"Four directions out there, four contrasting interpretations of a prepared text and open score based on David Henri Thoreau's transcendental essay about walking (1851).

readwalking, solitary thinging, in partial light *, step by step, a word at a time in silence aloud, together alone, discreetly randomly, in hope in wonder, here and there."-Edition Wandelwieser

Artist Biographies

"Emmanuelle Waeckerlé is a London based artist and academic whose interdisciplinary practice explores the materiality of language and connecting issues of place and identity. Through a number of interrelated projects stretching back over twenty years, Emmanuelle uses performative strategies (live and mediated), text (very few words) and on the page work to construct ephemeral occasions, scores and other creative tools suitable for the marking and reading of (being in) space. Recurring themes are - the relationship between walking writing and reading - the limitations and creative potential of translation - poetics of survival and resistance

Emmanuelle is a Reader in Photography and relational practices at University for the Creative Art in Farnham, and director of bookRoom research cluster and bookRoom press. Between 2007 and 2014 she was part of the small team running the centre des livres d'artistes in St Yrieix la Perche in France.

Emmanuelle studied Photography with Mick Williamson at Sir John Cass (now Metropolitan University). She then completed an MA in Fine Art at the Slade school of Art in 1996 under Stuart Brisley. After a few years of part time lecturing on the Photography degree and the MA in Fine Art at Kent Institute of Art and design she was appointed senior lecturer in Visual communication at University for the Creative Arts in Farnham in the Photography department. She became a Reader in 2012."

"Marianne Schuppe is a singer, writer and composer working across music and language. She continually develops her work through improvisation, performance and writing. Her prime interest lies in the voice's ability to move between pure sound and words as well as in multilinguism.

She studied visual arts and music in Hildesheim/Germany and extendeded her vocal studies in South India (Kalakshetra Academy), Switzerland (Jolanda Rodio) and Italy (Michiko Hirayama).

She often works solo, but also collaborated with composers Caroline Wilkins, Roland Dahinden, Michael Maierhof, Hans-Jürg Meier, Antoine Beuger and with ensembles such as Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Phönix Basel and Basel Sinfonietta.

As an improvisor she collaborated in various formations and plays presently with Alfred Zimmerlin in duo.

In the context of visual arts and performance, partners were Dorothea Schürch, Andrea Wolfensberger, Renée Levi, Dias&Riedweg among others. She took part in radioplays, -features and -discussions and published several essays about here observations of voice and singing.

As a soloist she recorded the vocal-cycles of Giacinto Scelsi (New Albion 2006), Three Voices by Morton Feldman (col legno 2007) and her own works (edition wandelweiser). Further recordings with ensembles were released with variuos labels.

She teaches singing and improvisation at various institutions, worked as a voice- teacher in Germany, Switzerland and Japan and is a guest-lecturer at FHNW University of Music in Basel. This practical experience has led to the development of individual projects with people and voices and resulted in several commissioned works.

She lives in Basel, where she curates a concert series as president of the IGNM Basel."

"Composer and cellist. Born 1968, resident in Solothurn (CH). Trained at the Lucerne Conservatory and at Boston University School of Music.

Most of his scores are to be rendered by performers; some scores serve as a template in field recording and sound art. In his compositions he operates with relatively determined open systems. Scores were realized at the Kunstraum Düsseldorf (2007), at Kid Ailack Concert Hall, Tokio (2007/09) and at the Diapason Gallery, New York (2010) among other locations. As interpreter he has premiered solo-pieces by Jürg Frey, Radu Malfatti, Tim Parkinson, James Saunders, Taku Sugimoto, Taku Unami and Manfred Werder and he has performed with the ensemble incidental music in Berlin, Brussels, London and Zurich."
