"[...] In particular, the new string-focused quintet album Pentahedron, dating from CreativeFest XIII this past November, offers yet another collective interaction around a member of Red Trio: Bassist Hernâni Faustino had appeared elsewhere with Rodrigues, e.g. in Octopus on Mimus (as discussed here in January 2019), but he's much more a pole of the interaction on Pentahedron, to the point that I found myself spontaneously asking on first audition, "Wait, is that a bass solo?" In that sense, the music on Pentahedron is then rather more traditionally jazzy than e.g. that with the Lisbon String Trio (perhaps recalling some of the idioms from the first phase of Rodrigues' III Phases series, as coincidentally also noted here in January 2019) - such an impression being bolstered by the other musical pole on Pentahedron, Carlos Zingaro on violin. (Zingaro had of course already appeared with Rodrigues & LST on Theia, first discussed here in July 2018.... But the actual ensemble here, albeit around rather different formal investigations, is much more similar to the quintet with percussion around João Camões on Chant....)

There's thus very much a sense of (e.g. FMP) tradition, as well as an investigation of momentum - including somewhat uncharacteristically around groove - more generally, via almost a world-weary working-through, (at times) pace some traffic figures & extended string timbres, especially from the middle of the texture. (There's also a sense of completion that arrives several minutes prior to the real close to the proceedings, resulting in a more timbrally transformative approach being engaged, nonetheless soon coming to reconfigure around momentum again, before fading to close.... One might thus speak of two tracks, although the total album length remains under half an hour....) And those middle textures are, in part, where Rodrigues has been so transformative in general, here with Guilherme Rodrigues (cello) as well, in addition to José Oliveira on percussion - the latter generally taking a more traditionally rhythmic "accent" approach, after being absent from the Creative Sources catalog for quite some time, especially relative to his early involvement (during which Oliveira appeared on the first three albums released by the label - & on the first five to include Ernesto Rodrigues himself).

The result is that Pentahedron is relatively aggressive for much of its length, somewhat in keeping with e.g. the "concerto" style on Sediments with Gabriel Ferrandini on drums (as discussed here in December 2019), and certainly with the quasi-extroverted presentation on Rhetorica with Rodrigo Pinheiro on piano (as already discussed here in August 2019), such that it forms something of a set (i.e. around Red Trio) with those two (most recent, as it happens) LST issues. (That the participation of Faustino on bass would conflict with Alvaro Rosso of LST thus apparently figures this particular combination, although that's more about the way the bass specifically functions on Pentahedron: Generally adding another bassist to LST seems feasible to me, although it hasn't occurred....) Anyway, it doesn't seem that Pentahedron is especially innovative, at least compared to some of Rodrigues' other work, but it does make for an enjoyable, and presumably relatively approachable, release featuring more improvised string music in a virtuoso concert setting. "Carlos Zíngaro (or Carlos "Zíngaro" Alves, born 1948 in Lisbon, Portugal) is a Portuguese violinist and electronic musician active in free improvisation.

He studied classical music in Lisbon and began working with a number of leading improvisers in the mid-1970s, becoming one of the European top improvisers presently. He has worked with such musicians as Richard Teitelbaum, Joëlle Léandre, Peter Kowald, Barre Phillips, Daunik Lazro, Derek Bailey, Jon Rose, Ken Vandermark, Ken Filiano, Rodrigo Amado, Ned Rothenberg, Rüdiger Carl, Dominique Regef, Evan Parker, Annick Nozati, Theo Jörgensmann and Paul Lovens.

Zíngaro has performed at new and improvised music festivals in Europe, Asia, and North America, produced several film scores, and collaborated with dance companies.

He is also a prolific illustrator and comics author."

"He has been playing the violin for 30 years and in that time has played all genres of music ranging from contemporary music to free jazz and improvised music, live and in the studio.

His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music.

The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements.

Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning.

Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups.

"Was born 1988 in Lisboa, Portugal and started playing cello and trumpet at Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa at the age of 7. In 1999 joined Conservatório Nacional de Música de Lisboa to study classical and music theory and in the current year recorded his first album - Multiples - with Ernesto Rodrigues and José Oliveira out on Creative Sources Recordings.

Apart from work in music ensembles ranging for contemporary classical to free improvisation, also works with live music poetry, theatre and film-music. After lengthy residency in Lisboa, (1988-2016) moved to Berlin and has been active as composer and improviser in the scene.

"After establishing his name during the Eighties as an electric bass guitarist in alternative rock bands, like the now legendary K4 Quadrado Azul, Hernani Faustino turned to avant-jazz and free improvised music and chose the double bass as his self-taught instrument. Two decades later of multiple interactions with Portuguese and international musicians, he's now considered one of the most intense and solid bassists in the Portuguese scene. The association he maintains with drummer Gabriel Ferrandini (RED trio, Nobuyasu Furuya Trio & Quintet, Rodrigo Amado Wire Quartet) has been pointed as a dynamic and powerful rhythm section. His visceral playing is well showed by the contortions of his face during a performance: he goes to the limits of pleasure and pain.

Music is his life: besides being a musician, he was one of the members of the label Clean Feed, considered one of the five more important on the planet in what regards jazz, and the Trem Azul Jazz Store, located in Lisbon. He also composed for theatre, produced radio programs, and wrote about music in a couple of magazines. A good part of his activity in photography is also music oriented: Faustino is one of the most accomplished stage photographers around. This says all about his passion and commitment.

"Polivalent artist with conections to the Fluxus movement, José Oliveira is well known, besides music by his "mail art" creations, performance and poetry.

As an improvisor, his aproach to percussion is similar to Paul Lovens, Roger Turner, Lê Quan Ninh and Paul Lytton. He prefers a non conventional "set", where he uses instruments and objects as raw materials to create an improvised language rich in terms of timbre and textures. To this he adds sometimes inside piano manipulations and prepared guitar, in the same way as John Cage: the objects are placed on the strings or in between them in real-time performance, and not according to a previous plan.

He belonged to Sei Miguel collective between 1989 and 1996, played with Carlos Bechegas and Pedro Roxo and has a regular activity with Ernesto Rodrigues."
