness and amazing playing.

The title of the album and all the compositions are based on a poem by the great US poet E.E. Cummings, while Kristijan Robič contributed beautiful artwork for the design of the album."-Samo Salamon
