Artist Biographies:

"Axel Dörner (born 26 April 1964 in Cologne, Germany) is a German jazz musician (trumpet and piano) and composer.

Dörner studied piano in the Dutch town Arnhem (1988-89) and at the Music Academy in Cologne (1989-1996). From 1991 he studied trumpet with Malte Burba, and during his studies he collaborated with trumpeter Bruno Light in the "The Street Fighters Duo". At this time he also joined the ensembles "The Street Fighters Quartet" and "The Street Fighters Double Quartet" together with Matthias Schubert, Bruno Leicht, and Claudio Puntin. In addition the "Axel Dörner Quartet" was initiated (with Frank Gratkowski, Hans Schneider and Martin Blume). With saxophonist Matthias Petzold. he participated on the albums Lifelines and Psalmen Und Lobgesänge.

Dörner has resided in Berlin since 1994, and occurs in the most diverse settings like "The London Jazz Composers Orchestra" and with "Hedros" (together with Mats Gustafsson, Günter Christmann, Barry Guy and others). Since then he has contributed on more than 50 album recordings.

Dörner is distinguished mainly by his versatility. He bouth play the more traditional Bebop, just like he fits in to classic Free Jazz or electronic music. He playd with Otomo Yoshihide at the Donaueschinger Musiktage in 2005. Dörner play both solo concerts and collaborates with his trio "TOOT" (together with Phil Minton and Thomas Lehn) and "Die Anreicherung" with Christian Lillinger, Håvard Wiik and Jan Roder, and in Ken Vandermarks "Territory-Band". Dörner is an integral part of the Berlin scene of experimental new improvisational music. Dörner was given special attention for his interpretation of all compositions by Thelonious Monk, with the pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach and his own band "Die Enttäuschung" released on a three CD album (Monks Casino, Complete 2005)."-Wikipedia

"After taking up the bass, around 1987, John Edwards co-formed The Pointy Birds who went on to win awards for their music for The Cholmondeleys and Featherstonehaughs dance troupes. The group appeared at festivals in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Moers, Leverkusen, Copenhagen. Around 1990, Edwards played his first gigs with London improvisers such as Roger Turner, Lol Coxhill, Maggie Nicols, Phil Minton.

Between 1990 and 1995 Edwards was a member of three touring groups simultaneously: B-Shops For The Poor, The Honkies and GOD. During this period he also became an increasingly regular player on the London improvised music scene and performed his first solo gigs; he composed and performed music theatre with the bass and cello duo The Great Explorers, street-busked a lot and appeared at many more festivals in Germany, Estonia, France, Italy, Czech, etc.

Since 1995 John Edwards has become a "mainstay" of the London scene, playing with just about everybody, an activity that has seen him clocking up between 150 and 200 gigs a year. He has become regular player with Evan Parker, in many groupings, and with Tony Bevan, Veryan Weston, and Elton Dean, often in collaboration with Mark Sanders on percussion. He has become a more frequent player on the European (and festival) scene, appearing at Taktlos, Ulrichsburg, Nickelsdorf, Budapest, New Zealand and in the USA. He continues to work on solo performances."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"By now it is generally accepted that there is such a category as Germanic free improvisation. One separate from the Peter Brötzmann, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Gunter Sommer, Peter Kowald, Manfred Schoof, Gerd Dudek, Albert Mangelsdorff, etc, etc. school of free jazz that machine-gunned its way into the European scene of the late 1960s. These new rebels include three musicians heard here: Axel Dorner, Matthias Lorenz, and Robert Landfermann, plus artists such as Andrea Neumann, Burkhard Beins, Oliver Schwerdt, and Christian Lillinger, to name just a few.

Their music is more patient and imperturbable than that of their forefathers. For instance, Dörner's trumpet can sometimes be heard as merely breath for an entire performance, or he can utilize processing that disguises any notion of the instrument. The question to be posed then is, can he play changes? Absolutely. Dörner can be heard in the alt-swinging Die Enttäuschung, and von Schlippenbach's Monk's Casino (Intakt, 2005), in which the band covered every composition by Thelonious Monk. The same can be said for bassist Robert Landfermann in groups led by Pablo Held, and the various New Old Luten Projects. Of course, the Brit bassist John Edwards has performed with everyone from Louis Moholo-Moholo to Sunny Murray, François Carrier, Joe McPhee, and Charles Gayle.

What then to expect from Tibor Prettschnöder? The Largo And The Lame comes with the admonition, "This recording is proven to be listened to at night. Just watch out your window and do not move in any way!" Resisting the advice and listening to this during the daytime still has its intended effect. The 45 minutes and four tracks cast an otherworldly, almost paranormal spell. Bowed basses drag elongated tones while processed trumpet (if indeed Dörner is utilizing his full horn) glazes the affair with an unearthly hum. This beast of a sound is moving at a torpid pace. Basses squeal with a metallic hum as electronics mimic the sound of air flow. Imaginary scenes are conjured, and maybe the suggestions of a factory, railways, and rocket fire arise as placebo. Nonetheless, the imagined is always stronger than the actual. The sounds are mesmeric; listen at your own risk. Maybe the release should come with a stronger warning label.
